“The draft authorization for the use of military force the administration circulated Saturday is strikingly broad. And if we know anything from the history of past AUMFs, it’s that presidents will push the authority they’re given as far as language will allow—and possibly further. In his Rose Garden press conference Saturday, Obama said ‘we would not put boots on the ground.’ The action he’s contemplating would be ‘limited in duration and scope.’ Just a ‘shot across the bow”—a light dusting of cruise missiles. The draft AUMF says no such thing.”

CIA Analyst Michael Scheuer Exposes Syrian War Lobbyists
“Members of al Qaeda are known to be among the rebels being supported by the Obama administration. Like a Mexican standoff, the tragic conflict could go in any direction. Michael Scheuer is a historian and former CIA analyst. For three years, he headed the Osama bin Laden tracking Unit at the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center. He is author of the book Imperial Hubris. In 2007, bin Laden said Scheuer’s book revealed the reasons behind U.S. losses in the War on Terrorism.”
Americans don’t want U.S. military strike against Syria, poll finds

“Two new polls out Tuesday have found strong opposition to US military intervention in Syria among a war-weary American public despite increasing support in Washington for punitive strikes. A survey carried out by the Pew Research Center over the weekend found that 48 percent of Americans oppose ‘conducting military airstrikes’ against Syria over its alleged use of chemical weapons compared to 29 percent who support such action. A Washington Post-ABC news poll found a similar margin, with nearly six in 10 Americans opposed to missile strikes against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. The polls found opposition across the political spectrum.”
Top U.S. Republicans back Syria strike as refugee crisis mounts
“John Boehner, the Republican speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor both pledged their support for military action after the meeting. The chairman of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee said on Tuesday he was confident after talking with Obama that the United States would step up its support for ‘vetted’ elements of the Syrian opposition. Senator Carl Levin said he urged the president, a fellow Democrat, to arm the Syrian rebels a day after two influential Republican senators, John McCain and Lindsey Graham, sought similar assurances from Obama.”

Point-By-Point Rebuttal of U.S. Case for War In Syria
“The White House released a 4-page document setting forth its case for use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government. But as shown below, the case is extremely weak (government’s claim in quotes, followed by rebuttal evidence).”

Anthony Gregory: The Twisted Premises Implicit in the Drive for War
“The utter calamity that has unfolded in Iraq should guide even those who philosophically embrace intervention toward a realistic advocacy of U.S. restraint. Even if humanitarian war were not a total oxymoron, the United States in particular deserves a prolonged time-out. It has in the last fifty years left behind millions of corpses piled under a thousand broken promises, and so a 50-year moratorium on further American wars would seem like a reasonable goal, rather than starting yet another war even as the chaotic and inhumane consequences of interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya continue to unfold.”

Are American taxpayers financially responsible to defend Syrians?

“President Obama has broken new ground. He has argued that not only does the U.S. government have the authority to tax Americans to defend every human being on the planet, but that the president can order military intervention for that reason on his authority alone. Unfortunately, this has led many to believe that his decision to wait until Congress debates the intervention is some sort of victory for constitutional government. It’s not. Nowhere in the Constitution is it stated or implied that American taxpayers are financially responsible for the common defense of the whole world. Military operations are not funded by donations. Taxpayers are compelled to pay taxes by force.”
A Century of Lies: The Rationales for Engaging in Foreign Wars

“If President Barack Obama and his administration are not lying in the lead-up to a probable bombing campaign of Syria it will be a rare exception among US Presidents, particularly since their public duplicity concerning war dates to at least the early twentieth century. Indeed, being forthrightly dishonest to the American people concerning the rationales for engaging in foreign wars has become a century-old White House tradition. The historical record of past presidents’ prewar and wartime hucksterism is unambiguous, greatly contributing to the immense bloodshed and destruction that continues under the country’s reckless international leadership to this day.”
Syria asks United Nations to ‘prevent Western aggression’

“Syria’s UN representative Bashar al-Jaafari said the government ‘calls on the UN secretary general to assume his responsibilities… and to make efforts to prevent any aggression against Syria,’ the state news agency SANA reported. The letter also urged the United Nations to help seek a ‘peaceful political solution to the crisis’ in Syria, where more than 110,000 people have been killed in violence since an uprising against the regime began in March 2011. The report came as Russia adopted an increasingly antagonistic posture against the use of force in Syria, further beefing up its naval presence in the region with the dispatch of an intelligence ship to the Mediterranean.”
