Textbook Publisher Pearson Takes Down 1.5 Million Teacher And Student Blogs With A Single DMCA Notice

“From shuttering a legitimate ebook lending site to removing negative reviews to destroying a user’s Flickr account to knocking a copyright attorney’s site offline, the DMCA notice continues to be the go-to weapon for copyright defenders. Collateral damage is simply shrugged at and the notices continue to fly at an ever-increasing pace.   And now because Pearson somehow feels that a 38-year-old questionnaire is worth $120,  ServerBeach felt compelled to take down 1.5 million blogs over a single DMCA notice.”

Google threatens to drop links to French media if pay-per-link law passes

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Google-via-AFP1.jpg

“Internet giant Google has warned it would exclude French media sites from its search results if France adopts a law forcing search engines to pay for content, in the latest confrontation with European governments.  A letter sent by Google to several French ministerial offices this month said it ‘cannot accept’ such a move and the company ‘as a consequence would be required to no longer reference French sites,’ according to a copy obtained by AFP.  France’s new Socialist government, which is open to helping struggling media companies, warned Google that it should not threaten democratic governments.”

Your right to resell your own stuff is in peril

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/MW-AV010_flea_m_20121003210607_MD1.jpg

“Though Apple Inc. has the copyright on the iPhone and Mark Owen has it on the book ‘No Easy Day,’ you can still sell your copies to whomever you please whenever you want without retribution.  That’s being challenged now for products that are made abroad, and if the Supreme Court upholds an appellate court ruling, it would mean that the copyright holders of anything you own that has been made in China, Japan or Europe, for example, would have to give you permission to sell it.”

Google Censorship: A Manufactured Affair?

“We are informed by the CBC that Google is coming under pressure to remove the inflammatory anti-Muslim video from its YouTube subsidiary. But there are plenty of questions about Google, too, and its links to Western Intel.   Literally thousands of cites show clearly a pattern of deep involvement between the world’s most successful search engine and Western Intel.  One could make a case that the Internet’s largest ventures are successful BECAUSE of Intel backing.  And it is perfectly reasonable, therefore, that such efforts should be used in larger operations to curtail ‘Net freedoms.”

New Zealand PM apologizes to Kim Dotcom for ‘unacceptable’ bungle that led to Megaupload founder’s arrest

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/kimdotcommegaupload-afp11.jpg

“The GCSB, which is forbidden from spying on New Zealanders or permanent residents, had been asked by the police last year to monitor Dotcom who is wanted in the United States on Internet piracy charges.  When they questioned the police if they could legally monitor Dotcom, the report said they were assured they could even though the German national held a New Zealand residence visa at the time. Dotcom is fighting extradition to the United States where the US Justice Department and FBI claim Megaupload and related sites netted more than $175 million in criminal proceeds.”

Heat-seeking US election rhetoric finds Swiss “piracy”

“Anything goes in the US presidential elections, when it comes to lambasting and finding easy targets, but one of the oddest moves appeared Thursday, with the ‘Congressional International Anti-Piracy Caucus’ adding Italy and Switzerland to its black list. They join Russia, China and Ukraine on the list.  Switzerland, according to the group of 46 members of Congress, acts as a ‘magnet’ for piracy.  A key issue for the group appears to be strict Swiss data protection laws.”

Apple Copied 68-Year-Old Swiss Clock Design, Rail Operator Says

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/600px-BahnhofsuhrZuerich_RZ1.jpg

“Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s new iPhone operating system infringes a trademarked design for clocks in Swiss rail stations, according to state-owned railway operator SBB.  The iOS 6 software, introduced this month by Apple, includes a clock icon with black and red hands that uses an SBB design created in 1944, Reto Kormann, a spokesman for the Swiss rail operator, said by telephone today.  SBB, which has allowed companies such as watchmaker Mondaine Watch Ltd. to use the design under a license, said that it’s in discussions with Cupertino, California-based Apple about a license or a settlement.”

Copyright Becomes a Parody of Itself: Art History Textbook Contains No Actual Art

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/textbook-example1-e1348087155509-460x307.png

“The screengrabs are pretty hilarious, or depressing, depending on your point of view.  This is even more absurd and outrageous—I think—than the Authors Guild lawsuit to to stop universities from providing access to orphaned works, in the name of ‘copyright’ belonging to some unknown owners.”
