Kanye West Sues: STOP USING MY FACE … On Virtual Currency

“In an effort to shut down the rise of the Coinye currency, Kanye has requested an injunction against several companies he believes are responsible for its release.  But Kanye’s facing a huge problem — ’cause with one exception, the people behind the companies are hiding their identities through various online privacy services … and Kanye can’t crack ’em.  However, Kanye has added Amazon.com to the list of defendants because he believes Amazon  provides web hosting services to the websites behind Coinye.  Besides the injunction, Kanye is suing for a piece of the Coinye profits.  No word if he wants a paper check … or if he’ll settle for some Coinye.”

Chuck Norris shuts down wannabe Bitcoin with just his fingers

“As it turns out, when Chuck Norris tells you to cease and desist, you do.  Norris Coin, the latest Bitcoin alternative (altcoin) was set to hit the Internet at 10pm Eastern Time on January 14. But it appears that Norris Coin is no more.   ‘Thank you for bringing to our attention the ‘Norris Coin,’’ Jeff Duclos, Norris’ publicist, wrote in an e-mail to Ars. ‘This is a completely unauthorized use of Mr. Norris’ name and likeness. There is no affiliation. His legal representatives have now intervened and this operation has been shut down. The operators received a Notice of Infringement from Mr. Norris’ attorney. Some communication followed.'”

Alcatel-Lucent files Patent for Vault to Wallet Transfer System

“Alcatel-Lucent filed for Patent Application WO2013127713 A1 ‘Decentralized Electronic Transfer System’ with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).  The essence of the patent is a system whereby a decentralized currency such as Bitcoin is stored in a secure environment known as a Vault (i.e. secured repository) and a smaller unsecured portion of funds are stored in an unsecured Wallet (i.e. unsecure repository).  An unsecured wallet would be on a mobile phone for example.  Funds are doled out from the secure vault to the less secure wallet to provide the wallet holder with less cumbersome and frictionless experience when spending bitcoin in day to day transactions.”

IP address does not prove online piracy, says landmark US ruling

“A US federal judge wrote that a suspected internet pirate should not be prosecuted solely because his computer’s IP address was identified by a film studio. Copyright holders seeking to take offenders to court often put fake movie files online, record the hundreds or thousands of IP addresses that download it, and then provide that information to the courts in an attempt to identify and sue hapless users on the other side of the screen.  Washington District Judge Robert Lasnik said this week that the rationale begins with the assumption of guilt. Lasnik also said that there was no proof that the person who could wind up facing a lawsuit was in fact the person who chose to download ‘Elf Man’.”

‘Candy Crush’ Developer Trademarks the Word Candy

“The makers behind the popular mobile game Candy Crush Saga have received a sweet treat from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  Almost a year after King.com Limited initially filed a trademark claim for the word ‘candy,’ the filing was approved by the USPTO Wednesday.   Now, app developers with games on the market that include the word in the title are reportedly receiving emails from Apple asking them to remove their apps from the App Store.  The trademark includes games and software, educational services, and, oddly enough, clothing.”

Founder of Ultra-Arcade Cabinet Company Gets Two-Year Prison Term

“The founder of the Ultracade, a MAME-type arcade cabinet that once was a status item among video game connoisseurs, will spend the next two years in a federal prison for secretly copying and selling video games and code whose rights he had sold to another company.  Foley, 48, founded Ultracade in 2002 but then sold his business to a company called Global VR in 2006. A federal indictment stretching back to the summer of 2009 accused Foley of copying the ‘game packs’ that Ultracade cabinets used—essentially a bundle of classic arcade games—and then selling the counterfeit packs via eBay, still marketed under the Ultracade name.”

Google Glass-wearing moviegoer interrogated by Homeland Security

“An hour into watching Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit wearing his prescription version of Glass, he said, he’d been abruptly pulled from the theater and interrogated at length by ‘feds,’ who accused him of attempting to pirate the movie by recording it.  He also says theater employees had asked about his glasses in the past and never complained about him wearing them or asked him to take them off. Instead, he describes agents roughly yanking the glasses off his face during the film and five to ten cops and security guards waiting outside the theater.  As the Glass user base expands, we may well see patrons being asked to prove that they’ve turned off their glasses as well as their cellphones.”

Patent stunner: Nation’s most notorious “troll” sues federal gov’t

“MPHJ Technology Investments quickly became one of the best-known ‘patent trolls’ of all time by sending out thousands of letters to small businesses—16,465 of them, we now know—saying that if the business did not pay a licensing fee of $1,000 or more per worker, it would be sued for patent infringement. MPHJ claimed to have patents that cover any networked ‘scan-to-email’ function.  The FTC’s interest in MPHJ was revealed in an audacious ‘preemptive strike’ lawsuit that MPHJ actually filed against the FTC on Monday. The suit, which names the four sitting FTC commissioners personally, says that the agency has overstepped its bounds and trampled on MPHJ’s constitutional rights.”

Simple: because the people demanded Coinyes despite Kanye West being a poor sport about it. Kanye West Unleashes Lawyers on ‘Coinye’ Altcoin

“Rapper-turned-entrepreneur Kanye West has taken legal action against the creators of Coinye West, a tongue-in-cheek digital currency that was supposed to launch this week. According to the Wall Street Journal, the document was filed on 6th January and it is going after the coders because the design of the coin features a cartoon of West.  The new design still features a cartoon of Kanye West, but it is a lot less flattering.  It depicts Kanye as a fish (South Park fans should get the joke). Ironically, Kanye was parodied in South Park for not getting a simple joke conceived by one of the show’s protagonists.”
