Pocket Enormous Tax Savings in Puerto Rico

“Never before have such incredible tax incentives been available to Americans so easily.  You see, to spur job growth and economic activity in general, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico introduced these enormous tax incentives for incoming residents and service businesses.  Specifically, for Puerto Rican residents and businesses that qualify—mostly expatriates from the US mainland or their enterprises—the recently enacted Act 22 and Act 20 provide for a zero tax rate on capital gains and certain interest and dividends earned by individuals.  And, if you a run a business that exports services like I’m doing here, they also provide for low single-digit tax rates on your profits.”

Why I REALLY Moved to Puerto Rico, and You Should Too

“This is the new land of opportunity. There is a critical combination here of an underutilized but well-educated workforce, a culture that is obviously changing for the better, and a tax regime that is committed to letting entrepreneurs reinvest more of our money back into our businesses.  Add those three together, and there would be something good going on down here. But there’s another factor: The Internet. With the ability to do many jobs from the convenience of anywhere, thanks to Skype, GoToMeeting, Gmail, Dropbox, and thousands of other tools that finally make the home office a reality, the opportunity is enormous.”

Americans Can Still Benefit from Tax Havens

“There is a silver lining, however, and that is the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE).  What is it and how does it work?  If you qualify for the FEIE you can exclude a not-insignificant amount of foreign earnings from your US taxable income. This amount is adjusted annually for inflation and is set at US$97,600 for 2013.  So, assuming that you qualify for the FEIE, you can exclude up to US$97,600 of your foreign earned income (for 2013) from your US taxable income. Keep in mind that you still have a tax liability to the country in which you reside and earned the foreign income.  That is unless you earn your income in one of these 18 countries that have no personal income tax.”

The Top 6 Reasons Why Everyone Needs a Second Passport

“Doug Casey has said over and over that spreading your political risk beyond one jurisdiction is the single most important thing he can recommend today.  Obtaining a second passport and citizenship in another country is a critical part in heeding Doug’s advice.  This is because it’s a fundamental step towards minimizing the political risk of being subjected to the whims of any single government.  The political diversification benefits that come with obtaining a second passport are universal and prudent for anyone in the world to obtain… especially those under a desperate (fiscally or otherwise) government.  Here are the top six reasons why everyone needs a second passport.”

The Benefits of Bitcoin in International Travel

“Bitcoin solves many problems that international travellers currently deal with. It eliminates the hassle and fees associated with converting to local currencies and carrying cash, and it securely protects the payment credentials of consumers to avoid fraud risk and the potential to lose bank account access in a foreign country.  While it is tough to travel with only bitcoin on international trips at the moment, the rapid merchant adoption of bitcoin is changing this.  Travel-focused merchants such as CheapAir.comBTCTrip and Pointshound are just a few merchants generating significant bitcoin sales from international travellers.”

What Every American Expat Should Know About… US Expat Taxes

“Even after you move, some states will still require you to pay tax on your worldwide income! Some of the worst states for US expat taxes are California, South Carolina, Virginia, or New Mexico-If you were a resident of one of these states before your move, you are going to have to work very hard to prove your non-resident status in order to avoid tax there as well.  Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming have no state income tax. If planned in advance, you can work to change your residency to one of these more favorable states. It will be a bit of a chore now, but when your tax bill is thousands less later on, you will be glad you put in the effort!”

Canadian immigrant investor program scrapped, replacement planned

“The federal government had announced in the February budget it was axing its immigrant investor and entrepreneur programs, wiping from a backlogged waiting list tens of thousands of people who had been willing to lend $800,000 interest-free in return for permanent residence.  But Alexander told the Post this week a new pilot program to attract wealthy immigrants was on its way.  Under the pilot, wealthy immigrants would lend for more than five years at least double the cash they were made to pay under the old program, according to the Post article. The money would be privately managed under the immigration investor venture capital pilot program.”

Isle of Man Welcomes Bitcoin Exchanges: ‘No License Required’

“The Isle of Man seems to be setting itself up as a hub for bitcoin-related businesses. The self-governing British Crown dependency is already appealing to conventional businesses and wealthy individuals, and the latest indications are that this fiscally liberal environment will be extended to cryptocurrency-related activities as well.  The Isle of Man is highly attractive to e-business not least because of its low tax regime, where resident individuals are taxed at 20% to a maximum of £120,000 per year, while businesses pay no corporate tax and banks only 10%.  The island also boasts massive bandwith and redundancy, with world-class DDoS protection and multiple options for secure hosting.”

Malta’s European Investment-Citizenship Program Explained

“This is now also the first such program that is officially approved by the EU Commission. The basic requirements are a non-refundable contribution to the National Development and Social Fund, an investment in property, and the purchase of securities (currently just government bonds).  Additionally, you need to acquire a residence card first, which you need to hold for one year before citizenship is granted. This residence card, however, gives you visa-free entry into the Schengen area immediately, and it is issued very efficiently. This is the fastest residence card you can get all over Europe.  The entire processing time from A to Z is one year, but it includes this residence period.”
