$1 Million Bail For Bitcoin Execs Charged With Money Laundering

“They were required to post nearly $1 million in property as collateral.  Assistant U.S. Attorney Serrin Turner said Shrem ‘has held himself out as a ‘Bitcoin millionaire” who was ready to flee rather than face charges that could put him in prison for nine to 11 years.  Turner said the nature of the Bitcoin industry meant that Shrem had a ‘storage locker in the clouds’ with money to facilitate flight. He added that Shrem had traveled internationally 16 times since 2007, with most of the trips in the past two years to places including the Netherlands, Turkey, Panama, Aruba and Mexico.”

Why This Technology Is The Future Of Asset Internationalization

“One of bitcoin’s biggest benefits as an option for internationalizing one’s assets is that it exists only as an abstract computer-driven file. This makes the coin exceedingly durable and easy to transport (or recover) anywhere in the world.  In other words, you don’t have to bury a few bitcoins in the backyard, and then dig them up on the offchance you need them, like with gold and silver. Bitcoins are much less bulky than precious metals, a major convenience.  Plus, nobody wants to board plane-after-plane to get a considerable amount of gold out of the US. That bitcoin is not tangible bestows upon it special properties. Special properties that neither gold nor silver demonstrate.”

How I Renounced My US Citizenship and Why, Part I

“There are actually two somewhat distinct procedures by which you can give up US citizenship: relinquishment or renunciation. The State Department forms and consular staff procedures are similar, but not identical, for both ways.  Professional and informal advisors have differing opinions on which is better—and even whether there’s any substantive difference at all—apart from the $450 fee now required for a Renunciation filing (no fee at all is currently required for filing a Relinquishment—if one is in a position to choose that route).  There are no differences in IRS/tax consequences, and it’s said that the State Department makes no distinction.”

The Daily Bell – Investment Trends 2014

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Welcome to 2014. Here are some dominant social themes I’ve selected to watch in 2014. In each case, I’ve selected a recent mainstream article to illustrate the trend in question: Gold to begin with, given the slump this metal has been in of late… We don’t have a time or a price point for gold going forward, but we do believe there are many signs of the yellow metal’s manipulation and sooner or later it will be time to buy once again. Biotech is sure to continue benefiting from what we have called the ‘Wall Street Party,’ a series of presumably arranged monetary and regulatory events that are boosting equity markets higher around the world and especially in the US – albeit not without volatility.”

Why Living in Singapore May (or May Not) Be Right for You

“Several people who have lived in Singapore longer than I insist that the cultural undercurrent is such that it is at a cusp of a revolution in creativity, with top international companies increasingly moving their R&D work and with world’s best universities setting up their operations there. Top leadership positions are increasingly taken up by locals.   Filing of personal income tax will likely take you a minute or two—only earnings are taxed. Your capital gains, dividends, and bank interest are yours to keep unmolested. Singapore doesn’t tax any overseas earnings either. Virtually everything dealing with the government is done on the Internet in an extremely efficient and friendly way.”

The One Place You Must Go This Year

“Uruguay is a strongly middle-class country, unlike much of Central and South America. Democracy and the rule of law are well entrenched; government is stable and transparent. It’s the safest country south of the border, and the wealth gap is narrow, meaning there’s no social unrest or crime fueled by angry have-nots. You don’t find beggars roaming the streets, or bare-foot and impoverished children panhandling. The literacy rate matches that in the U.S. There’s no need to pay bribes. And there’s no mañana attitude.  The country is clean and tidy. The beaches are beautiful, many wild and often empty. The national highways are first world and well maintained.”

Why I’m Leaving

“My grandparents emigrated from Portugal to Mozambique during the 1940s and 50s in search of a better life. The massive and undeveloped colony seemed like the land of milk and honey for those willing to get their hands dirty. A few decades later my parents-to-be immigrated to South Africa as Mozambique headed towards what would become a 10-year war for independence. Then when I was just 4 years old they decided that a fascist state fully enveloped with the evils of apartheid was no place to raise a child. My mother was fortunate enough to get a work visa into the United States and that’s where we’ve been ever since.  Now the time has come for me to follow in my family’s footsteps.”

Another Passport Program to Avoid

“‘Citizenship shouldn’t be bought and sold like a pair of shoes,’ a man once told me. ‘I think it’s scandalous that some countries are selling their citizens’ birthright.’ I disagree. We live in a world where governments have assigned themselves the authority to prevent people from traveling if they don’t have the right papers. One hundred years ago, you didn’t need a passport to travel the world. Today, hundreds of millions of people can’t leave their own country. Billions more have very limited travel options. Are you surprised that a market has developed for the documents needed to travel more freely? I’m not, and I’m proud to be part of a business that, in the end, gives people greater personal freedom.”

Cook Islands, a Paradise of Untouchable Assets

“These flyspeck islands in the middle of the Pacific would be nothing more than lovely coral atolls, nice for fish and pearls, except for one thing: The Cooks are a global pioneer in offshore asset-protection trusts, with laws devised to protect foreigners’ assets from legal claims in their home countries.  The Cayman Islands, Switzerland and the British Virgin Islands capture headlines for laws and tax rates that allow multinational corporations and the rich to shelter income from the American government. The Cook Islands offer a different form of secrecy. The long arm of United States law does not reach there. The Cooks generally disregard foreign court orders.”
