Scotland citizenship, passport plans outlined

Anyone who has lived in Scotland for 10 years at some stage of their life will be allowed to apply to become a Scottish citizen after independence, according to the white paper.  It will also be available to anyone with a Scottish grandparent or parent, through a system of citizenship by descent.  Those who will automatically be considered Scottish citizens are British citizens ‘habitually resident’ in Scotland – including those who have a dual citizenship with another country.  Scottish-born citizens currently living outside the country will also be considered citizens.  A Scottish passport will be available to anyone who acquires Scottish citizenship.”

China’s rich fleeing the country—with their fortunes

“It’s one of the largest and most rapid wealth migrations of our time: hundreds of billions of dollars, and waves of millionaires flowing out of China to overseas destinations.  According to WealthInsight, the Chinese wealthy now have about $658 billion stashed in offshore assets. And it’s not just the money that’s exiting the country. The wealthy are increasingly following their money overseas.  Wealthy Chinese buyers purchased more than $8 billion worth of residential real estate in the U.S. in the 12 months ended in March, according to the National Association of Realtors.  China’s wealthy also are pouring money into collectibles and art.  It’s also going to wine and diamonds.”

Jeff Berwick on Practical Solutions to a Collapsing World Order

“This is the most dangerous time in human history for capital and it is up to you to guide your own ship to survive… and prosper. And if you don’t have capital, make it. Outside of the overtaxed and overregulated West there is nothing but opportunity. Get outside of thinking within your national borders like a serf and do what your forefathers did – take a chance and go somewhere else where the opportunities currently lie. I write regularly at The Dollar Vigilante, a network of liberty-loving expats around the world who have gone to a new region and made a life for themselves. It has never been easier, thanks to air travel, the Internet, ATM machines, mobile phones and countless other technologies.”

Pay in Bitcoin for a Plot in Chilean Libertarian Paradise

“The land is home to abundant supply of fresh clean water, sourced from over fifty wells, two underground aquifers, canals, two rivers, a manmade lake and a number of natural springs.  Ken Johnson, managing partner of the Galt’s Gulch Chile project, said: ‘We chose Chile for its economic freedoms, as well as its freedom in general.’ There is a 250-acre farm on the recently purchased land, which is being subdivided into five 25-acre lemon orchards and a 125-acre Galt’s Gulch Organic Farm. The community will use the farm to grow pesticide-free and non-GMO vegetables, fruits, nuts and spices, which will be sold worldwide under the brand Galt’s Gulch Organics.”

No Light. No Tunnel. Just More Dark.

“Now is the time to figure out what you want and what you need in a new country. Where would you feel most comfortable? Go visit those places, spend time mingling in daily life, not just hanging out at hotels, tourist restaurants and museums. Go shopping in the supermarkets and look for the kinds of products you routinely buy at home. Grab snacks at local bakeries or pubs, and eat at the restaurants where locals gather. Ride public transit or rent a car and gauge your tolerance for local traffic. Ask a local real-estate agent to show you properties in a price range you could realistically afford to buy or rent. Open a bank account.”

Malta to ID buyers of its citizenship after outcry

“Malta’s government has rolled back one element of its controversial law to sell its citizenship for 650,000 euros ($865,000), saying it will publish the names of people buying their way into European Union passports.  The government had argued that keeping the names secret would have brought in more money — the key goal of the initiative. But the government withdraw the secrecy clause ‘after listening to the people,’ according to a statement late Sunday.  The opposition Nationalist Party has vowed to repeal the law and revoke all the citizenships sold if the party returns to power.”

Are You Already in Jail?

“In recent years, stories coming from those who cross the Canadian/US border have become increasingly like those of the caricatures seen in the films of fifty years ago, depicting totalitarian East European countries that were under the control of the USSR.  (‘Your papers, pleece! Step ziss vay! Ve heff som qvestions!’) Many people have come to fear the Canadian/US border crossing, worrying that their answers to questions by Immigration officers (some of which have no bearing on immigration) will somehow provide officers with an excuse to detain or arrest them. Some have ceased travel across the Canadian/US border altogether.”

Plotting an Escape From America

“What do China, Russia and the Cayman Islands have in common?  All three are among the top 10 countries for working-age expatriates looking for wealth and happiness, according to the 2013 HSBC Expat Explorer Survey. Given the many people who are now thinking of pulling up stakes and hightailing it out of the U.S., it’s a good time to consider some of its findings.  On one hand, it’s unsurprising that the respondents found Switzerland to be the world’s most economically-rewarding country for expats.  But many would be surprised to find that the second most desirable country, from an economic standpoint, is Communist-ruled China.”

Bitcoin Couple Travels the World Using Virtual Cash

“They began their trek in October by driving east from Provo in Ms. Bingham-Craig’s 2004 Volkswagen Jetta. After arriving in New York on Oct. 17, they flew to Stockholm, Berlin and Singapore before eventually returning to Provo. In the end, they lasted 101 days, from July 23 to Nov. 1.  The Craigs weren’t part of the bitcoin underground when they began the project. Mr. Craig said he first heard of the currency in 2011 and then came up with the plan to live and travel solely on bitcoin.  ‘I’m really excited about bitcoin and its future,’ Mr. Craig said. ‘It’s a reimagining of money.'”
