The Top 6 Reasons Why Everyone Needs a Second Passport

“Doug Casey has said over and over that spreading your political risk beyond one jurisdiction is the single most important thing he can recommend today.  Obtaining a second passport and citizenship in another country is a critical part in heeding Doug’s advice.  This is because it’s a fundamental step towards minimizing the political risk of being subjected to the whims of any single government.  The political diversification benefits that come with obtaining a second passport are universal and prudent for anyone in the world to obtain… especially those under a desperate (fiscally or otherwise) government. Here are the top six reasons why everyone needs a second passport.”

Why Snowden’s Passport Matters

“Cancelation of the passport wasn’t just an effort to prevent the whistleblower from getting to a country that might grant political asylum. It was also a declaration that the U.S. government can nullify the right to travel just as surely as it can nullify the right to privacy.  Since 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has affirmed with clarity: ‘Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.’ The only other words of Article 14 specify an exception that clearly doesn’t apply: ‘This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.'”

Residency in Puerto Rico as an Alternative to Expatriation

“What if I were to tell you that you can gain many of the tax benefits of expatriation without giving up your US citizenship?  The goal of this planning strategy is to leave America without leaving it for citizenship purposes.  Puerto Rico (PR) passed a series of stunning tax legislation in 2012, making the US Commonwealth highly desirable as a jurisdiction from a tax standpoint.  This article will focus on an alternative strategy to a taxpayer giving up their US citizenship for tax purposes and instead becoming a Puerto Rican resident for tax purposes.”

Overseas adoptions rise — for black American children

“While the number of international adoptions is plummeting — largely over questions surrounding the origin of children put up for adoption in developing countries — there is one nation from which parents abroad can adopt a healthy infant in a relatively short time whose family history and medical background is unclouded by doubt: The United States.  While the typical tale of international adoption is U.S. families adopting a child from abroad, foreign families like the van Meurs adopt scores of U.S. children each year.  Over the past decade the number of U.S. children adopted by foreign parents has been steadily rising — and almost all of the children are of African American descent, say attorneys.”

Use This Investing Secret of the Rich and Famous …

“In just the last month, British serial entrepreneur and bleeding heart Richard Branson admitted that he has been living as a de-facto tax exile in the British Virgin Islands for the last seven years. Although he denies tax considerations as a motivation for the move to his private island, Necker, he recently sold his British residence to his kids and declared himself a non-resident.  U2 frontman Bono, net worth $600 million, recently slammed big oil companies for allegedly failing to pay taxes in poor countries where they operate. Days earlier he had defended U2’s own use of offshore companies to reduce taxes in response to the Irish government’s decision to cap artists’ tax-free income at €250,000.”

Head Away From Old San Juan and to Luquillo, Puerto Rico

“From pre-Columbian Taino-Indian petroglyphs to Spanish fortresses; gorgeous beaches to rainforest adventure parks: Puerto Rico is the kind of destination that draws thrill-seekers and history buffs alike. Better yet? La Isla Del Encanto is an unincorporated US territory, so no US passport needed if you’re a citizen!  And while most travelers flock to Old San Juan, I personally recommend you venture out of its Metro area in order to experience a more unique, adventurous trip. My favorite beach town in the vicinity? LUQUILLO! It’s only 45 minutes east of the capital, an easy ride whether you rent a car or go with a tour operator.”

T-Mobile announces unlimited global data roaming at no extra charge

“T-Mobile unveiled the latest part of its Uncarrier initiative today: the carrier is offering unlimited international data and text services at no extra charge starting October 31st.  T-Mobile’s new plans are significantly different than the industry is accustomed to — most international roaming plans are prohibitively expensive and have limited caps for data and text messaging. T-Mobile notes that 40 percent of traveling Americans turn off data services on their phones when they are abroad to avoid the exorbitant fees. The carrier says that by removing this bill shock, travelers will be more open to using their phones while overseas.”
