The Ultimate Layer of Financial Protection

“If you have a standard IRA from a large US financial institution, it would only take a phone call from the US government and poof, your dividend-paying stocks and corporate bonds could instantly be transformed into government paper.  It’s happened in Argentina and numerous other countries, and it is certainly an option on the table in the US. Heck, there are already whispers about the US government assuming some risk for US retirement accounts. That’s code for forced conversion of assets into government bonds.  Obviously, this is much harder for the government to do if your retirement assets are sufficiently internationalized.”

Internationalize to Escape Obamacare

“Americans abroad are only exempt if they are outside the US for 330 days per year or if they become residents of US territories, like Puerto Rico.  These are pretty strict requirements and are similar to those for the federal income tax for Americans living abroad. As you know, Americans are the only people on the planet who are subjected to a system of citizenship based taxation that is actually enforced.  Similar to the exemptions for Obamacare, there are certain exemptions to the federal income tax for Americans living for more than 330 days per year and for those who become residents of Puerto Rico.”

Overtaxed and over there

“‘FATCA is strangling us economically,’ says Genevieve Besser, an American who has lived in Germany for 25 years. Last year her youngest daughter, a dual citizen, had her local brokerage account closed by Deutsche Bank because her mother had signing authority over it.  Americans are even being forced out of products that are not subject to FATCA reporting: some have been forced to pay off mortgage balances with Swiss banks, for instance.  American banks and brokerages are growing frostier too. Some are closing the accounts of citizens who no longer have an American address because of FATCA.”

Governmental Travel Controls

“Coupled with actual cancellation at the airport will be the denial of travel documentation in general. This has already begun, with the US tying travel documents to taxation. Now, any citizen whose tax compliance is ‘in question’ may be denied the right to travel. As the term, ‘in question’ is loosely defined, it may suffice to restrict any citizen. In the future, passports may be suspended or confiscated for questions of inadequate tax compliance, or indeed, for questioned ‘terrorist sympathy’ as described above. Further, passport applications and renewals are likely to be denied more frequently due to these vague and undefined suspicions.”

Considerable interest seen in new Latvian dual citizenship program

“The amendments will come into force on October 1 this year.  The amendments stipulate that nationals residing abroad, citizens of Latvia who were deported or left Latvia as a result of the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany occupations, or those that were deported and up to May 4, 1990 had not returned to Latvia permanently, qualify for and will be able to apply for dual citizenship. The bill stipulates that Latvian citizenship will be retained for those citizens of Latvia who have received citizenship of another European Union member state, member states of the European Free Trade Association, NATO, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil.”

In Monaco, Between The Real Economy And A Tax Haven Black List

“The principality is proud to show that industrial companies are sprouting on its territory.  Since Monaco – a two-square-kilometers jewel on the French Riviera – suffers from lack of space to accommodate new manufacturing companies, its goal is to attract ‘smart’ companies: research and development centers, engineering offices.  But the new image of Monaco, which was for a long time considered a black sheep because of its lack of transparency, is still clouded by its very attractive financial legislation. It is a haven for its inhabitants, who don’t pay income tax or inheritance tax. That is, with the notable exception of U.S. and also French nationals.”

Tiny Malaysian Island Quietly Becomes A Favorite New Global Tax Haven

“There is oil here — lots of it — in the Brunei Gulf, the sultanate considered to be one of the world’s richest states. Labuan is also a member of the despised family of tax havens that the OECD is trying to bridle.  It all began in 2010, when the Malaysian government decided to attract capital from rich Muslim countries so that it could develop a sort of Islamic finance industry. But capital influx has given way to legal shelters and discretion. ‘We have made changes to our legislation and allow, since 2010, the creation of trusts and foundations specially designed for high-net-worth individuals,’ says Normala Mat Som, a 30-year-old lawyer.”

Why Have So Many Americans Considered Expatriation?

“According to Rasmussen Reports, fully 9% of the U.S. population has considered ‘expatriation.’  A record number of Americans ‘officially’ expatriated in the second quarter of 2013—and the real number is probably much higher. The mainstream media says that U.S. citizens give up their citizenship only to avoid paying tax.  The fact is, more than 7 million Americans now live abroad.  Many of them can no longer hold bank accounts, qualify for a mortgage, or set up a tax-deferred account for retirement or their children’s education.  They don’t leave solely because of taxes—they give up their native son and daughter status because they pretty much have to just to function outside this country.”

Three Exciting New Passport Programs… Or Are They?

“The easiest way to qualify for nationality in another country is by birth, ancestry, marriage, religion, or long-term residence. Unfortunately, most people don’t have any of these qualifications. The only way they can get a second citizenship and passport relatively fast is through an ‘economic citizenship’ program. Until this year, the only two bona-fide economic citizenship programs were from the Commonwealth of Dominica and the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis. But in the last few months, Antigua & Barbuda, Cyprus, and most recently Grenada have started to get into the game. Let’s take a closer look at each.”
