As you know, Americans are the only people on the planet who are subjected to a system of citizenship based taxation that is actually enforced.  Similar to the exemptions for Obamacare, there are certain exemptions to the federal income tax for Americans living for more than 330 days per year and for those who become residents of Puerto Rico.”

“‘FATCA is strangling us economically,’ says Genevieve Besser, an American who has lived in Germany for 25 years. Last year her youngest daughter, a dual citizen, had her local brokerage account closed by Deutsche Bank because her mother had signing authority over it.  Americans are even being forced out of products that are not subject to FATCA reporting: some have been forced to pay off mortgage balances with Swiss banks, for instance.  American banks and brokerages are growing frostier too. Some are closing the accounts of citizens who no longer have an American address because of FATCA.”

Governmental Travel Controls

In the future, passports may be suspended or confiscated for questions of inadequate tax compliance, or indeed, for questioned ‘terrorist sympathy’ as described above. Further, passport applications and renewals are likely to be denied more frequently due to these vague and undefined suspicions.”

Considerable interest seen in new Latvian dual citizenship program

“The amendments will come into force on October 1 this year.  The amendments stipulate that nationals residing abroad, citizens of Latvia who were deported or left Latvia as a result of the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany occupations, or those that were deported and up to May 4, 1990 had not returned to Latvia permanently, qualify for and will be able to apply for dual citizenship. The bill stipulates that Latvian citizenship will be retained for those citizens of Latvia who have received citizenship of another European Union member state, member states of the European Free Trade Association, NATO, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil.”

But capital influx has given way to legal shelters and discretion. ‘We have made changes to our legislation and allow, since 2010, the creation of trusts and foundations specially designed for high-net-worth individuals,’ says Normala Mat Som, a 30-year-old lawyer.”
