31 Haunting Images of Abandoned Places That Give You Goose Bumps

“They say that the only permanent thing in the world is change. History books are one way to understand the passage of time, but there are also some real-life monuments that speak of the past in their own ways. Here’s a selection of some of the most ghostly abandoned places around the world, every single one of which has its own special charm. Beneath all the dust, rust and cracks, there are stories of people who used to live, pray, or take their daily train rides there, and when you try to imagine these people and their lives, each picture gets a special aura of nostalgia. It’s as if the people in these places just picked up and left.”

A Second Passport with Dominica—My Experience

“There are many ways of acquiring a second passport. There’s the ancestry route, marrying a native, immigration plus years of residency, or, if you are in a hurry, you can simply buy one outright via the economic citizenship route.  To my knowledge there are presently only two countries where you can obtain citizenship without a residency requirement: Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Dominica.  Both are tiny Caribbean islands with few ways to attract outside investment except tourism, which is why they have such programs in the first place.  Dominica is the cheapest and quickest way to obtain legitimate dual citizenship without any residency requirements.”

To Avoid Jet Lag This Summer, Travel Like a Scientist

“Scientists are studying a wide range of strategies to help long-distance travelers avoid the dreaded feelings of jet lag. Frequent fliers often have sworn-by practices to combat jet lag, whether it’s adjusting a sleep schedule days before a trip, taking the hormone melatonin, seeking out bright light at certain times, or forcing the body to eat and sleep on local time immediately upon arrival.  What works best? The news from most researchers appears to be that the best formula is a combination of all of these tactics.”

Europe’s Workers Flock to Norway for Better-Paying Jobs

“People in Norway are paid $80,000 a year on average and work 20 percent fewer hours than the average for the 34-member Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The country lags behind only the Netherlands and Germany for shortest work days.  Yet with 84 percent of companies experiencing a shortage of skilled engineers, according to government figures, the world’s fourth-largest gas producer is struggling to find the workers it needs to boost oil production. Oil and gas account for about 20 percent of gross domestic product. The AAA-rated country also boasts the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, valued at $750 billion.”

Here’s an Escape Route from America’s Decline …

“I keep hearing one question from folks here at the Total Wealth Symposium in Las Vegas:  ‘How is it possible to live in a country where our voices aren’t heard and the ruling elite sacrifice OUR bottom line for their own benefit?’  Think about it:  Our national debt is increasing by $1,800,000,000 a day.  The Fed’s money-printing addiction has been diluting the dollar for years.  Near 0% interest rates are pummeling savers, while enriching the big banks.  That’s why it’s important to invest a portion of your wealth offshore, where the strongest growth opportunities exist in assets that help you retain (or even gain) purchasing power.”

Will Migrant Workers Drive Bitcoin’s Mundane Future?

“Several companies have determined that the biggest opportunity to prove their worth is in the decidedly boring race to help emigres handle remittances, a global market expected to total $550 billion this year, according to the World Bank.  The average fee on remittances is 9 percent of the transaction cost, and some banks charge additional ‘lifting’ fees of up to 5 percent when someone wants to turn the remittance into cash.  Sitting in the middle of money transmissions is a lucrative business. Western Union(WU) brought in $4.6 billion in transaction fees charged to consumers last year and almost $1 billion further in foreign-exchange revenue from its consumer business.”

State Department: “We cannot make India look at you as an American”

220px-GenIsaacBrock4

“If Mr. Nouman’s story has a happy ending and he makes it to India with a visa in his Pakistani passport instead of his U.S. passport, he’ll find in fact that the U.S. has been putting out all efforts for more than three years to make India and every other country on earth look at him as an American. The U.S. is so intent on achieving this that they’re threatening (through FATCA’s provisions on gross proceeds withholding) to confiscate 30% of U.S. assets owned by residents of other countries if those countries don’t look at you as an American for tax & banking purposes — even if that violates their own laws, and even if you have another passport and emigrated from the U.S. long ago.”

Americans Abroad Stranded as US Check Clearance Blocked

“U.S. citizens staying in Israel have discovered this week that they are no longer able to get Israeli shekels in exchange for their checks which are drawn to U.S. banks. Until this week, Israeli foreign exchange places would accept U.S. checks, at least from their regular customers, and would pay them out for a fee of 1 percent of their value. But this is no ,longer the case. ‘The problem is with the check clearance process,” a Jerusalem money changer told The Jewish Press. ‘No one outside the U.S. is able to do check clearance. It’s an international problem, it’s not a problem only in Israel.’ American banks are not processing for clearance any checks coming from outside the U.S.”

Is Switzerland Still Open to Americans?

“Switzerland, at this point, is the only country in Europe that does not allow for automatic information exchange or any regime whereby banks have no restrictions as to sharing detailed client and account information with other banks and tax authorities. Obviously, the pressure is on Switzerland to join the bandwagon. This, however, collides with Swiss client confidentiality and banking secrecy rules. And, according to recent polls, the Swiss people are not at all in favor of letting go of those privacy rights. The reason Switzerland has not joined yet is that such a step would certainly be subject to a national vote in Switzerland, as is the case with most critical changes of law.”

Libertarian Perspective on Switzerland

“Switzerland has unparalleled amounts of economic freedom in its region and is one of the most highly ranked countries in the world in this aspect. Property rights are well respected and they are friendly to foreign investors.  They also have relatively low taxes. The top federal income tax rate is 11.5 percent and the federal corporate tax rate is 8.5 percent, both of which are much lower than federal taxes in the United States.  Refusal to engage in the centralization of the monetary system of Europe and maintain independence is important from a libertarian standpoint. Perhaps this is part of the reason why the Swiss economy is doing so well.”
