“British visitors to the US may be asked for social media usernames and passwords and their phone’s address book under new border checks being considered at US airports. The Trump administration is considering ‘extreme vetting’ scenarios in which even tourists from US allies such as the UK, France and Germany are subject to intense security checks, according to the Wall Street Journal. ‘We will do it when we think there’s a reason to do it,’ US Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly told a US Senate committee hearing last week.”

The American Dream appears to be more attainable in Mexico and China
“70% of millennials in China and 46% of Mexican millennials own a home versus 35% of young adults in the U.S. Young people in China are benefiting from wage growth that is projected to outpace the rate of home price appreciation set last year. And the U.S. doesn’t just fall behind China — France (41%) also came out ahead. In the United Arab Emirates, only 26% of millennials own a home, and Australia does only slightly better at 28%. (The average millennial U.S. homeownership rate in a separate WalletHub study rested around 40%.)”
New Bill Would Outlaw Warrantless Border Phone Searches Of U.S. Citizens
“Four privacy-minded lawmakers have introduced legislation requiring law enforcement officials to obtain a warrant before searching phones belonging to US citizens, and prohibiting them from barring entry to Americans who decline to share their passwords at the border. ‘Americans’ Constitutional rights shouldn’t disappear at the border,’ Senator Ron Wyden said in statement to BuzzFeed News.”

The Trump Laptop Ban and What It Means for Air Travel
“Middle East airports and passengers are grappling with new U.S. and British rules barring laptops and other electronic gadgets in carry-on luggage. Both governments prohibited large electronic devices in the cabins of flights headed to their countries. In announcing the rules, officials cited security reasons but didn’t supply many specifics.”
So, Sir Patrick Stewart Wants to Become a US Citizen?
“There are a few things you should know before taking the plunge. I am happy to assist you with your pre-immigration US tax planning. Just let me know when you would like an appointment. If instead, you feel more comfortable speaking to a fellow Brit, I am sure Boris Johnson will be able to tell you a few things about the US tax system (and most likely, why you should avoid it at all costs).”

Suspension of U.S.-EU Visa-Free Travel Would Have Negative Consequences
“The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) warned that suspending visa-free travel would have a ‘large negative impact,’ including an additional 10 million annual visa applications to process. Additionally, the GBTA warned that if the United States retaliates with its own suspension of visa-free travel, it could mean approximately €2.5 billion in costs to EU citizens as roughly 8 million travelers would need to pay the $160 visa fee and other application costs. The GBTA also cited an Oxford Economics study that projected a 23 percent decline in travel revenue for the U.S. and Canada as a result of a suspension, as well as a projected 140,000 jobs lost in Europe and 73,000 jobs lost in the United States.”
¡Bienvenido a Cuba!
“In December 2016, the first US based airline touched down in the country’s capital city of Havana for the first time in more than 60 years. Not only was the market immediately flooded with capacity (Havana went from 0 service to the US to more than 25 daily flights) but flights were also dirt cheap. We were able to book round-trip from Tampa on Southwest for under $150 a person. The general consensus is that the US Government isn’t blinking an eye at those traveling to Cuba. So, what do you need as an American in order to travel to Cuba?”

Homeland Security to require social media passwords from US visitors
“Meeting with Congress on Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly suggested the United States could soon ask international visitors for passwords to social media accounts. ‘We want to get on their social media, with passwords: What do you do, what do you say?’ Kelly told the House Homeland Security Committee about the potential vetting measure, in a moment noted by NBC News. ‘If they don’t want to cooperate then you don’t come in.'”

IRS Moves To Revoke Passports For Unpaid Taxes
“President Trump’s executive order on travel may be generating big protests, but an IRS missive on travel and passports may not go down too well either. More than a year ago, in H.R.22, Congress gave the IRS a new weapon to collect taxes. Tax code Section 7345 is labeled, ‘Revocation or Denial of Passport in Case of Certain Tax Delinquencies.’ The law isn’t limited to criminal tax cases, or even cases where the IRS thinks you are trying to flee. The idea of the law is to use travel as a way to enforce tax collections. It was proposed and rejected in 2012. But by late 2015, Congress passed it and President Obama signed it. Now, over a year later, the IRS has finally released new details on its website.”
Trump blames post-travel ban airport chaos on Delta computer outage
“Trump cited a Delta computer failure, which caused delays and more than 300 flight cancellations, as a primary source of trouble at airports over the weekend. Trump on Friday signed an executive order that banned inbound travel from seven Muslim-majority countries. The order halted refugee arrivals into the US for 120 days, and it barred citizens of Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen for 90 days. It also indefinitely bars Syrian refugees from entering the US. The quick rollout of the order stranded some passengers from the seven countries in airports throughout the US and caused confusion among authorities over how the ban should be enforced.”
