Trump’s visa ban also applies to dual citizens

“Those who hold dual nationality in the seven countries banned from entering the U.S. by President Trump will also be barred from entering the country, the Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.  The Journal said it got an advance look at a statement by the State Department that the refugee ban extends beyond just citizens of Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Libya and Yemen, but also to people who may originally come from those countries but have a passport from another nation or dual nationality.”

Australia to Strip Dual Citizens of Citizenship for Suspected Terror Activities

“Legislation passed by the federal Senate late on Thursday will affect any person aged 14 or older, and in the case of a suspect whose activity takes place overseas, no conviction of a criminal offense will be necessary for the citizenship to be lost.  The legislation also allows the authorities to prevent any terrorist with dual nationality located abroad from returning to Australia, and to expel dual nationals who engage in terror activities in Australia, wherever possible. Several other Western countries have made similar amendments to citizenship legislation in recent years in response to the growing terror threat, including Canada and Britain.”

It’s (Almost) Official: Tax Debt = No Passport

“Both the House and the Senate have enacted versions of a highway funding bill (H.R. 22) containing this provision that is now before a conference committee. It’s likely to hit President Obama’s desk later this month.  The bill sets up a mechanism to deny or revoke your passport if you have a ‘seriously delinquent tax debt.’ This is defined as a tax debt that exceeds $50,000 for which the IRS has filed a notice of lien or levy.  The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates this measure will raise $398 million in tax revenues over the next decade. That’s enough to pay for about 0.1% – one tenth of one percent – of estimated highway expenditures during that period.”

The fee to get rid of US citizenship just went up (again)

Tina Turner did this but taking Swiss citizenship – something that took her well over a decade to get – with the intention of giving up her American passport.  It’s a bit of a semantics game, but it has worked for some folks. However, the US – with all of its nearly $20 trillion in debt – has caught on to yet another loophole by the ‘evil rich’, and has recently increased the fee for processing a citizenship relinquishment from $0 to the same $2,350 that renunciation costs.”

IRS Says You Owe Tax? Congress Will Take Your Passport Starting January 1

“House and Senate conference committee members worked this week on putting together a final version of the funding bill — the Surface Transportation Reauthorization and Reform Act (HR 22) — that would then be voted on in both houses of Congress. The conference committee can be expected to produce a bill including the passport denial and revocation provision given that such a provision was included in the bill’s versions already passed in the House and Senate. ‘The list of affected taxpayers will be compiled by the Internal Revenue Service using a threshold of $50,000 of unpaid federal taxes, including penalties and interest, which would be adjusted for inflation,’ predicts the WSJ.”

The US is doing its best as well.  One English-speaking country that already routinely confiscates or suspends passport Is Australia. It is hard to remember that this modern quasi-comprehensive passport system is basically less than 100 years old. In the 1800s, it was often considered unusual and sometimes even insulting to have to identify oneself with officially issued documents when traveling privately. All that changed before World War II with the introduction of Interpol and the passport system.”

US War on Your Passport Continues

“Buried inside the US highways funding bill is a provision to revoke or deny issuance of a US passport to anyone who has a large outstanding tax debt to the US Internal Revenue Service.  As can be seen from the summary, this measure threatening to imprison Americans within (or outside) US borders is simply viewed as a means by which to raise revenue. The hoped-for increase in revenue coming from this threat is considered an ‘offset’ to the money being spent on the highway bill — in other words the threat to imprison US citizens within their own country or freeze them out is considered appropriate incentive to force them to pay what the government claims it is owed.”

Lawmakers Vote to Let Obama Take Your Passport Without Trial

“The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted to give the Obama administration the unilateral power to strip you of your passport and right to travel without a trial or even criminal charges. The scheme does not even include a way to challenge your status as a non-person involuntarily trapped inside U.S. borders on orders from the secretary of state. Lawmakers, some of whom could themselves be caught in the dragnet along with myriad administration officials, praised the effort as a way to stop alleged terrorists from travelling. But critics said it was yet another attack on the fundamental rights of Americans, such as due-process protections, and that it must be resisted.”

“It’s no secret that governments worldwide are broke. One country after another is cutting social benefits and taking other measures to reduce government spending.  Take France, for instance. It’s under pressure from the EU to reduce its budget deficit to 3% of GDP. That’s the maximum permitted under the Maastricht Treaty, the agreement underpinning the EU. Currently, it’s at about 4%.  To comply with these rules, France cut family allowances and reduced grants to local authorities. It’s also started a renewed crackdown against tax evasion. It even laid off 7,500 soldiers. But that’s not all. France also recently expanded incentives for new residents.”
