US looks at ways to prevent spying on its spying

“The U.S. government is looking at ways to prevent anyone from spying on its own surveillance of Americans’ phone records.  As the Obama administration considers shifting the collection of those records from the National Security Agency to requiring that they be stored at phone companies or elsewhere, it’s quietly funding research to prevent phone company employees or eavesdroppers from seeing whom the U.S. is spying on, The Associated Press has learned.  Under the research, U.S. data mining would be shielded by secret coding that could conceal identifying details from outsiders and even the owners of the targeted databases, according to public documents and interviews.”

Jamie Dimon is not a Bitcoin fan despite JPMorgan filing similar patent

“JPMorgan chief executive Jamie Dimon is not a fan of Bitcoin because ‘a lot of it is being used for illicit purposes’. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Wall Street supremo said the virtual currency is a ‘terrible store of money’ and questioned its legal status over allegations that it is used to fund illegal activities. ‘It doesn’t have the standing of a government,’ Dimon told CNBC.  Dimon, 57, also warned that Bitcoin faces major regulatory hurdles going forward and drew an interesting comparison between the banking industry and the virtual currency.”

Blackwater Founder Erik Prince: War on Terror Has Become Too Big

“Erik Prince is not the kind of man one expects to make the case for slashing U.S. intelligence and military budgets.  ‘America is way too quick to trade freedom for the illusion of security,’ he told The Daily Beast. ‘Whether it’s allowing the NSA to go way too far in what it intercepts of our personal data, to our government monitoring of everything domestically and spending way more than we should. I don’t know if I want to live in a country where lone wolf and random terror attacks are impossible ‘cause that country would look more like North Korea than America.’  He said he will never work for the U.S. government again.”

In San Francisco, It’s Illegal to Store Your Own Stuff in Your Own Garage

“San Francisco is plagued with thousands of scofflaws. Their crime? Storing anything that isn’t a car in their garage.  According to Chapter 6 of the San Francisco Housing Code, ‘Private and public storage garages in apartment houses and hotels shall be used only for storage of automobiles.’ Failing to comply with the law can lead to fines of up to $500.  The law is particularly silly since many San Franciscans are proud cyclists. Take Kimberly Conley. She has a home in the Mission District with her husband, but no car. Because of the city’s code, she’s technically breaking the law every time she stores her bike in her garage.”

Economist Mag Defends Fed With an Ode to the Dead

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Today, powerful people situated strategically around the Fed are protecting that institution and its members. But times are not what they were. There is the Internet to contend with and a mood of informed populism in the US that does not bode well for a continued Fed coverup. Thus, the Fed faces an institutional conundrum. The public pressure on the Fed in the long run will surely not let up. In fact, it may subside a little as the Fed tends to this latest stock market bubble, what we have called a ‘Wall Street Party.’ But when the party is ending and insiders (and hopefully you, dear reader) have drunk their fill of the bubbly and retired, there will be Hell to pay.”

German police detect neo-Nazi music with new app

“The software has been written by the regional police in Saxony and has been described in government documents as able to ‘spare resources and enable very quick investigations’.  It can pick out the common audio fingerprints of neo-Nazi rock music and could identify racist songs even if they have never before been heard by police or analysed by the software. The interior ministers of Germany’s 16 states will meet to discuss using what has become known as the ‘Nazi Shazam’ later this week.  Police could use the software to routinely monitor internet radio stations, small gatherings of suspects and public events with live music.”

Farce of Globalism: World Bank Becomes Top Cop?

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The World Bank has a new mission. The Economic Times tells us that the World Bank has a new enemy to confront. It is not poverty but ‘corruption.’  The reason that these enormous global facilities are receiving more and more power and authority is not because they work well or even work at all. It is because the internationalists who set them up want them to expand as a way of building world government. Call it directed history. These agents of globalism will continually acquire power no matter the reality of their missions. They were never what they appeared to be. In the 21st century, it becomes increasingly apparent as the Internet Reformation era advances.”

New Barbados currency ‘more secure’ [May 2013]

“Producers of fake Barbados money should not be smiling all the way to the bank anytime soon.  On the heels of what it said was ‘an increase in counterfeit activity in 2012’, the Central Bank of Barbados has unveiled the island’s first new banknotes in 40 years.  Central Bank of Barbados officials and representatives from British-based currency printer De La Rue officially introduced the new notes this morning at the Grande Salle, Tom Adams Financial Centre, saying they carried advanced security features within a modern design that was in the making for the last three years.”

Cyprus central bank: Bitcoin use dangerous

“The Central Bank (CBC) has said use of virtual currency bitcoin is extremely dangerous, the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) said on Tuesday.  ‘Using any virtual money is extremely dangerous because they are not monitored by any authority, thus operating without control,’ CNA said, quoting the CBC.  In a written response later on Tuesday, Danny Brewster the CEO of Neo & Bee, the largest business in the world that is building infrastructure around the Bitcoin technology, said he had been trying for the past two weeks to reach and arrange a meeting with the CBC so that it could operate under the appropriate regulatory framework.”

Girl, 11, ordered not to sell mistletoe; begging for braces money is fine

“A private security guard asked Madison to stop selling because city ordinance bans commerce like that without proper approval.  The Saturday Market is incredibly diverse.  You can buy whistles, order crepes and sign a marijuana petition all without walking more than ten steps.  But you can’t open a business without going through the market’s formal application process. The market sets rules for vendors which Madison agrees make sense.  Begging is different.  That’s a form of free speech, protected under the First Amendment, explains Mark Ross, spokesman for the Portland Parks Bureau, which manages the city park and rents it to the Saturday Market.”
