Greenwald: NSA’s view of drone opponents as ‘threats’ and ‘adversaries’

“Under the title ‘adversary propaganda themes’, the document lists what it calls ‘examples of potential propaganda themes that could be employed against UAV operations’. It states:  ‘Attacks against American and European persons who have become violent extremists are often criticized by propagandists, arguing that lethal action against these individuals deprives them of due process.’  In the eyes of the US government, ‘due process’ – the idea that the US government should not deprive people of life away from a battlefield without presenting evidence of guilt – is no longer a basic staple of the American political system, but rather a malicious weapon of ‘propagandists’.”

Fresno: Laboratory for Martial Law

“Six police departments will participate in the initiative, which will gather surveillance videos and information from huge computer databases for use by a half-dozen ‘crime analysts.’ Those officials will identify so-called ‘hot spots’ and try to anticipate criminal activity before it occurs.  This system is an adaptation of the ‘pattern-of-life’ analysis used by counter-insurgency forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. Beginning in 1994, the Fresno PD’s Violent Crime Suppression Unit, which describes itself as the department’s ‘special forces’ auxiliary conducted block-by-block house searches and saturation patrols in targeted neighborhoods.”

Masked DEA Agents Raid Innocent Women, Refuse To Reveal Identities

“According to the Burleys’ accounts, the officers who raided their home were clad in black. Some wore balaclava masks or face shields that hid all but their eyes. Others pulled their hats down low to shield their identities. They had also obscured their names and badge numbers. Once the Burleys’ house had been thoroughly searched, both women asked the officers for their names. After holding an impromptu meeting, the officers told the Burleys that they wouldn’t divulge any information that could identify them individually. Instead, they told the women that they had just been raided by ‘Team 11.’ The women weren’t given a search warrant.”

100 to 115 SWAT raids per day in the US

“We are talking 100 to 115 SWAT raid per day in the U.S., and if we are going to continue to fight the drug war we need to go after these low and mid level offenders. There’s just not enough police man power, there’s just not enough creative non-violent ways to come up with to get them to turn themselves in.  This has become the default way to carry out the drug war…bashing into somebody’s home at night. It’s born from just an overwhelming case flows, and also a lack of creativity. You also have a lot of incentives coming from the federal government that encourage warrants to be served this way.”

Continuity of Operations – Wikipedia

“The George W. Bush administration put the Continuity of Operations plan into effect for the first time directly following the September 11 attacks. The Bush administration did not acknowledge the implementation of the COG plan until March 1, 2002.  On July 18, 2007, Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR), a member of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security, requested the classified and more detailed version of the government’s continuity of government plan in a letter signed by him and the chairperson of the House Homeland Committee, which is supposed to have access to confidential government information. The president refused to provide the information.”

Obama quietly extends post-9/11 state of national emergency

“Twelve years after the worst terrorist attack in American history, President Obama yet again extended his predecessor’s Declaration of National Emergency for another year. The declaration, which was originally put into place on September 14, 2001, was renewed on Tuesday.  Shortly after he renewed the declaration of a national emergency, President Obama obliquely hinted at the gradual accumulation of executive power in his speech on the Syria crisis. The past decade, he said, ‘put more and more war-making power in the hands of the president.'”

Armed EPA raid in Alaska sheds light on 70 fed agencies with armed divisions

“The recent uproar over armed EPA agents descending on a tiny Alaska mining town is shedding light on the fact that 40 federal agencies – including nearly a dozen typically not associated with law enforcement — have armed divisions.  The agencies employ about 120,000 full-time officers authorized to carry guns and make arrests, according to a June 2012 Justice Department report.  Though most Americans know agents within the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Federal Bureau of Prisons carry guns, agencies such as the Library of Congress and Federal Reserve Board employing armed officers might come as a surprise.”

Open Carry Chicks Hassled by Power Hungry Cop & AR-15

“Four young ladies went for a quick bite to eat in Marshfield Missouri at a local Walmart. Two of them were open carrying not knowing they would be confronted by a Nazi-styled ‘show-me-your-papers’ local police officer.  Of course, they bring out the big guns for these gun-toting ‘thugs.'”

Jeffrey Tucker: 3 Important Lessons from a Canadian Border Crossing

“I was at the Canadian border, headed toward the freedom that exists a few feet beyond the last security check. I was gently waved down a side corridor.  Ninety minutes later, I was let go, but not before something truly alarming happened. I’m pretty sure that the Canadian government captured a mirrored version of my smartphone — which pretty much holds the whole of my life. I’ll explain precisely how this happened in just a bit — in the hopes that perhaps you can take precautions that I did not. But let’s first establish that this practice is not unusual. According to documents obtained by the ACLU, this has become the standard backdoor method of search used today by governments around the world.”
