Nothing in my life will ever compare to the horror of living under communism. It’s not nearly as powerful as today’s first-person presentation, but the video will give you some sense of the utter barbarity of the North Korean government.  Perhaps now you understand why I get so upset when people in the west glorify communist thugs such as Che Guevara, or use the Soviet hammer and sickle as a cutesy marketing gimmick.”

Why Amazon’s Fighting So Hard for a CIA Cloud Contract

“Amazon actually won the contract to build private-cloud infrastructure for the CIA in January, but IBM asked the GAO to reopen the agreement to bidding. Amazon locking down a $600 million cloud contract was clearly viewed as a serious competitive threat by IBM, which already supplies IT infrastructure to the U.S. intelligence community. Big Blue managed to successfully argue that, because it bid lower than Amazon, the contract-approval process should be reconsidered.  If Amazon wins the contract and pulls that project off to the CIA’s satisfaction, it could open the door to still more federal contracts—and make the online retailer a genuine threat to longtime fed-tech contractors.”

“As reported by David Knight, California law enforcement is now confiscating legally purchased guns from registered gun owners who have been labeled ‘Armed Prohibited Persons’ (APPs.)  Police shoved two M16s within inches of gun owner Joe Mendez’s face during a raid on his house to seize his legally-purchased firearms.  Fourteen officers total were involved.  Police even showed up later to lie to Mendez’s wife about the raid, saying that they were only taking a report after her car was involved in a ‘hit and run.’ All of the targeted APPs had purchased their firearms legally but the State of California declared afterwards that they were prohibited from gun ownership.”

Hoover used these vague new powers to investigate not just Nazis but anyone he thought subversive.  The social history of wiretaps is a history of mission creep, where FBI agents initially hunting for wartime Nazi spies soon monitored progressive activists fighting racial segregation.”

SWAT Cop: American Neighborhoods Are ‘Battlefields’

“This battlefield mindset is the product of a generation of politicians telling police that they’re at war with things — drugs, terrorism, crime, etc. — and have then equipped them with the uniforms, tactics, weapons, and other accoutrements of war. One essay by Sgt. Glenn French was particularly disturbing. French serves as commander of a SWAT team in Sterling Heights, Michigan. French doesn’t criticize me for arguing that too many police officers have adopted this battlefield mindset. Rather, he embraces the combat mentality, and encourages other cops to do the same.”

“The front entrance is card key secured, and a thick metal door attached to a gated metal security tunnel with a metal walkway leads back to a hallway of numbered, metal buildings. Every single window, including the little ones on the thick metal doors inside, have metal gratings bolted on the outside of them. It felt like I was walking through a medium security prison facility. Four-year-olds attend this campus. That means these little ones are spending the majority of their weekdays all day long inside this place.”
