T.S.A. Expands Duties Beyond Airport Security

“With little fanfare, the agency best known for airport screenings has vastly expanded its reach to sporting events, music festivals, rodeos, highway weigh stations and train terminals. Not everyone is happy. T.S.A. and local law enforcement officials say the teams are a critical component of the nation’s counterterrorism efforts, but some members of Congress, auditors at the Department of Homeland Security and civil liberties groups are sounding alarms. T.S.A. officials would not say if the VIPR teams had ever foiled a terrorist plot or thwarted any major threat to public safety, saying the information is classified.”

California’s first mobile Amber Alert shocks strangers

“FEMA sends out Amber Alerts from cell towers in locations near the abduction. The alerts can pop up on new phones with Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) capabilities, or phones that get the corresponding software update. It’s a voluntary system, and participating wireless companies were required to add WEA services to their phones by April 7, 2012.  Californians were angry and confused about the Amber Alert, scared by an alarming phone notification they didn’t know they had. The reaction mirrors New Yorkers’ response a few weeks ago, when the first New York City mobile Amber Alert woke people up at 4 in the morning.”

Drama: Yemen, Guantanamo Bay, Stamford, CT

EPJ13

“I commute to work in Stamford, CT. I take the Metro North almost daily. Today, in light of the ‘terrorist’ threat I was greeted with the Stamford Police and other law enforcement at the top of the escalator leading from the track. They were checking for traces of explosive material. Some people were being singled out to go through a swab test[…]. My co-worker who arrives later than I do told me he was singled out for a quick swab and when he complained he was told he ‘better get used to it’ and ‘this is for our protection.'”

Is America Going to Hell in a Handbasket?

google-search-header2

“While there is very little chance that an Islamic terrorist will ever have any effect on your life, there is a much greater chance that your life will be abused, molested, robbed, assaulted, terrorized or murdered by an American government official. And you ‘progressives’ out there are just as responsible for turning America into the current police state as are the conservatives and neocons, by the way. But the truth is still difficult for many people to handle. So, as America has reached Hell in a handbasket, people still would rather believe the myth that government is a ‘necessary evil,’ or that when it gets very, very bad, it can be ‘reformed.'”

Are Police in America Now a Military, Occupying Force?

AGOW_WebAD_Small2

“Today, the SWAT team is largely sold to the American public by way of the media, through reality TV shows such as Cops, Armed and Famous, and Police Women of Broward County, and by politicians well-versed in promising greater security in exchange for the government being given greater freedom to operate as it sees fit outside the framework of the Constitution. Having watered down the Fourth Amendment’s strong prohibitions intended to keep police in check and functioning as peacekeepers, we now find ourselves in the unenviable position of having militarized standing armies enforcing the law.”

How the U.S. DEA program differs from recent NSA revelations

“Reuters has uncovered previously unreported details about a separate program, run by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, that extends well beyond intelligence gathering. Its use, legal experts say, raises fundamental questions about whether the government is concealing information used to investigate and help build criminal cases against American citizens. The DEA program is run by a secretive unit called the Special Operations Division, or SOD. Here is how NSA efforts exposed by Snowden differ from the activities of the SOD.”

Federal Court Upholds Random ‘Papers Please’ License Roadblocks

“Motorists suspected of no wrongdoing can be pulled over and their license searched in a database regardless of whether they are suspected of having done anything wrong, a federal court ruled on Thursday. The US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit found no problem with the way the New York City Police Department (NYPD) handled a roadblock that impeded traffic for two hours in the Bronx on October 5, 2010 just before midnight.   Each person traveling on the road was stopped and ordered to produce his license which an officer ran through the NYPD ‘Finest’ program that checks with NYSpin (New York Statewide Police Information Network).”

Glenn Greenwald: Members of Congress denied access to basic information about NSA

“It is not merely that members of Congress are unaware of the very existence of these programs, let alone their capabilities. Beyond that, members who seek out basic information – including about NSA programs they are required to vote on and FISA court (FISC) rulings on the legality of those programs – find that they are unable to obtain it. Two House members, GOP Rep. Morgan Griffith of Virginia and Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida, have provided the Guardian with numerous letters and emails documenting their persistent, and unsuccessful, efforts to learn about NSA programs and relevant FISA court rulings.”

When Price Controls Reach Your Dining Table

“Those of us who are West Indian (Caribbean) have had, over the last fifty years, the opportunity to observe this situation previously in island nations that made the mistake of choosing socialism or communism as a ‘better way,’ then discovered the way in which collectivism limits or eliminates basic necessities. In particular, in Cuba, a toilet paper shortage twenty years ago resulted in restaurants hiring aides to sit by the door of the loo and hand out paper – six squares to a diner. Observing the above occurrences seems almost comical… unless you are actually experiencing it first-hand. Then it is not humorous at all.”

Free State Project Demands Apology For “Domestic Terrorism” Claims In Tank Grant Application

“As president of the Free State Project (‘FSP’), a NH-based non-profit organization with the sole mission of attracting 20,000 pro-freedom people to the Granite State, I am alarmed and appalled at the cleverly worded insinuation that the FSP is a domestic terrorist threat, or that ‘Free Staters’ are ‘active and present daily challenges’ to the Concord Police Department. Individuals who sign up for the FSP generally subscribe to an ethical stance which asserts that ‘aggression’ is inherently illegitimate. Sadly, the DHS grant application only came to light through an ACLU public records request, and not as a result of transparent governance.”
