Congress proposes adding $4.5 billion to historic highs spent on border security

“Federal spending on border security is at an all-time high — and it would get even higher under the Gang of Eight’s new plan. The Senate immigration proposal, released last week, would allocate $4.5 billion in the next five years to tighten control of U.S. borders.  The U.S. spent nearly $18 billion dollars on immigration enforcement agencies last fiscal year, more than all other law enforcement agencies combined.  The bill requires buying as many drones as needed to have 24/7 surveillance of the Southwest border. The U.S. has already purchased 10 border drones, which cost $18 million a piece and roughly $3,000 an hour to operate.”

Where Nervous Europeans Are Really Putting Their Money

EPJ13

“Demand for $100 bills has jumped since 2008 as nervous Europeans stuff them under the mattress, providing vivid proof that the world still loves the dollar and confirming the benefit to the US of the currency’s status as a global reserve.  The amount of dollar cash in circulation has risen by 42 per cent in the last five years, with a main reason being demand from Europe, according to a top US Federal Reserve official.  According to one set of estimates by the Fed in Washington, the share of US currency held abroad has risen from about 56 per cent to nearly 66 per cent in the last five years.  It amounts to a $19bn-a-year gift from the rest of the world.”

Mark Carney: Canadian deposits safe under bail-in, but no guarantee

“Mark Carney says policy-makers are working diligently to devise an international ‘bail-in’ regime to prevent big bank failures, but he offered no guarantee that individual deposits would be protected.  The Canadian central banker, who is a few months away from heading the Bank of England, says banks must have a set of buffers in place to draw on in an emergency.  He notes the Canadian government has pledged not to dip into individual deposits.  Carney did not answer whether there should be a total hands-off treatment to non-secured accounts as well, which in Canada would mean deposits over $100,000.”

Obama: US Tyranny Impossible Because ‘Government Is Us’

“The government is most assuredly not us – at least not all of us – which is why our system of government is designed to protect the rights of minorities while still allowing majorities to legislate without violating those rights. Obama’s defense to charges of incipient tyranny is that tyranny can never happen here. Which, of course, makes it more likely that tyranny will happen here.  The second odd angle is Obama’s insistence that the Constitution constrains him. The natural inference seems to be that if it were not for the Constitution, Obama would indeed pursue a federal gun seizure.”

U.S. criticizes ‘unnecessary’ EU rules on genetically modified crops

“The United States on Monday criticized ‘unnecessary’ European Union rules against genetically modified US crop imports as it prepares to enter free-trade talks with the EU.  EU restrictions notably have resulted in delays in the approval of new GM traits ‘despite positive assessments by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA),’ the US Trade Representative’s office said in a report on reducing trade sanitary barriers.  The USTR also criticized the EU for imposing ‘commercially infeasible requirements’ on GE content in food products under EU Traceability and Labeling regulations.”

Another Warning About Switching Your Healthcare Plan

EPJ13

“Those that have money will be paying not only for their own coverage, but will be paying for those with lower-than-average incomes, as well as for the new new automatically included coverages (e.g. maternity) that must be covered in the new mandated plans, all relating to younger folks (which is why income, rather than age, will now be the deciding factor in the cost of health plans) .  Worse, those without health plans will be charged a percentage of income (going up each year) for NOT having a qualified plan!  Speak with professionals before considering making any changes if you have been on a continuous plan since 3/2010.”

IRS Reneges on Offshore Asset Voluntary Disclosure Deals

“If you took advantage of one of the three amnesty programs and were accepted, the IRS promised only to hit you with the back taxes, various penalties and interest.  The good news was that you would escape criminal charges and time in prison.  You now have an empty bank account, but at least you also have the peace of mind that the IRS won’t be knocking at your door, right?  Wrong.  Earlier this month, the IRS sent faxes to tax attorneys across the country telling them that clients who it had previously been accepted in the current voluntary disclosure program, the ‘Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Initiative’ (OVDI) are now mysteriously ‘disqualified.'”

LAPD takes aim at wave of Asian ‘maternity tourists’

“Something is happening in the suburbs of Los Angeles.  Nearby, a string of so-called ‘maternity hotels,’ where Asian women — often Chinese and Taiwanese — come to give birth to babies who will automatically acquire a US passport — has recently drawn the attention of authorities.  There is nothing illegal about foreign women giving birth in the United States. But federal officials are investigating possible related crimes, while local officials say planning regulations may have been violated.”

FCC chairman developing plan for free wireless Internet access

“The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is developing a set of proposals that would establish a public wifi network that blankets the country with a high powered signal anyone can access for free.  Such a sweeping change would be years in the making, but companies lobbying for it say that universal Internet access could spark an explosion of innovation and help usher in a new age of prosperity. Networks of the type FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski is envisioning would enable cars to communicate with one another to avoid accidents, bring millions of new devices online and truly make the Internet an unavoidable, ubiquitous part of everyday life.”

How The Central Bank Of Turkey Uses Gold

“Amid the brouhaha over Germany’s gold reserves at the Bundesbank, there’s another central bank using gold actively to bolster its currency and financial stability.  The strategy looks the same – sitting on big stockpiles of the stuff. But the aim differs, because gold is much closer to the everyday financial system. Starting in October 2011, the central bank began allowing commercial banks to hold a portion of their ‘required reserves’ – needed to reassure depositors and other creditors they had plenty of money to hand – in physical gold bullion. Starting at 10%, that proportion was then raised to 30%.”
