Department of Homeland Security Giving Firms Free Penetration Tests

“The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been quietly launching stealthy cyber attacks against a range of private U.S. companies — mostly banks and energy firms. These digital intrusion attempts, commissioned in advance by the private sector targets themselves, are part of a little-known program at DHS designed to help ‘critical infrastructure’ companies shore up their computer and network defenses against real-world adversaries. And it’s all free of charge (well, on the U.S. taxpayer’s dime).  According to data provided by DHS, the majority of the program’s private sector participation come from the energy and financial services industries.”

Worst. Retirement. Option. Ever.

“Roth IRAs, which is what the MyRA is, already exist and can be funded with as little as a few hundred dollars.  So the gap that supposedly exists doesn’t really exist at all.  Sure, the MyRA is extremely easy to join and backed by the U.S. government — which doesn’t say much when you look at the extreme level of debt our government has. But it generates a paltry 3% return at best. Almost any other diversified mutual fund will generate substantially better returns over time.  Therefore, the MyRA doesn’t really serve a purpose at all, except for providing the government with buyers of its debt at a time when the largest buyer — the Federal Reserve — has stopped buying.”

Ending the Ownership of Money

im-header-logo-grey1

“The overriding effect that the elimination of cash will have on people will be that they will lose their freedom of monetary movement. They will be subject to government and banking surveillance of every transaction and, increasingly, will be subject to legislation that limits currency movement.  Once this point is reached, governments will be free to move to a stage in which they declare that money is not the possession of the individual or company. It’s the possession of the government and the government ‘allows’ the public to use its currency in order to conduct commerce. As such, individuals and companies had best ‘behave,’ or they might find the privilege taken away and the money confiscated.”

Secession: Armed vs. Peaceful

portallogo3

The young men of the revolution had to settle for political offices in the states. The war was over. Wartime centralization ended. The national government of the United States of America had little influence after 1783. It had to have unanimous support of the states to pass any law, and it could only rarely get this. There were tight chains on national political power. The result was another secession movement organized by the young men of the revolution: secession from the Articles of Confederation.  In the summer of 1787, a closed conclave was held in Philadelphia. No outsider was allowed to attend. It was held on the second floor, so that no citizen could hear the debates.”

IBM, central banks adapting bitcoin technology for major currencies

“The company has been in informal discussions about a blockchain-tied cash system with a number of central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve, the source said. If central banks approve the concept, IBM will build the secure and scalable infrastructure for the project.  Unlike bitcoin, where the network is decentralized and there is no overseer, the proposed digital currency system would be controlled by central banks, the source said.  According to the plans, the digital currency could be linked to a person’s bank account, possibly using a wallet software that would integrate that account with the proposed digital currency ledger.”

‘Fake’ Reform: Little to Celebrate as USA Freedom Act Passes House

“Despite strong objections from critics, the bill reauthorized Section 215 for other uses and expanded other surveillance mechanisms and powers for government agencies.  Though some progressive groups found it possible to support the bill for its strong stance against the domestic phone records program, tougher critics said that though they welcome the end of that specific program, the USA Freedom Act’s re-authorization of broader Patriot Act powers could not be ignored.  Advocacy groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the ACLU had offered some initial support to earlier versions of the bill, but both groups ultimately withdrew their backing of the law once it reached its final form.”

Fight the Fed from the Inside

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The Community Advisory Council will meet semiannually with the Board in Washington to offer diverse perspectives on the economic circumstances and financial services needs of consumers and communities, with a particular focus on the concerns of low- and moderate-income populations. The Fed says it wants ‘diverse perspectives’ on our financial concerns. One such perspective, held by many citizens, is that fiat money harms everyone, especially the ‘low- and moderate-income Americans’ upon which it expects this Council to focus. Will the Fed’s new advisory council include that perspective?”

European Commission president calls for building an EU army

“The European Union needs its own army to help address the problem that it is not ‘taken entirely seriously’ as an international force, the president of the European commission has said.  Jean-Claude Juncker said such a move would help the EU to persuade Russia that it was serious about defending its values in the face of the threat posed by Moscow. Juncker, a longstanding advocate of an EU army, said getting member states to combine militarily would make spending more efficient and would encourage further European integration.  A spokesman for Ukip said Juncker’s comments vindicated warnings that his party had been giving about the direction of EU policy for years.”

Government, Stop Trying to “Help” Uber

“Driven by their desire for more satisfied customers — and hence more business and more revenue — Uber and Lyft have established additional rules about insurance requirements, drivers’ customer-satisfaction ratings, vehicle age, vehicle cleanliness, the responsibility to pick up all qualified riders, and response times. They are constantly evolving their rules, pricing, and services in response to public demand and desire.  Where is evidence that ridesharing requires any additional legislated rules?”

IMF: infrastructure spending spree last chance to revive growth

“Britain and other advanced economies should take advantage of ultra-low borrowing costs to lift spending on key infrastructure projects and boost the global recovery, according to the International Monetary Fund.  The IMF said a debt-funded investment spree could ‘pay for itself’ if projects were chosen wisely, as government spending would stimulate demand, create jobs, and support longer-term growth. However it warned against governments embarking on a blind spending spree, which would push up debt piles without stimulating growth. Spending on infrastructure would only have a positive impact if policymakers conducted ‘rigorous’ cost-benefit analyses.”
