Massachusetts prodded by feds on REAL ID with security restrictions

“Starting in April, Massachusetts residents will be prevented from using their licenses to gain access to some federal buildings — unless, of course, state officials give in and quickly adopt the Homeland Security ‘Real ID’ verification program.  Then, as soon as 2016, the punishment will get more serious: Massachusetts residents will be prevented from boarding commercial aircraft if they do not provide another identity document to security screeners.  It is all part of an effort by Homeland Security to prod states to follow the requirements of the 2005 law that stiffened requirements on driver’s licenses.  In states following Real ID requirements, driver’s licenses feature a star.”

Armed Mundanes: The Reason Why SWAT Teams Exist

Police in Ankeny, Iowa deployed a 12-member SWAT team in full battle array to execute a warrant in an investigation of alleged credit card fraud. The invasion of Sally Prince’s home was captured on camera, despite efforts to destroy the home security cameras used to record their crime.  The invaders did not find any of the items listed in the search warrant. Captain Makai Echer insisted that the military-style assault was necessary and justified because the department was aware that an occupant of the home had a firearms permit.  Gun ownership is one of the key considerations in the standardized ‘Threat Matrix’ used in planning SWAT operations.”

Bankers balk as Postal Service plans payday loans, digital currency

“Payday loans, check cashing and digital currency exchanges were among the possibilities outlined in the Jan. 27 report.  The 27-page document also notes that as the country moves toward a cashless economy, the Postal Service could also provide simple ways for underserved consumers to ‘convert their cash to digital currency’ or other electronic payment methods like prepaid cards, mobile payments and wire transfers.  Two days after the paper came out, the IG held an invitation-only seminar in Virginia to discuss virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, as well as the potential benefits and disruptive effects they may have on traditional payment networks.”

Visa, MasterCard To End Swipe-And-Sign By 2015

“Both MasterCard and Visa have outlined a planned shift to the new EMV system and set a October 2015 deadline to begin using the system, The Wall Street Journal reports.  Under the EMV system consumers will use a smartcard embedded with microchip and provide their PIN to complete a transaction. The chips make reproducing a card difficult for criminals. Even if the credit card information is gathered, without the chip the card is useless.  Another significant piece of the new system is creating a shift of liability.  If a merchant is using the old swipe-and-sign system they are liable for the fraudulent charges if the customer has a chip card.”

Auroracoin is a cryptocurrency for Iceland

“The Airdrop will start to take place on March 25th 2014. A national ID database, created by the government will be used for this purpose. Although the thorough registration of the entire Icelandic nation into one database is unfortunate, it creates opportunities to reach a large part of the public through various means. About 330,000 Icelanders will be made able to claim f 31.8 each over the following year.”

Bill Bonner: Stay Away from Obama’s MyRAs…

Bill-Bonner2

“Japan’s government bonds were bought by its own old people (or their pension funds). They put their savings in the safest possible place – government bonds – to be used to finance their retirements.  How will the Japanese government make good on all these bonds?  The answer is the same as the answer to this question: How will this debt-financed hullabaloo turn out?  Simple: Japan will stiff its own grey-haired creditors – either by inflation or by default.  Argentina, by the way, is already ahead of the game. It nationalized private retirement funds – to ‘protect’ them, of course.  And now, the president aims to ‘protect’ US retirees in the same way.”

MyRA: “A Start To A Secure Retirement”, Promises Treasury Secretary

logo3

“You didn’t think the US could at first slowly, and then all of a sudden, expropriate retirement accounts and invest them in the ‘no risk, guaranteed return‘ MyRA Ponzi scheme introduced by Obama during the State of the Union address without lots of behavior-modifying indoctrination in the ‘friendly press’ first now did you? Sure enough, here is the first major propaganda salvo, coming from none other than the US Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew, which will be published tomorrow across the McClatchy media empire.”

Washington State Edges Closer to Taxing Drivers by the Mile

“Lawmakers in Washington state are edging closer to implementing a new system that would monitor and tax drivers based on miles driven, under a proposal supposedly centered around transportation funding sustainability.  In a dizzying twist of logic, the Commission and DOT blame the prevalence of fuel-efficient cars as the reason the state now needs a per-mile tax, arguing that ‘the move to cleaner, smarter vehicles must be accompanied by a change in the way we pay for our roads.’  Last week, a committee set up by the Transportation Commission, after concluding a $1.4 million study, reported the fee could generate upwards of $3 billion.”

Obama unveils new retirement savings plan: ‘MyRA’

“Obama said he would direct the Treasury Department to create new ‘MyRA’ accounts to allow people to more simply invest in Treasury bonds.  The MyRA bond would be like a Roth IRA: Your contributions would not be tax-deductible, but your earnings would be free from tax when you withdraw it. As with a Roth, your contributions can be taken out tax-free at any time.  Employers who offer the option won’t have to administer them. And if they automatically enroll employees — which they won’t be required to do — those employees will have a greater chance of accumulating retirement savings.”

The Emerging Bitcoin Civil War

“A civil war is emerging between Bitcoin’s earliest and most libertarian adopters, and a more commercial wing seeking to embrace regulation as a means of legitimizing Bitcoin businesses.  On the first day of hearings about the future of Bitcoin regulation convened this week by the New York Department of Financial Services, a panel of VCs were quick to disavow Shrem as an example of a more immature wing of Bitcoin. The Winklevoss twins said they were gratified the Department was discussing ways to help legitimize Bitcoin commerce.  Their Bitcoin ETF is awaiting regulatory approval from the SEC.”
