Man sues two officers for $100 million after he was wrongfully jailed

“A Cincinnati man sued two Norwood police officers for $100 million after he was wrongfully jailed for nearly two months on felony cocaine charges even though video footage would have shown they had the wrong man.  Maurice Snow, 29, filed the federal civil rights lawsuit against a detective and lieutenant at the Norwood Police Department on Monday, accusing them of turning his life upside-down and recklessly violating his constitutional rights by detaining him without probable cause.  WCPO reporter Amy Wadas talked with Snow on the phone just one day after he filed the lawsuit. He told her he cannot find work or a decent place to live.”

Don’t just legalize marijuana, free prior offenders

“When Colorado legalized marijuana via its 2012 ballot initiative, it made no stipulation about the fate of those already convicted of marijuana crimes. If you were sitting in prison for selling pot, you’re still there. If you were ever convicted of a felony marijuana charge, it’s still on your record.  The United States is one of only 22 countries that doesn’t guarantee what’s called ‘retroactive ameliorative relief’ in sentencing. This puts us in the company of such bastions of social justice as Pakistan, Oman and South Sudan.  If Germany were to legalize marijuana, on the other hand, those convicted of weed crimes would see their sentences commuted, according to the USF report.”

This is insane, given that he would then be held without due process and would have no means to challenge his detention (Catch 22). Our attorneys want to argue that Hedges has standing because the detention is impacting Hedge’s freedom of the press, thereby creating the kind of ‘case or controversy’ that has traditionally created standing.  The Second Court also mistakenly misread the provision as PREVENTING such detentions, when it actually authorizes them. The proposed brief will correct this error.”

Metal detectors at ballparks by 2015

“Entering a big league ballpark will be a bit like going through an airport by 2015.  Major League Baseball has told its 30 teams they must implement security screening for fans by then, either with hand-held metal detection or walk-through magnetometers.  ‘This procedure, which results from MLB’s continuing work with the Department of Homeland Security to standardize security practices across the game, will be in addition to bag checks that are now uniform throughout MLB,’ baseball spokesman Michael Teevan said Tuesday.  In an effort to increase security this season, the NFL limited the size and type of bags fans can bring to games.”

Student Jailed For Buying Common Grocery Item Is Now Suing

“Her purchase? A case of water.  No less than six plainclothes ABC agents surrounded Elizabeth Daly and two of her sorority sisters in a shopping mall parking lot, according to the Daily Progress. One officer drew his gun and allegedly tried to break a window of the SUV as the panicked girls sat inside. According to the legal filing, at least one officer jumped onto the hook of the vehicle, as well. The college students were understandably afraid and thought they were being attacked by criminals.  The young woman was ultimately arrested on three felony charges. The counts levied against her included eluding police and assaulting law enforcement officers. She spent nearly 24 hours in jail.”
