California’s Lt. Gov. comes out in favor of legalizing marijuana

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/gavinnewsom-screen1.jpg

“California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) came out in favor of fully legalizing marijuana and regulating the drug like alcohol, even though he opposed legalization in 2010.  The story went on to describe how many Californians think of marijuana like a cocktail, and how many affluent professionals even offer it to guests at dinner parties as part of local custom.  It concludes with one final quote from the man widely expected to top the ticket of Democratic challengers to Gov. Jerry Brown in 2014: ‘These laws just don’t make sense anymore. It’s time for politicians to come out of the closet on this.'”

Colorado county bans commercial marijuana operations

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Marijuana-via-AFP1.jpg

“While the state of Colorado recently voted in favor of the ballot initiative Amendment 64, which legalized marijuana, a few counties don’t want the resulting plant growing operations in their backyards.  Douglas County, where a majority of residents voted against Amendment 64, passed a ban on commercial marijuana growing operations to take effect Dec. 27, although private citizens can still have a few plants themselves. Another county, Weld, will likely have the same ban in place in January. ‘That’s a revenue source that we’re not interested in having here,’ Wendy Holmes, a spokesperson for Douglas County, told the paper.”

The Next Seven States To Legalize Pot

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/20121217-pot-map-600-13557733631.jpg

“The Berlin Wall of pot prohibition seems to be crumbling before our eyes.  By fully legalizing marijuana through direct democracy, Colorado and Washington have fundamentally changed the national conversation about cannabis. As many as 58 percent of Americans now believe marijuana should be legal. And our political establishment is catching on. Encouraged by the example of Colorado and Oregon, states across the country are debating the merits of treating marijuana less like crystal meth and more like Jim Beam. Here are the next seven states most likely to legalize it.”

Oakland Insists It Can Defend Medical Pot Club

“The city of Oakland renewed demands to stay forfeiture proceedings against a local medical marijuana dispensary whose business it defends as a matter of state’s rights.  Though the U.S. government says that Oakland lacks standing to try to block it from seizing Harborside Health Center, the city argued that it has an interest in protecting its economic and public health interests, and it says a stay would serve the orderly adjudication of justice.  The U.S. government initiated forfeiture proceedings against Harborside Health Center’s Oakland and San Jose locations in July, claiming the clubs sell marijuana in violation of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).”

Anthony Gregory: States Thumb Their Noses at the Drug War

“Since California legalized medical pot in 1996, drug policy developments have put the lie to the federal government’s reputation as a bulwark of civil liberties, humanitarian rights, and rational policy. Whether Colorado and Washington outright defy the federal government—as the medical marijuana states have done—or Obama is forced to concede this ground, it is an embarrassment for national supremacy, the administration, and the DEA, and a triumph for the doctrine of nullification.”

Belgium rejects France’s push to tax French citizens living in Belgium

“Today the Belgian foreign minister gave an interview to the centre-right newspaper Le Figaro, where critics of the socialist president François Hollande are made to feel comfortable.  On the French government’s desire to renegotiate tax collection between the two governments, the gentlest possible No Way: ‘We’re ready to examine many things, as long as the superior principle of free circulation of people, goods and services within the EU is respected. But if this is about recognizing some French power to tax people who live in Belgium, that’s a whole other matter. Every European country must accept that its citizens decide to live elsewhere.'”

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/edit-1133670911.jpg

“The Michigan House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill today that would prevent any state cooperation with federal agents attempting to detain people without due process in Michigan, The Tenth Amendment Center reports.  Carl Mayer, a lawyer for the group of journalists and activists suing over the indefinite detention provisions of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), told BI that the vote is ‘the most important development in this fight since Judge Forrest issued her permanent injunction‘ on section 1021 of the NDAA.”

Is America Too Big?

“Is America too big for democracy? Too big for its traditional republican form? What does it mean if the answer is yes? This video series proposes that the source of our biggest social and political problems is our SIZE.  Like the, obese, 600 pound man who experiences heart failure, diabetes, and dozens of other ailments, so too does America, only its diseases go by the names Debt, War, Entitlements, Gridlock, and Corruption. Our problems cannot be fixed through any change in ideology or bi-partisan agreement in Congress, because those are not the root of our problems. The source is our size.”
