“We choose debt. . .”

“‘We choose both!’  Given the thunderous applause at that remark, everyone seemed to agree that the wealthiest, most prosperous nation in the world should never have to make a single tough financial decision.  Americans should have everything they want. And somehow, the money to pay for it all will just magically appear.”

While feds double down on marijuana prohibition, businesses stop bothering

“AutoNation may represent the first wave of a coming trend as marijuana becomes more socially acceptable and companies vie for workers in the tightest labor market in 17 years.  As more states legalize — Vermont will do so in July — more employees are testing positive on drug tests, according to a Quest Diagnostics report released last year. Positive tests for marijuana rose about 75 percent from 2013 to 2016, the study showed. Results were based on more than 10 million drug tests.”

How Uncle Sam Launders Marijuana Money

“The IRS accepts this tainted money in the payment of taxes, turning it into ‘clean’ money; and it is not an unwitting accomplice to the crime. Estimates are that marijuana business owners across the U.S. will owe $2.8 billion in taxes to the federal government in 2018. The government makes a massive profit off the deal, snatching up to 70 percent of the proceeds of the reporting businesses, as opposed to the more typical rate of 30 percent. It does this by branding marijuana businesses criminal enterprises, which are not entitled to deduct their costs when reporting their income.”

Pot Grower Demands Speedy Trial, Is Imprisoned For 6 Years Without Trial

“During his nearly seven-year pretrial incarceration, Tigano loudly and repeatedly invoked his Sixth Amendment right to a speedy trial. Because Tigano kept bringing up the Sixth Amendment, he was forced to undergo three separate court-ordered examinations to determine whether he was competent to be tried.”

Student Expelled After Investigation By Cop Who Was Dating His Girlfriend

“Friends of the accuser, Jennifer Schoewe, even claimed she exchanged messages with the detective in which they proclaimed their love for each other. But Richey deleted his texts before officials could see them, and Schoewe refused to unlock her phone.  Now Gischel is suing Richey, the university, and the administrators who expelled him. Last week he won an important victory: Southern District of Ohio Judge Susan Dlott ruled that three aspects of his complaint should survive the university’s motion to dismiss.”

Robert Mueller’s forgotten surveillance crime spree

“Most of the subsequent press coverage has shown nary a doubt about Mueller’s purity. But, during his 11 years as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Mueller’s agency routinely violated federal law and the Bill of Rights.”

Ford files patent for an autonomous police car that can ticket you

“The robot cop — but not RoboCop — can determine when a violation has occurred on the road, and it can take various actions.  It can refer the case to a local speed camera or another connected sensor for corroborating evidence. It could also begin a pursuit of the vehicle in question, or if it’s something simple like a warning or a speeding ticket, it can just wirelessly communicate the violation directly to the offending vehicle, which can respond with an image of the driver’s license to ensure the ticket reaches the right person.”

ICE and Border Patrol May Be Trump’s Worst Legacy

“It’s a felony to leave water for thirsty people?  Meanwhile, ICE has run wild. They are busting parents while their kids are at school. They’re publicizing ‘sweeps’ in cities like they’re chasing down Capone or someone. And there’s a very good possibility that, in the so-called ‘sanctuary cities,’ we will see confrontations between ICE agents and local law enforcement. And now we have this latest insanity, whereby technology will be handed to an agency sliding swiftly toward a very dangerous point.”

We May Finally See the End of Compulsory Public-Sector Union Dues

“When they insist government employee wages would plummet in the absence of a union, they’re simply confirming the workers are already earning more than their labors are actually worth on the open market. These are the kinds of hard economic truths that will be exposed when Janus is finally heard next month and the injustices that will be righted if the court this summer votes to ban mandatory dues and fees in the public sector.”
