Want a House? Be Rich and Pay Cash

Mortgages are much tougher to get these days, requiring higher down payments, more expensive mortgage insurance, lower overall debt levels, and more.  Excessive student loan debt and lingering psychological damage from the last housing bust are deterring first-time buyers.  All-cash-investor-locusts swarmed over the market the past couple of years to buy up property and rent it out.  That has helped drive double-digit price increases in many markets. Unfortunately, wage increases, salary hikes, and population and economic growth haven’t kept pace.  As investors turn from buyers into sellers again, it will put the kibosh on the way-too-fast price increases we’ve been seeing.”

Sky’s the limit: New towers targeting rich Asians soar in New York

“These mansion-size apartments with 30-mile views will go unoccupied much or most of the time. These towers are shaped by their clientele: a transnational nouveau riche looking for a second (or third or fourth) home. Having made fortunes in nations less regulated economically and less stable politically than the USA, these buyers want a safe investment as much as, or more than, shelter.  Could this boom be a bubble? Richard Wallgren, 432 Park’s marketing director, says that it’s hard to overbuild in Manhattan.  One57 says that more than half of its buyers come from outside the USA, including 15% from China.  One57 will receive tens of millions in tax breaks to encourage construction.”

Tibetan mastiff twins sell for record-breaking $3 million in China

“A Chinese dog breeder said Thursday that a property developer paid him 18 million yuan  for Tibetan mastiff twins, highlighting how the breed has become a status symbol for China‘s rich.  The large, slobbery dog with massive amounts of hair used to be best known for herding sheep in Tibet, but has now become a luxury for the ultra-rich who want to spread their wealth beyond stocks and real estate.  Zhang said the buyer, from eastern Shandong province, paid him the 18 million yuan with his credit card.  Liu Na, organizer of a Tibetan mastiff fair, said the average price for one of the dogs is several hundreds of thousands of dollars:  ‘It’s just like deals done when buying antiques.'”

As Predicted, Stocks Make New Highs

Anthony-Wile1

“The US stock market goes up. The US borrows and borrows and the Fed continues to print, along with every other major central bank in the world. The BIS presides over the greatest fraud since, well … the last great recovery that traveled from 2002 to 2008. That one ended badly, as well. But not until many became rich and some – those who were able to gauge the market’s arc – managed to keep all or part of their gains. It is indeed a fantasy … and a fraud … but it is also a reality unfolding before our unbelieving eyes. We are wafted upwards on the wings of fiat money printing. Our destination, like Icarus’s, is the sun.”

Don’t Keep Your Gold and Silver in the US, Says Marc Faber

“‘My view would be that we have already printed so much money, and to accelerate it will be bringing about numerous other problems, so my time frame is that the [bubble], maximum, will burst in three years’ time.’ [..] ‘I don’t think that anything is very cheap, but if I have to compare different asset prices, say real estate, stocks, bonds, commodities, gold, art, and so forth—and old cars—then I think that gold and silver [are] relatively inexpensive because they have had big corrections already, and you should not forget that the global bond market now is over $100 trillion.'”

Bitcoins Buy a $500,000 Villa in Bali

“Bitcoin fans can use the virtual currency to buy a Subway sandwich in Allentown, Pa., get their teeth cleaned in Los Angeles or find a date on OKCupid.  Now one bitcoin enthusiast has handed over more than 800 bitcoins to buy a two-bedroom luxury villa in Bali, Indonesia.  The sale took place on Feb. 19 via BitPremier, a website that calls itself ‘the bitcoin luxury marketplace.’ Sellers list properties and other goods on the site, which prices them in bitcoins as well as traditional currencies. When an item sells, the site takes a 5% commission, paid in bitcoins.  The villa’s buyer is an ‘early bitcoin adopter’ who has chosen to remain anonymous, said Alan Silbert, chief executive of BitPremier.”

Bill Bonner: Why the Crowd Is About to Get Destroyed in US Stocks

Bill-Bonner2

“In the US, as in Japan, QE does not help stimulate a real recovery. But it does help simulate one.  House prices are up (thanks, in part, to ultra-low mortgage rates). The middle class has more ‘wealth’ (albeit the paper kind) due to gains in their stock market portfolios. The rich are feeling fat and sassy, too.  The Fed can continue modest tapering. But this is likely to produce a selloff in the stock market. Then the Fed will stop tapering. But it will be too late to reverse the damage to equities. They will go down for many years… bringing us even closer to the Japanese model.  Our guess now is that this situation will persist for a few years.”

Unlocked iPhones Are Hard Currency in Brazil, Italy, Other Countries

“Lining up inside the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue, I was surrounded by shoppers speaking languages from around the world. The salesman looked stunned when I said I wanted an unlocked iPhone. Just one?  A new shipment of unlocked 5s phones had just come in, he said, adding that the gold model I asked for was the most popular in Europe and the easiest to resell. To my right, a man with a credit card from a Saudi bank was trying to buy his third and fourth phones of the day. ‘Make it two,’ I said. There was one more step: The salesman grabbed a landline from behind the counter to connect me with my bank’s antifraud department. Purchases from this store, he said, are red flags.”

Twin gets life for killing man to steal his Magic cards worth $100K

“William Cormier III, a Florida man, was convicted of first-degree murder Thursday and sentenced to life in prison without parole for beating a former Pensacola newspaper reporter to death with a hammer and burying his body in a concrete-covered pit so he could steal a collection of fantasy role-playing cards worth $100,000.  In the case, prosecutor Bridgette Jernsen said Cormier was so desperate for money that he sold Sean Dugas’ cards to pay for the plastic storage container that became his concrete-encased coffin.  Prosecutors said he stole Dugas’ valuable collection of cards for the game ‘Magic: The Gathering.'”

Florida Yacht Broker: Why Bitcoin Is Better Than Credit Cards

“‘I’m on a boat!’ The last time you yelled that out was probably in your dreams.  It’s true that booking a yacht for a charter cruise can take some serious cash — or bitcoin, the virtual currency that’s making waves in finance.  The Advantaged Yacht Charters and Sales in Miami Beach booked its first boat charter last Sunday in bitcoin.  Last weekend, co-owner Jessica Londono attended the North American Bitcoin Conference in Miami, where the deal was sparked. ‘At the conference, the owner of BitPay, Tony Gallippi, made a shoutout that there were local businesses accepting bitcoin during his talk,’ she says.  A man in the room, now her client, searched her company name online and contacted her.”
