Seattle’s Minimum Wage Killed the ‘Five-Dollar Footlong’

“Sadly, the consequences of high minimum wages, excessive taxation, and mandate-happy public policy are not limited to the death of cheap sandwiches. The cost of doing business in Seattle is higher than the Space Needle, and the unintended consequences of those policies are piling up too.  Seattle’s city government might claim that it’s looking out for workers’ best interests by mandating higher wages and other benefits. But if the cost of doing business continues to climb, workers will be hurt, not helped. The end of the five-dollar footlong is likely only the beginning.”

Move Over Ambulances, Uber’s Coming

“The Affordable Care Act slowed ambulance response times by almost 20 percent.  According to a new working paper by David J. G. Slusky of the University of Kansas and Leon S. Moskatel of Scripps Mercy Hospital, some people are foregoing ambulances and opting for ride-hailing services instead.”

Health Care Just Became the U.S.’s Largest Employer

“Recently, the growth in health-care employment is stemming more from administrative jobs than physician jobs. The number of non-doctor workers in the health industry has exploded in the last two decades. The majority of these jobs aren’t clinical roles, like registered nurses. They are mostly administrative and management jobs, including receptionists and office clerks. It’s not always clear that these workers improve health outcomes for patients.”

How Immigration Crackdowns Screw Up Americans’ Lives

“Although the U.S. has been illegally deporting citizens for over a century, the number started soaring when Congress eliminated the right to judicial review for criminal aliens in the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act. The idea was to remove the barriers to ejecting immigrants who posed a danger to Americans. But the result was a general weakening of legal protections and the rise of an unaccountable immigration bureaucracy that itself has become a danger to Americans.”

After three mistrials, judge dismisses case against Cliven Bundy and sons

“A federal judge ruled Monday that the federal government may not retry Cliven Bundy and his sons after rebuking prosecutors for withholding evidence during their felony trial stemming from an armed standoff four years ago.  She said the attorneys were in violation of the Brady rule, which requires prosecutors to disclose evidence that could be favorable to a defendant, and told them it wasn’t possible to proceed with the case.  On Monday, she dismissed the case ‘with prejudice,’ meaning the government cannot retry the defendants.”

Thousands of Americans’ Electronics Illegally Searched at Border

“Over 30,000 people had their electronic devices searched without probable cause or a warrant by Customs and Border Protection in 2017. This is a 50% increase from 2016.  Most of the searches took place at airports when travelers were leaving the country.  Imagine the helplessness of having your phone taken by an Agent, and searched without your consent. No suspicion of any crime. No probable cause. Just some thug using brute force to violate your privacy.  In these settings, travelers are powerless. You just want to get home or continue to your destination, but the American police state shakes you down.  Hundreds of traveler complaints about such oppression have now surfaced thanks to a Freedom of Information Request.

Cliven Bundy-FBI debacle: Another example of why Feds need to be leashed

“Judge Navarro slammed the FBI for withholding key evidence.  Unfortunately, this seems to be standard procedure for the FBI — including in their investigations of both the Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton presidential campaigns as well as the Las Vegas shooter who slaughtered concert goers last October. FBI officials have also been caught routinely twisting the truth to burnish prosecutions. False FBI trial testimony may have helped sentence 32 innocent people to death, as the Washington Post reported in 2015. How many other innocent people have been put behind bars because of federal misconduct?”

Bitcoin Adoption Rate In Iran Surges Despite Censorship And Protests

“The government has blocked popular messaging services like Telegram and Signal, in addition to several internet networks. Yet despite censorship and civil unrest, the Iranian bitcoin community is growing rapidly.  Iranian customers protested outside local branches in 2017, demanding deposits because they worry some of the country’s largest credit institutions are on the verge of collapse. Meanwhile, Iranians remain politically ostracized from most international businesses and financial institutions.  Part of the inspiration behind the Iranian revolution in 1979 was a belief that the Shah’s regime perpetuated economic inequality.”

Exposed: Corrupt Bureau of Land Management Tried to Railroad Cliven Bundy

“The third trial of Cliven Bundy has ended in a mistrial. The prosecution failed to turn over documents that would have helped the defense.  Two earlier trials ended in hung juries. On January 8th, a judge will decide if the case will be dismissed ‘with prejudice,’ meaning that it cannot be once again brought to trial.  It is beginning to look like this is yet another case of government harassment. The prosecution is supposed to turn over all evidence that might help the defense, yet they failed to do so.  A memo from a BLM investigator became public on December 15th, exposing the vast misconduct.”

Europe’s lost generation: Young, educated and unemployed

“Youth unemployment in the eurozone has been stuck between 19% to 25% for the past eight years. In Spain and Greece, it’s north of 40%.  The bleak numbers underscore the uphill battle many young Europeans face in finding jobs that match their aspirations and education.  Legions of young people have grown frustrated. Many are still living at home, while others have left their families and moved to new countries in search of work.”
