Trump slaps tariffs on foreign solar panels and washing machines

“The announcement marks President Trump’s first major trade action of 2018 and follows his campaign promise to get tough on America’s trading partners.  A tariff, or tax, of 30% will be applied to imported solar panels, most of which come from China. Tariffs will begin at 20% on large residential washing machines, according to the announcement Monday from U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.”

ICE mass arrests target Polish doctor after 40 years in the US

“Lukasz Niec was 5 years old when his parents brought him and his sister to the United States from Poland. With two suitcases in tow, his parents — both doctors — left behind a country on the verge of social turmoil. It was 1979, about two years before the country’s authoritarian communist government declared martial law.  Niec, now 43, never fathomed that his legal status in the United States would become an issue.”

Give Haircuts To Homeless Veterans, Receive Threats From Licensing Board

“A cosmetology license requires ’25 weeks [of training], more than an EMT, certified nursing assistant or truck driver.’  Ducey views the cosmetology board as ‘bullies’ and is urging the passage of Ugenti-Rita’s bill, which would make it easier to obtain a license.”

Do You Live in One of These States That People are Fleeing?

In an age of e-commerce, the ‘Quill rule’ is more vital than ever

“There are now 12,000 taxing jurisdictions — not only states, counties, and cities, but also parishes, police districts, and Indian reservations. A lone online seller, unprotected by the Quill rule, could be obliged to remit taxes to any combination of them, with all their multitudinous rules and definitions, tax holidays and filing deadlines.  E-commerce giants like Apple and Amazon may be able to absorb the enormous costs of setting up and operating multistate tax-collection and remittance systems. For local retailers, internet startups, and small ‘brick-and-click’ vendors with a shop on Main Street and a simple website, those costs could be ruinous.”

Ridiculous licensing rules are holding back people who want to work

“Occupational licensing is corrupt and idiotic. It’s idiotic because no one needs a license to braid hair, arrange flowers, or do interior decorating, or 300 hours of training to shampoo hair, all real examples of occupations subject to licensure. And it’s corrupt because although it’s couched in language about protecting the consumer, it’s actually about fleecing consumers and protecting existing players from competition via government power.”

Feds’ misconduct in Cliven Bundy case stems from Ruby Ridge

“Many of the heavily-armed activists who flocked to the scene feared that the FBI snipers had a license to kill the Bundys. Their reaction cannot be understood without considering a landmark 1990s case that continues to shape millions of Americans’ attitude towards Washington: the federal killings and coverups at Ruby Ridge.”

Owner of ‘Obama Gas Station’ faces tax evasion charges

“The South Carolina Department of Revenue said Alhanik filed $971,935 in sales tax returns in the period between 2013 and 2016, but after an investigation the agency found the store’s sales was $2.6 million, according to a press release.  Alhanik dodged paying more than $136,000 in sales taxes during that four-year period, the department said.”

DC Mandates College Degrees For Daycare Workers

“‘Outrageous and tone deaf.’ ‘Madness.’ ‘Completely counterproductive and wrong-headed.’  And that’s just within the first few of more than 400 pages of comments submitted by residents of Washington, D.C., a city where child care costs are already some of the highest in the country, in response to an onerous new licensing requirement for daycare workers. The Office of the State Superintendent for Education (OSSE), which regulates daycares and early childhood education programs in the nation’s capital, last year passed a rule requiring all daycare workers to have a college degree by 2020.”
