NFL teams paid off by military to honor soldiers

“The New York Jets and other NFL teams have reportedly accepted $5.4 million from the Department of Defense to stage game-day ceremonies honoring soldiers that are little more than publicity stunts.  The Jets accepted payments totaling $377,000 from 2011 to 2014 for the phony salutes, and millions more were shelled out to 11 other NFL franchises, according to New Jersey’s Star-Ledger.  The Pentagon’s taxpayer bucks to the Jets buy a ‘Hometown Hero’ segment, where a soldier or two is shown on the big screen. Their names are blared through the stadium as the crowd is asked to thank them for their service.”

Seymour Hersh defends his blockbuster bin Laden story

“It was the kind of question he has heard a wearying number of times over the course of a storied career. The veracity of his own reporting was a topic that seemed only to exasperate him.  ‘You’re talking about someone who was a freelance reporter in 1969 and wrote about massacring hundreds of people in Vietnam for an anti-war news agency,’ Hersh said. ‘My God, you don’t think I had trouble then?’  He’s irritated at what he sees as a public obsession with where and how his bin Laden report had been published. ‘It’s not a press story — it’s a story about what the government does,’ Hersh said. ‘If the questions are about the press, I can’t help you.'”

U.S. officials fuming over Hersh account of Osama bin Laden raid

“The firestorm of criticism has been immediate and unforgiving, from the White House to the Pentagon to the CIA.  The publication Sunday of a 10,000-word article questioning the official version of the 2011 raid that killed Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden might have received scant attention had it it not been penned by Seymour Hersh.  The award-winning reporter, 78, who uncovered one of the worst war crimes by U.S. troops during the Vietnam War and disclosed the torture of inmates at the U.S military-run Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq in 2004, is now questioning the entire national security bureaucracy in one fell swoop. And its members are taking it personally.”

Special forces set to swarm US Southwest and operate among civilians

“Seven Southwestern states will soon be infiltrated by 1,200 military special ops personnel as part of a controversial domestic military training in which some of the elite soldiers will operate undetected among civilians.  Operation Jade Helm begins in July and will last for eight weeks. Soldiers will operate in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah and Colorado where some of them wil drop from planes while carrying weapons loaded with blanks in what military officials have dubbed Realistic Military Training.  But with residents of the entire states of Texas and Utah dubbed ‘hostile’ for the purposes of the exercises, Jade Helm has some concerned the drills are too realistic.”

FBI-baiter Barrett Brown gets five years in prison plus $890,000 fine

“Barrett Brown is going to be spending a little longer inside than he thought after a Dallas judge threw the book at him on charges related to the hacking attack on private US intelligence firm Stratfor.  He got five years and three months for aiding and abetting, attempting to hide evidence, and threatening a Federal officer, and will have to pay a fine of $890,000, most of which will go to Stratfor.  Brown came to prominence in 2011 as a journalist with a close relationship to some members of the hacking group Anonymous. He set up the Project PM wiki to analyze leaked information from events like the HBGary hack and appeared on the media as a self-declared Anonymous spokesperson.”
