“NATO, which I believe should have been shut down after the Cold War ended, is also getting its own massively expensive upgrade. The Alliance commissioned a new headquarters building in Brussels, Belgium, in 2010, which is supposed to be completed in 2016. The building looks like a hideous claw, and the final cost – if it is ever finished – will be well over one billion dollars. That is more than twice what was originally budgeted. What a boondoggle! Is it any surprise that NATO bureaucrats and generals continuously try to terrify us with tales of the new Russian threat? They need to justify their expansion plans!  So who is the real enemy? The Russians?  No, the real enemy is the taxpayer.”

Senate Report Highlights Cars Vulnerable to DARPA-Funded Hackers

Defense Bill Gives Sacred Native American Sites To Mining Company

“The U.S. Senate passed a measure authorizing the nation’s defense programs Friday, and along with it managed to give lands sacred to Native Americans to a foreign company that owns a uranium mine with Iran.  The $585 billion National Defense Authorization Act of 2015 is one of the must-pass pieces of legislation that Congress moves every year. But like they did in attaching extraneous riders to the must-pass government funding bill, lawmakers used the defense bill as a vehicle to pass a massive public lands package.  The deal gives a subsidiary of the Australian-English mining firm Rio Tinto 2,400 acres of the Tonto National Forest so it can mine a massive copper deposit.”

“James Elmer Mitchell and John Bruce Jessen are not the first Americans to employ  waterboarding and other ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ against our enemies.  But they are almost certainly the only ones to get rich doing it.  They did so by employing what is widely dismissed as ‘voodoo science’ based on misapplied principles in a program that CIA records suggest produced little, if any, intelligence of significant value.  And they might have gotten even richer. The Senate Intelligence Committee report says they secured a contract with the CIA in 2006 valued ‘in excess of $180 million.’  The CIA canceled the deal three years later, but by then the duo had received $81 million.”

US Navy’s first laser weapon cleared for combat, blows up boat and plane

“Earlier in the year, the US Navy deployed its first combat-ready laser weapon system in the Persian Gulf — and now, after some field testing, we have a glorious video of the laser being used to blow up (unmanned) boats and drones. I’m happy to report that laser weapons are as awesome as you may have hoped — even if they don’t look quite like the beam weapons from Star Wars or Star Trek.  Laser weapons can be fired very quickly, and the cost per shot is very low (something like $1, as opposed to thousands of dollars for a small missile).  The Office of Naval Research (ONR) is already looking at developing a 150-kilowatt laser system, for testing in 2016 or 2017.”

Bill to Restrict N.S.A. Spying Blocked By Senate Republicans

“Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked a sweeping overhaul of the once-secret National Security Agency program that collects records of Americans’ phone calls in bulk.  Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, worked hard to defeat the bill, which had the support of the Obama administration and a coalition of technology companies including Apple, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo.  ‘This is the worst possible time to be tying our hands behind our backs,’ Mr. McConnell said before the vote, expressing the concerns of those who argued that the program was a vital tool in the fight against terrorism.”

But according to the SASC report, many contractors are unsure about what cyberintrusions to report, and to whom. That is, each contractor could have a separate ‘stove pipe’ reporting chain, with different rules about who gets a report, and under what circumstances. As U.S. contractors get hacked, it’s becoming crystal clear that the Chinese military is highly proficient and professional in its approach to cyberintrusion.”

9/11 Commission Chair: Declassify EVERYTHING

“9/11 Commission chairman Thomas Keane has previously called for the declassification of the secret 28 pages of the Congressional 9/11 Inquiry, and said that 60-70% of what was classified shouldn’t have been classified in the first place. The 9/11 Commissioners publicly expressed anger at cover ups and obstructions of justice by the government into a real 9/11 investigation. No wonder the Co-Chair of the congressional investigation into 9/11 – Bob Graham –  and 9/11 Commissioner and former Senator Bob Kerrey are calling for either a ‘permanent 9/11 commission‘ or a new 9/11 investigation to get to the bottom of it.”

U.S. Navy caught spying on whole state of Washington

“A child pornography case in Washington has shockingly escalated as an appeals court determined the U.S. Navy has been engaged in a ‘routine’ and ‘widespread’ program of ‘hacking’ into private citizens’ computers and turning over information to law enforcement agencies.  A Naval Criminal Investigative Service, or NCIS, agent in Georgia named Steve Logan trolled for traces of child pornography on computers across Washington State. The judges ruled Logan’s action a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the military from enforcing civilian laws, and warned greater action needs to be taken to stop the NCIS from continuing the practice.”
