Mind-controlled prosthetic arm from Segway inventor gets FDA approval

“The prosthetic device comes from a company founded by Segway inventor Dean Kamen, and it is roughly the size and weight of an adult arm.  The arm is controlled by electromyogram electrodes placed on the remaining portion of the human arm. Those sensors pick up electric signals from muscle movements in the upper arm, and a computer in the robotic arm can tell what type of maneuver the user wants to make. The results are impressive: with the arm, amputees in clinical trials were able to perform tasks once thought impossible for a prosthetic limb. They could use zippers and keys, and they could pick up objects like grapes and eggs without crushing them.”

Elon Musk Might Not Be Too Unhappy About Russia’s Space Station Ban

“One person unlikely to be worried about the bans is Elon Musk, who recently said ULA – a partnership of Lockheed Martin and Boeing – has an unfair monopoly on U.S. Air Force rocket launches and could save the Air Force $1bn if the process was opened up to privateers.  Musk’s space venture SpaceX is also pursuing the possibility of private human transport to low orbit using its Dragon spacecraft.  Currently, the US pays Russia $60m per person to fly astronauts to the ISS, according to the UK Telegraph.  Rogozin claimed Russia could still use the ISS for its own purposes.  ‘The Russian segment can exist independently from the American one,’ he said.  ‘The US one cannot.'”

US Defense Dept. analyzing Bitcoin as potential terrorism threat

“The US Defense Department is conducting a counterterrorism program investigation of virtual currencies like Bitcoin and other new technologies, including smartphones and social media, to better understand if they pose security threats.  Run by the Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office (CTTSO), a division of the Pentagon that analyzes terrorism and irregular warfare capabilities, the program recently ended its open call for vendors that could help the US military understand the technologies and any threats they could potentially pose, the International Business Times reported.”

Phoenix VA officials put on leave after denial of secret wait list

“The director of the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care system and two others have been placed on administrative leave amid claims of a secret waiting list and claims that 40-plus veterans died waiting for care.  The announcement Thursday by U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki came a day after officials at the Phoenix VA denied in interviews with CNN the existence of such a list, only to be called liars hours later by the top VA physician who first appeared on CNN and brought the allegations to light.  The sources said more than 1,400 veterans were placed on the purported secret list and that documents were shredded to hide the evidence.”

The Air Force has gone to greater lengths to conceal the mishap than to locate the bomb and secure it.”
