The States Where Buying Stuff With Bitcoin Is The Most Popular

“Here’s the states with the most Bitcoin transactions (on Overstock) per capita: New Hampshire; Utah (where Overstock.com is based); Oregon; Vermont; Washington.  Of course, this is just the beginning so there aren’t tons of transactions yet, and it’s just on one site (albeit a mass market one). But it’s not surprising that the state whose motto is Live Free Or Die is the most into the currency.”

Bitcoin digital currency appearing in New Orleans small businesses

“At David’s Antiques on Royal Street in the French Quarter, the owners revel in the irony of running a store that sells old-fashioned relics using one of the most newfangled technologies to take payments, the digital currency Bitcoin. The 60-year-old shop began accepting Bitcoin, a subject of much recent media attention, in April, making David’s one of few small businesses in New Orleans participating so far.  Another early New Orleans Bitcoin adopter is the Bywater restaurant Booty’s Street Food, an eatery based on co-owner Nick Vivion’s experiences as a travel journalist tasting food from street stalls around the world.”

Bitcoin creeping into Pittsburgh

“Fukuda, a Japanese restaurant in Bloomfield, on Wednesday proudly posted a message to its Facebook and Twitter followers: ‘Ladies and gentlemen, Fukuda has officially accepted bitcoin as payment for Omakase this evening.’  Omakase, for the uninitiated, is a ‘chef’s tasting menu’ offered by the sushi restaurant, said owner Hoon Kim.  Mr. Kim, 38, opened Fukuda in the fall of 2012, and three weeks ago, his restaurant created a bitcoin wallet and announced it was open for bitcoin business.  ‘I’m always interested in being at the forefront of technology,’ Mr. Kim said.”

A Toy-Hungry Multimillionaire Market That’s Completely Underserved

“Multimillionaire geeks with bitcoin are human beings and have just as diverse fields of interest as any other human beings – if anything, they tend to be more diverse than the average person, easily to the point of eccentricity. There is a tremendous first-mover advantage here waiting to happen. If a market broker-portal like Ebay were to start processing payments in bitcoin, then that would be it – they would own this market, being able to serve the most odd and off-trail requests. But we’re not at that point. There are multimillionaires out there who want to buy your stuff, in the US, EU, and elsewhere, and they are asking you to accept their money.”

Overstock.com First to Pass $1 Million in Bitcoin Payments

“More then 3 weeks ago, Overstock.com made big headlines for being the first Billion dollar online retailer to Accept Bitcoin as a payment method. They have since then processed more than $1 Million worth of Bitcoin payments, Which is a big slap in the face of their direct competitor Amazon.  That opens up the question: When will Amazon start accepting Bitcoin? As of now, they refuse to make any claims about accepting the digital currency, which is strange because they are usually on top of the game if it comes to customer care. These numbers don’t lie, and they must know that Overstock is stealing their market share in terms of Bitcoin payments.”

Alcatel-Lucent files Patent for Vault to Wallet Transfer System

Alcatel-Lucent filed for Patent Application WO2013127713 A1 ‘Decentralized Electronic Transfer System’ with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).  The essence of the patent is a system whereby a decentralized currency such as Bitcoin is stored in a secure environment known as a Vault (i.e. secured repository) and a smaller unsecured portion of funds are stored in an unsecured Wallet (i.e. unsecure repository).  An unsecured wallet would be on a mobile phone for example.  Funds are doled out from the secure vault to the less secure wallet to provide the wallet holder with less cumbersome and frictionless experience when spending bitcoin in day to day transactions.”

Litecoin users create 100 jobs in Madagascar

“Online donors have raised more than $10,000 in Litecoin to employ Madagascan villagers to plant trees.  The move will create more than 100 new jobs in the impoverished country, as well as reforesting the area with more than 100,000 new trees.  The Madagascan mangrove forests are a vital part of the local eco-system, providing support for the local habitat as well as protecting the ground from washing away with the changing tides.  Fundraisers from the Litecoin community, the leading alternative crypto-currency to Bitcoin, came together to support the Eden Projects, a reforestation charity based in Glendora, California.”

Holder: Feds to set rules for banks and pot money

“The Obama administration will soon announce [guidance] to make it easier for banks to do business with legal marijuana sellers, Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday.  ‘You don’t want just huge amounts of cash in these places. They want to be able to use the banking system,’ Holder said during an appearance at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center. ‘There’s a public safety component to this. Huge amounts of cash—substantial amounts of cash just kind of lying around with no place for it to be appropriately deposited is something that would worry me, just from a law enforcement perspective.'”

Washington Pot Entrepreneurs Turn To Cash, Bitcoin

“Although recreational marijuana has been legal in Washington for more than a year, federal law still prohibits banks from dealing with those businesses.  This month the New York Times wrote a front-page feature on marijuana business owners in Seattle paying state taxes with mountains of cash.  Sean Green, himself a marijuana business owner, credits that story with helping push federal officials to act.  In the meantime, Green said his medical marijuana dispensaries are going to accept the digital currency Bitcoin. He concluded that the novel currency would be a good alternative to the options they have now.”
