Michaels retailer probing possible customer data breach

“Michaels Stores says it is investigating a possible company data security breach that may have affected its customers’ payment card information.  The Irving, Tex.-based company said Saturday that it launched the probe after learning of possible fraudulent activity on some U.S. payment cards used at the home decor and crafts retailer.  CEO Chuck Rubin suggests Michaels customers take steps to protect themselves, such as reviewing their account statements for unauthorized charges. Michaels has more than 1,250 locations in the United States.”

Apple to take on PayPal, Square, Isis with its own mobile payments?

“If you have an iPhone 5S, Apple can verify your fingerprint in a flash. The company likely has your credit card on file, and it can theoretically even figure out where you are inside a store with its iBeacon service. So far, the company hasn’t put the puzzle pieces together to let you buy whatever you can see, but that might be changing soon. The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is building its own mobile payments business to take on the likes of PayPal, Google, Square, and Isis.  The publication doesn’t have any details about what the program might entail, only that the company’s careful executive search process suggests strong interest.”

T-Mobile’s Free Money Service, Complete With 42,000 No-Fee ATMs

“T-Mobile isn’t just content being your wireless carrier. It now wants to manage your money, too.  The company announced today Mobile Money, a free money management service available to anyone with a T-Mobile phone number.  It’s not exactly a checking account, but it’s similar. Think of it this way:  With T-Mobile’s Mobile Money, your wireless carrier is your bank. T-Mobile retail stores are your banking branches. T-Mobile retail employees are your tellers. And while it sounds bizarre, it’s just another example of a company trying to remove the banks from banking.”

Why This Technology Is The Future Of Asset Internationalization

“One of bitcoin’s biggest benefits as an option for internationalizing one’s assets is that it exists only as an abstract computer-driven file. This makes the coin exceedingly durable and easy to transport (or recover) anywhere in the world.  In other words, you don’t have to bury a few bitcoins in the backyard, and then dig them up on the offchance you need them, like with gold and silver. Bitcoins are much less bulky than precious metals, a major convenience.  Plus, nobody wants to board plane-after-plane to get a considerable amount of gold out of the US. That bitcoin is not tangible bestows upon it special properties. Special properties that neither gold nor silver demonstrate.”

Creator of Netscape, Marc Andreessen: ‘Why Bitcoin Matters’

“A mysterious new technology emerges, seemingly out of nowhere, but actually the result of two decades of intense research and development by nearly anonymous researchers. Political idealists project visions of liberation and revolution onto it; establishment elites heap contempt and scorn on it.  On the other hand, technologists – nerds – are transfixed by it.  Eventually mainstream products, companies and industries emerge to commercialize it; its effects become profound; and later, many people wonder why its powerful promise wasn’t more obvious. What technology am I talking about? Personal computers in 1975, the Internet in 1993, and – I believe – Bitcoin in 2014.”

Richard Branson on bitcoin: Take that, Mr. Dimon

“Sir Richard Branson says there will be a global currency—whether its bitcoin or something else—that will ‘take on Jamie Dimon and the other banks.’  The billionaire entrepreneur spoke Friday in a CNBC interview from the World Economic Forum a day after JPMorgan CEO Dimon and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew expressed skepticism about the digital currency.  ‘The idea is very exciting. I think having a global currency where you don’t have to spend all the money changing your currencies is admirable and whoever is behind bitcoin was brilliant,’ the Virgin Group founder told ‘Squawk Box‘ in Davos, Switzerland. ‘It was a brilliant first step.'”
