Bitcoin Gets Support From Sberbank CEO as Russia Plans Anti-Terror Law

“Advocates of Bitcoin gained support from OAO Sberbank (SBER) chief Herman Gref, who’s urging the Kremlin to stop Russian lawmakers from curbing the use of virtual currencies in a bill designed to cut funding for terrorists.  The security committee in Russia’s lower house of parliament, the State Duma, approved a draft bill on Jan. 15 that seeks to curb anonymous transactions as a means to counter terrorism.  It’s not clear how Russia will be able to regulate virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, though, since they don’t have issuance or processing centers, according to Viktor Dostov, president of the Russian Electronic Money Association.”

HSBC imposes restrictions on large cash withdrawals

“Some HSBC customers have been prevented from withdrawing large amounts of cash because they could not provide evidence of why they wanted it, the BBC has learnt.  Listeners have told Radio 4’s Money Box they were stopped from withdrawing amounts ranging from £5,000 to £10,000.  HSBC admitted it has not informed customers of the change in policy, which was implemented in November.  The bank says it has now changed its guidance to staff.  Money Box asked other banks what their policy is on large cash withdrawals.  They all said they reserved the right to ask questions about large cash withdrawals.”

Contagion Spreads in Emerging Markets as Crises Grow

“The worst selloff in emerging-market currencies in five years is beginning to reveal the extent of the fallout from the Federal Reserve’s tapering of monetary stimulus, compounded by political and financial instability.  The Turkish lira plunged to a record and South Africa’s rand fell yesterday to a level weaker than 11 per dollar for the first time since 2008. Argentine policy makers devalued the peso, allowing the currency to drop the most in 12 years to an unprecedented low.  While Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa were the engines of global growth following the financial crisis in 2008, emerging markets now pose a threat to world financial stability.”

India IT training school offers Bitcoin course

“An Indian IT training school has hopped on the Bitcoin frenzy and is offering a new course to teach students how to mine the digital currency.  Koenig Solutions introduced a four-day programme that encompasses skillsets and focus areas such as the basics of Bitcoin, Bitcoin mining, secure trading with Bitcoin, and Bitcoin protocol specifications, according to the company’s CEO and founder, Rohit Aggarwal.  The course is currently available at its Delhi training center, and will be offered to its other branches in India and overseas, reported The Times of India.”

Nonetheless, US government officials are taking an extremely cautious approach to Bitcoin due to it being the currency of choice for some in the criminal underworld.”
