Pirate Party Prompts Successful Campaign Finance Ruling for Bitcoin

“The Pirate Party is pleased that the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance (OCPF) ruled that registered political committees can now accept donations in bitcoins.  The OCPF’s advisory opinion was in response to the Massachusetts Pirate Party’s inquiry into the rules governing bitcoin donations to political action committees. The OCPF determined that political committees could accept bitcoin contributions, subject to existing disclosure requirements and contribution limits. Political campaigns would need to convert bitcoins into US dollars within five days of receiving them, just like other financial assets such as stocks and bonds.”

Airbnb might be closer to accepting Bitcoin: CEO requests opinions

“The major home rental service Airbnb might be considering Bitcoin as a payment option. At least, the company’s co-founder and CEO, Brian Chesky, decided to ask his followers’ opinion on Twitter regarding this possibility.  The answer was overall positive, with dozens of people asking the company to take this step forward and become one of the first platforms of its kind to accept the cryptocurrency.  Airbnb is an online platform that lists thousands of houses, apartments and bedrooms available for short-term rental in 34,000 cities across the world. It is especially appropriate for people on vacations who would rather stay in a house than in a hotel.”

Manhattan Newsstand Owner Accepts Bitcoins Instead Of Credit Cards

“We’re still a few weeks (or more) away from the city’s first bitcoin ATM machine, but that doesn’t mean that digital cash isn’t slowly gaining popularity all over the city. If you’ve got some bitcoins burning a hole through your e-wallet, stop your bitchcoining (BOO) and just head over to the newsstand at 34th Street and 2nd Avenue run by lifelong New Yorker Kay, who is the subject of the very impassioned (and quite repetitive) pro-bitcoin video below, made by EasyBlitz. ‘I think it’s riskier dealing with credit card companies than it is with bitcoins,’ Kay said, explaining his devotion to the bitcoin. ‘With credit card companies you have chargebacks, whereas with bitcoin you don’t.'”

EBay considering accepting bitcoin as payment

Ebay is now considering allowing customers to use bitcoin for payment for both eBay and PayPal, sources inside the company told CNBC.  The company hasn’t yet made a decision, and is waiting for the regulatory framework to become clearer before it makes a final call, the sources told CNBC. Next month, eBay US and eBay UK will allow its customers to buy and sell bitcoins for the first time.  A spokesman for eBay said: ‘The growth of alternative currencies like bitcoin have the potential to be disruptive technologies but they are all still in the early stages of development. We’re closely following this area and look forward to seeing how it develops.'”

Neiman Marcus hack hit 1.1 million customers

“About 1.1 million customers were impacted by a breach of luxury retailer Neiman Marcus’ payment systems that lasted more thanthree months, the company said.  Malicious software scooped up customer credit and debit card information between July 16 and Oct. 30 of last year, Neiman Marcus Group President and CEO Karen Katz said in a message on the retailer’s website.  Visa (VFortune 500), MasterCard (MAFortune 500) and Discover (DFSFortune 500) reported 2,400 cards were then used fraudulently, Katz said.  The software — described as ‘sophisticated, self-concealing malware, capable of fraudulently obtaining payment card information’ — has since been disabled.”

HSBC won’t give me more than £1k of my own cash over the counter

“I went to withdraw £10,000 cash from my HSBC account in Swindon which is in credit by about £50,000.  However, HSBC will not let me take out anything over £1,000 cash over the counter. I gave them warning, but they say they must know what I will use it for – they want to see evidence of hotel bookings etc.  In short, they refuse to give me my cash. HSBC say it is new internal rules to help prevent money laundering. But for example, what if I want to buy a £5,000 car? It said I’d have to put down a deposit and show them the receipt first.  I find this outrageous and an invasion of privacy – why do HSBC get to decide what I do with my money?”
