Bitcoin and Poker: Zynga’s Best Friends

“Adding a new method of buying what amounts to little more than different colored pixels on a screen won’t likely add much revenue or bottom line profits, unless of course, the colored pixels are in the shape of poker chips. Last year Zynga added ZyngaPlusCasino and ZyngaPlusPoker to its lineup of games.  As more states bet that online gambling can help solve their budget woes, the opportunity for Zynga increases. The recent addition of New Jersey could prove to be a tipping point for other states looking to cash in.  Bitcoin removes the pesky credit card approval issues for both user and merchant and eliminates credit card fraud and disputed charges.”

Haircuts for a digital dollar? Bitcoin’s small business use

“Cash, credit or…Bitcoin?   Toowoomba barbershop owner Mitch Brownlie is bringing in a cutting-edge method of payment to his businesses – the online currency of Bitcoins.  Mr Brownlie said his interest in the currency had come from the inconvenience of handling cash as a business owner.  ‘You always have to worry about the cash, getting it to the bank. Getting both shops down to the bank, every day, is really inconvenient.  Realistically, people get their wages direct into account, Centrelink directly into their account, why not pay directly from there?’  To pay by Bitcoin, a customer would scan a QR code at the salon with their smart phone.”

SnapCard launches bill-pay, makes the IRS its first payee

“Today, snapCard announced a program to allow US taxpayers to pay the IRS using bitcoin. In a little over a week, this program will be extended to universal bitcoin bill-pay similar to that offered by most large banks, according to one of the company’s two co-founders, Ioannis Giannaros.  Since launching two months ago, San Mateo-based SnapCard has aimed to make it possible to ‘buy anything on the Internet using any virtual currency.’ The company has built a browser bookmarklet that automates bitcoin checkout process on any ecommerce website. Users simply indicate the item they wish to purchase and snapCard handles the checkout and the payment behind the scenes.”

The rise of BitPay [infographic]

“If there’s a company with an evolution that can be compared to Bitcoin and its history, that company is the payment processing platform BitPay.  After surpassing its humble beginnings, BitPay is currently a huge case of success: it has already surpassed $100 million in Bitcoin transactions and has more than 15,500 merchants spread across 200 countries.  The present is amazing, of course, but it’s always worth to remember how the payment processor got here. That is why Bitcoin Examiner has a new infographic to show you and, today, it’s all about BitPay.”

British university accepts course fees in Bitcoin

“The University of Cumbria has become the first public institution of its kind to accept its fees in bitcoins – at least, for two courses that specifically deal with currency innovation.  Located in England’s scenic Lake District, the university counts among its many courses a Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Leadership and a Certificate of Achievement in Sustainable Exchange, both offered through its recently-established Institute for Leadership and Sustainability (IFLAS). For these two courses, it is trialling payment by Bitcoin, via a transaction service such as Bitpay.  A private university in Nicosia, Cyprus, has already said it will accept Bitcoin for everything from course fees to cafeteria meals.”

Cigar Industry Receives Bitcoin Boost

“Australia’s largest premium cigar retailer, Brisbane-based Fine Cigars Australia began accepting the currency.  The company’s general manager, Matthew Mroczek, said he and the company were already comfortable with bitcoin by that stage. ‘We have been using it for several months now to pay some of our suppliers in places like Mexico and Nicaragua because it is simply a far more efficient method of payment,’ he said.  ‘To go through normal banking channels it would take two days for them to get the money, which delayed the delivery to our customers. Not to mention the problem with currency movements over such a time period.'”

Las Vegas casinos adopt new form of currency: Bitcoins

“Who needs poker chips?  There’s a new currency coming to Las Vegas casinos: the Bitcoin.  Starting Wednesday, The D Las Vegas Casino Hotel and Golden Gate Hotel & Casino will begin collecting the digital currency that merchants increasingly are starting to accept.  The two downtown Vegas properties will accept the currency at five locations, including their front desks and the D’s Gift Shop. Guests also can use the currency at the D Hotel’s American Coney Island hot dog shop and Joe Vicari’s Andiamo Italian Steakhouse.  The Bitcoin purchases will be processed through BitPay, which allows merchants to accept Bitcoins just as they would Visa, MasterCard or Paypal.”

Swiss banks devise new ‘cash’ strategies for clients

“As Swiss banks lose their secrecy tag, some bankers here are coming up with innovative ideas to lure rich clients from India and other countries by providing services like ‘cash courier’ as well as by offering large metal vaults to store currency notes, gold, artworks and other valuables.  Also on the platter is advice to put money in virtual currencies, especially in the wake of Bitcoin ATMs becoming operational in Zurich.”

Angry South Koreans flood banks after data leak

“Tens of thousands of South Koreans flooded banks and call centres on Tuesday to cancel their credit cards following the unprecedented theft of the personal data of at least 20 million people.  The panic has its roots in the arrest earlier this month of an employee from personal credit ratings firm Korea Credit Bureau, on charges of stealing and selling data from customers of three credit card firms while working as a temporary consultant.  All special call centres run by the three firms were busy on Tuesday and some of their websites could not be accessed at all.  Dozens of their top executives have tendered their resignations, while the government is expected to announce special measures.”

Merchant processor Bitpay now has more 20,000 separate clients and says that at its current rate of growth it will hit 100,000 by year end.  So, even though bitcoin might not yet have truly earned mainstream status, there’s already a lot you can do with it.”
