Banks Say No to Marijuana Money, Legal or Not

“Banks, including state-chartered ones, are reluctant to provide traditional services to marijuana businesses. They fear that federal regulators and law enforcement authorities might punish them.  The limitations have created unique burdens for legal marijuana business owners. They pay employees with envelopes of cash. They haul Chipotle and Nordstrom bags containing thousands of dollars in $10 and $20 bills to supermarkets to buy money orders. When they are able to open bank accounts — often under false pretenses — many have taken to storing money in Tupperware containers filled with air fresheners to mask the smell of marijuana.”

Philadelphia Brewing Company Accepting Bitcoin As Payment

“Now Philly beer nerds who prefer to exist outside the traditional banking system can rejoice because Philadelphia Brewing Company has just announced that they’re going to be the first United States brewery to accept bitcoin as payment for both wholesale and retail purchases.  There’s also the idea of streamlining their wholesale operations (previously, drivers could only accept payment by checks, which then had to be brought back to the office and processed manually) and making it cheaper to process retail sales. So, you know, if you happen to have a bunch of crypto-currency burning a hole in your virtual wallet, now you can go buy some beer and bottle openers with it.”

Private Jet Service PrivateFly Now Accepts Bitcoin

“Private jet booking service PrivateFly.com is now accepting payment in bitcoin.  The company, which was founded in 2007, will accept bitcoins via popular payment   processor BitPay.  Customers can use the company’s online platform, apps and operations team to access a global network of over 7,000 private aircraft, booking charter flights within 90 minutes.  Adam Twidell, co-founder and CEO at PrivateFly, said he has followed bitcoinclosely since the beginning of 2012.  The company specialises in rapid-response flight requests, so Twidell wanted a payment system to match – something that wasn’t subject to the limitations of banking hours and could be used globally.”

Grand Experiment Goes Live: Overstock.com Now Accepting Bitcoins

“Overstock’s free-thinking CEO and chairman, Patrick Byrne, has been telling anyone who would listen that his company would adopt bitcoin sometime in the next six months. But Byrne is an impatient man. Last Tuesday, the company struck a deal to handle bitcoin payments through a service operated by the suddenly hot San Francisco startup Coinbase, and since then, a team of Overstock engineers has worked almost every waking hour to prepare the site for what is undeniably a key moment in the digital currency’s short history.  ‘I felt I had tipped my hand,’ Byrne says. ‘I didn’t want someone else to beat us.'”

Bitcoin Comes To Overstock After CEO Locks 40 People In A Room

“Last month, Overstock.com, which sells everything from jewelry to couches, announced that it would start accepting Bitcoin by the middle of 2014. CEO Patrick Byrne, 51, said the low-priced site was looking forward to cutting down on transaction fees for purchases given that its net margin is just 2%. The site took the Internet by surprise Thursday by moving its Bitcoin deadline up radically: it’s accepting Bitcoin as of today.  ‘Our first purchase with Bitcoin was a $2700 patio set,’ says Byrne from Salt Lake City, where the company is based. In the first 90 minutes of Bitcoin sales, the site had received about 150 orders.”

Venezuelans blocked from taking flights out by capital controls

“Under Venezuela’s foreign exchange controls, access to dollars is tightly restricted. International airlines serving the country are currently owed up to $2.6 billion in dollars for bolivars that they have turned in to Venezuela’s Cadivi foreign exchange agency.  Air Europa is owed upwards of $160 million, it said. A company director is flying to Caracas on Monday to meet with the country’s foreign exchange agency to discuss the problem, the airline said Friday. The company operates its Madrid-Caracas-Madrid route six times a week.  Most other international airlines are taking other steps to limit their exposure to Venezuelan bolivars, which aren’t convertible outside the country.”
