Court returns rare gold coins Treasury seized from jeweler’s family

“A fortune in 1930s gold coins seized by the federal government from the family of a deceased Philadelphia jeweler must be returned, a federal appeals court said Friday.  For more than a decade, the U.S. Treasury Department insisted, and persuaded a jury, that the rare coins had been stolen and belonged to the government.  But on Friday it lost the argument and the coins – because of paperwork.  The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit said the government had failed to file a timely forfeiture action, and therefore had waived its right to keep 10 rare 1933 $20 double eagle gold coins. How valuable were they? One similar coin was auctioned for $7.6 million in 2002.”

Mom Calls Cops After Discovering Son, 15, Was Watching Porn

“A South Carolina woman yesterday summoned cops to her home after she discovered that her 15-year-old son had been watching pornography on the living room television.  According to a police report, Chavonda Gallman, 40, told sheriff’s deputies that she returned to her Spartanburg home yesterday at 3 PM with her two-year-old daughter and a client (Gallman is a real estate agent). Her son was in his room when the trio arrived.  Upon entering the home, Gallman’s daughter ‘turned on the TV and there was porn on.’ Gallman told investigators that ‘they immediately turned off the TV’ and took the child out of the room.”

Facebook Down: People Call Police in Los Angeles

“If you freaked out about Facebook going down earlier today, we hope your next call wasn’t 911. Sounds obvious, right? Apparently not to everyone, according to these tweets from Sergeant Burton Brink of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.  Add this incident to the list of inappropriate times to call the police – from the British woman who called 999 because the ice cream man didn’t put enough sprinkles on her ice cream to the Florida woman who called 911 because she claimed a restaurant served her undercooked waffles.”

Veteran killed by cop attempting to take his gun for no reason

“Schaefer called 911 about 7:20 a.m. to report that he had shot and killed a pit bull that attacked him, Police Chief Art Acevedo said at a news conference that morning.  Officers asked dispatchers to call Schaefer back and tell him to put his gun in the house before officers arrived. He refused, Acevedo said, and he refused again when officer Jonathan Whitted got to the residence and asked Schaefer to hand over the pistol he saw tucked in his waistband.  When Whitted went to take the gun, Schaefer pulled it out and aimed it at the officer, Acevedo said. Whitted then shot and killed Schaefer.  Two neighbors questioned whether it was wrong for Schaefer to hold onto his gun on his own property.”

Call of Duty loser calls in SWAT team hoax on kid who beat him

“They arrived with guns drawn and ready for war — only to find out the call to cops was an act of revenge by a gamer whom the teen had just beaten in an online Call of Duty battle.  The disgruntled gamer had just been eliminated by Castillo and gave police the teen’s home address in a dangerous game called ‘Swatting,’ and the authorities went into full emergency mode.  In the two-hour standoff, authorities scrambled choppers over the house and rushed in more than 60 officers with weapons drawn — including Nassau County’s special operations unit.  Cops tried for 20 minutes to call Rafael and get him to come out, but he had headphones on and was still glued to his video game console.”

Beaten, Thrown in Solitary After Calling 911 To Help Crashed Bicyclist

“I live in a new gilded age in a golden city. But sometimes the cracks show, even here. The façade crumbles and you find yourself naked, in solitary confinement, in a wretched, feces-stained prison.  How? As a result of my efforts to help injured bicyclists by calling 911, I was, in short order: separated from my friend, violently tackled, arrested, taken to county jail, stripped and left in a solitary cell. I am writing this story because, if it could happen to me, it could happen to you, and I feel the need to do something to help prevent this brutality from propagating.”

Officer Points Gun At Restaurant Patron To Prove He’s A Cop

“Oakland police Officer Kevin Kelly, 24, had been talking to another patron having breakfast at a restaurant there and told her he was a police officer, but she didn’t believe him, Esparza said.  To prove it, Kelly, who had been drinking, allegedly pulled out a handgun, pointed it at the woman and at the restaurant’s ceiling, Esparza said.  The woman told the restaurant’s staff that Kelly had a gun and the police were called. Kelly was arrested and cited for misdemeanor brandishing a firearm, Esparza said. His weapon, which was not department-issued, was booked into evidence, according to Esparza.”

Cops Ordered to Return $1+ Million Seized From Innocent Woman

“In 2012, Tara Mishra decided to invest over one million dollars in a nightclub.  Mishra gave the money to her future business partners, a married couple, to transport from California to New Jersey for her.  The Nebraska state trooper who stopped the pair asked to search the vehicle, and the couple consented. Officers discovered Mishra’s cash in multiple plastic bags stuffed with $100 bills in $10,000 stacks.  The officer, suspecting drug involvement, called in drug-sniffing dogs. Trace amounts of illegal drugs were found on the bills. The officers felt this was enough reason to seize Mishra’s money, even though studies show that up to 90% of U.S. paper money contains traces of cocaine.”

Fed Accused Of Sending Nude Selfie To Woman Who Needed Help

“A federal police officer is under investigation for allegedly sending a nude selfie to a woman who had come to him for help.  ‘It’s scary,’ she said, ‘I mean, this is a police officer.’  The picture is almost a full-length nude. He allegedly sent it to the woman’s cell phone.  ‘It’s shocking,’ she said, ‘No one has ever sent me a nude selfie before. Let alone a police officer who I was going to him for help.'”
