Grand jury indicts police officer who killed unarmed man seeking help

“Less than a week after one grand jury declined to charge him, a different one has indicted a Charlotte, N.C., police officer for voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of an unarmed man who was looking for help after a car crash.  Prosecutors resubmitted the case against Officer Randall Kerrick after learning not all 18 members of the original grand jury were present for last Tuesday’s vote. Kerrick, 28, a three-year veteran of the Charlotte police force, shot Jonathan Ferrell, 24, 10 times in a confrontation in September. Ferrell had crashed his car and staggered for help to a nearby home, where the resident called 911 to report a possible break-in.”

Out-of-control police overreach meets extreme secrecy

“If it seems to you that the police are becoming more violent, you may be right. In 2011, Los Angeles County police shot to death 54 people, some 70 percent more than in 2010. Between 2008 and 2013, the number of people shot by Massachusetts police increased every year. In 2012, police in New York City shot and killed 16 people, nine more the previous year and the most in 12 years. In 2012, Philadelphia police shot 52 people—the highest number in 10 years.  But whether these statistics reflect a national trend is, at this point, an unanswerable question.  That’s because many of the country’s 17,000 police departments don’t release information on use of force by police.”

A Cop’s “Job”: Kill Without Cause or Consequences

“‘What they decided … was that Officer Randall Kerrick did his job,’ summarized his attorney, George Laughrun, after a grand jury in North Carolina refused to indict Kerrick for manslaughter in the death of Jonathan Ferrell. ‘Regretfully, it cost the life of Jonathan Ferrell. But he did his job.’  Some version of this formulaic response is uttered by cops, their superiors, or their attorneys anytime an officer is exonerated after an on-duty killing under dubious circumstances. In this case, the victim, an unarmed 24-year-old man with no criminal record, was shot ten times while he was asking the police for help.”

Retired cop shoots man dead in movie theater over texting argument

“Oulson was fatally wounded. His wife was hit, too, through the hand as she raised her hand in front of her husband as the shooter drew a handgun.  Oulson staggered toward the Cummings and fell on them, Charles Cummings said.  The shooter sat down and put the gun in his lap.  Oulson later died. His wife, Nicole, suffered a non-life threatening wound to her hand.  Reeves retired in 1993 as a captain with the police department in nearby Tampa. He was also director of security at Busch Gardens until 2005, the station reported.”

Anthony Gregory: License to Kill

“No one knows how many times police shoot and kill Americans every year. Most estimates put the number at a few hundred a year, but we don’t know the details, including how many of these killed people presented a real threat to anyone. The U.S. government does not do body counts, as it admitted during the Iraq war. And the same appears to be true in domestic policing, where law enforcement has become comparably brutal to the armed forces overseas, including in what has become standard operating procedure in the hundred SWAT raids performed every day across this country, the vast majority of which are launched to serve warrants to people accused of non-violent offenses.”

For Police, Murder is a Time-Saving Device

“‘We don’t have time for this!’ exclaimed a police officer as he shot and killed a psychologically troubled, 90-pound teenage boy who had already been tasered and was pinned down beneath two other officers. The victim, 18-year-old Keith Vidal, was ‘armed’ with a screwdriver at the time of his death.  Vidal’s father, Mark Wilsey, had called the police for help when the boy suffered what was described as a psychotic episode on the afternoon of January 5. When the police arrived at the family’s home in Boiling Spring Lakes, North Carolina, they rendered the kind of ‘help’ for which they have become so notorious.”

Police kill man, 19, after father calls to stop him from buying cigarettes

“A 19-year-old has been shot dead by police after his father dialed 911 to report his truck stolen in order to teach his son a lesson for driving off to buy cigarettes.  Patrol officer Adam McPherson fired six shots into the truck and the 19-year-old later died from two gunshot wounds. Father James Comstock told The Des Moines Register on Tuesday: ‘He took off with my truck. I call the police, and they kill him. It was over a damn pack of cigarettes. I wouldn’t buy him none.  ‘And I lose my son for that.’  Gary Shepley, Tyler’s step-grandfather, questioned why police didn’t back away from the truck, which belonged to a lawn care company, as suggested by an officer during the chase.”

Trigger-happy cops face pushback after slew of shootings

“The last words Elsa Cruz heard her husband say, in response to police officers banging on his locked front door, were: ‘Don’t knock on my door, it’s against my will.’  She’ll never forget what came next.  ‘I heard, bluh, bluh, bluh, the sound of the tool as they broke the door down. There was silence, then a loud bang.’  The shot hit her husband Samuel, a Puerto Rican artist living in New Rochelle, New York, in the chest and left him dying in a pool of blood in their home.”

Georgia Police Kill Diabetic After Family Calls 911 Requesting Ambulance

“On Friday afternoon, 43-year-old Jack Lamar Roberson was shot to death by Waycross police officers in front of his mother, fiancé and 8-year-old daughter.  Alicia Herron, Roberson’s fiancé and girlfriend of 10 years, says she called 911 to request an ambulance for Roberson out of concern for his diabetic condition. But police arrived at their home instead. Immediately after the shooting, around 100 people gathered in the neighborhood to express outrage at Roberson’s death, describing him as a devoted father, partner and son who never caused any trouble.”
