Bundesbank Floats Wealth Levy Idea for Future Crises

“Germany’s central bank Monday proposed a one-time wealth tax as an option for euro-zone countries facing bankruptcy, reviving a idea that has circled for years in Europe but has so far gained little traction.  ‘The question arises whether in extraordinary national emergencies in addition to privatization and conventional consolidation efforts, private wealth can also contribute to avert a government insolvency,’ the Deutsche Bundesbank said.  The idea of a one-time tax on private wealth isn’t new. Italy has flirted with the idea of a wealth tax over the past three years.  The IMF in October also floated the idea of a one-time ‘capital levy,’ amid a sharp deterioration of public finances in many countries.”

“According to the new document, the FBI obtained the data belonging to Freedom Hosting’s customers through a Mutual Legal Assistance request to France – where the company leased its servers – between July 22, 2013 and August 2 of last year.  The French company also hasn’t been identified. But France’s largest hosting company, OVH, announced on July 29, in the middle of the FBI’s then-secret Freedom Hosting seizure, that it would no longer allow Tor software on its servers. A spokesman for the company says he can’t comment on specific cases, and declined to say whether Freedom Hosting was a customer.”

Treasury Secretary Lew: Jamie Dimon and I share ‘incredulity’ on bitcoin

“Treasury Secretary Jack Lew called bitcoin a ‘phenomenon,’ but told CNBC that the U.S. government needs to make sure the digital currency doesn’t become a funding haven for criminals and terrorists.  At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Lew told ‘Squawk Box‘ he has spoken to JPMorgan Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon about bitcoin, and the two share a certain ‘incredulity’ about it. ‘From the government’s perspective, we have to make sure [bitcoin] does not become avenue to funding illegal activities or to funding activities that have malign purposes like terrorist activities,’ Lew said.  ‘It is an anonymous form of transaction. And it offers places for people to hide.'”

Almost immediately he started talking about Bitcoin.  As a currency he says it’s a return to the dark ages.  Shiller is a student and expert in the nature of bubbles, and he’s adamant that Bitcoin is one. Says Shiller: ‘It is a bubble, there is no question about it. … It’s just an amazing example of a bubble.’  He added that he’s ‘amazed by how people are so excited about it’ and that he tells his students that ‘No, it’s not such a great idea.'”

Air kisses ensued, and seconds later he was back in his chair when a flash of recognition crossed his face.  Around the Congress Centre, the forum’s main hub, world and financial leaders seemed completely unaware at best and extremely skeptical at worst about Bitcoin’s merits.”

Lagarde Warns Officials to Fight Deflation ‘Ogre’ Decisively

“International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde urged policy makers in advanced economies to fight risks of deflation that would threaten a global recovery she called ‘feeble.’  Central banks in the U.S., Japan and the euro area face inflation levels under their targets while trying to accelerate growth with policies including benchmark interest rates near zero and bond-buying programs. Lagarde said that while ‘the deep freeze is behind,’ world growth remains ‘too low, too fragile and too uneven,’ with some 200 million people needing employment.”

Refillable electronic cigarettes face EU ban

“The European Union has struck a deal which could curb the booming market in electronic cigarettes and lead to an EU-wide ban on a popular version of the nicotine device.  In hard-fought negotiations between the 28 governments of the EU and the European parliament, both sides agreed on Tuesday that refillable e-cigarettes could be banned across Europe if three countries decided on prohibition.  The issue of e-cigarettes quickly became the most contentious aspect of new EU rules on the packaging and sales of tobacco products, although the electronic devices contain no tobacco.”
