The Daily Bell – Investment Trends 2014

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Welcome to 2014. Here are some dominant social themes I’ve selected to watch in 2014. In each case, I’ve selected a recent mainstream article to illustrate the trend in question: Gold to begin with, given the slump this metal has been in of late… We don’t have a time or a price point for gold going forward, but we do believe there are many signs of the yellow metal’s manipulation and sooner or later it will be time to buy once again. Biotech is sure to continue benefiting from what we have called the ‘Wall Street Party,’ a series of presumably arranged monetary and regulatory events that are boosting equity markets higher around the world and especially in the US – albeit not without volatility.”

Is War With China Inevitable?

“China has stopped future increases of dollar forex holdings, and has cut the use of the dollar in bilateral trade agreements with multiple countries.  Oil-producing nations are shifting alliances to China because it is now the world’s largest consumer of petroleum. And, China has clearly been preparing for this eventuality for years. So, given these circumstances, how can the U.S. government conceive of confrontation with the East? Challenging one’s creditors to a duel does not usually end well. At the very least, it would be economic suicide. But perhaps that is the point. Perhaps America is meant to make this seemingly idiotic leap.”

The Economist Hoists Its Battle Balloon?

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“When it comes to the current era, the tensions that The Economist warns us of are evidently and obviously manufactured in much the same way as the Great Wars of the 20th century. Whether one examines the CIA sponsored wars of ‘color revolutions’ in the Middle East and Africa or the calculated advance of tensions in Asia, the conclusion must be that, as before, hostilities are being manufactured. Nothing is inevitable about these quarrels. The exercise seems cynical.  It is difficult to come to any other conclusion but that top men of the West are contemplating the same sort of militaristic chaos in the 21st century that they planned and evidently carried out in the 20th.”

Tracking IMF Money Manipulation to Pakistan and Beyond

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The Nation magazine recently posted a small article entitled, ‘Pakistan gets second tranche of $553.5m from IMF.’ We are so used to these kinds of announcements that they hardly register anymore. But this is how the entrenched corruption of our day is carried out.  This is magic money, of course. It will bolster foreign reserves, help Pakistan battle the Taliban (that it actually sponsors), aid the state in supporting its economy (whatever that means), ‘solve’ an energy crisis (really!) and support increased tax collection efforts. A Swiss green company is in line to soak up a good deal of this IMF tranche.”

Wendy McElroy: I Pledge Allegiance to PHRMA

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The U.S. is attempting to give multinational corporations a status that has hitherto been reserved to sovereign nations. According to documents recently leaked from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations, the Obama administration wants corporations to be able to challenge the laws and regulations of foreign countries, and bring the dispute to a privately-run international court. The World Trade Organization currently grants the power to challenge a nation’s laws only to another nation.  The Trans-Pacific Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement of 2005 (P4) is a treaty between Singapore, New Zealand, Chile and Brunei with the goal of facilitating trade in the Asia-Pacific region.”

IMF’s World Tax Is a Puzzling Ploy

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“It seems clear for some reason that the IMF wants to advance the case for a global tax, though why it would want to adopt such a controversial proposal at this time is unclear. Perhaps the proposal is simply in line with other tax policies now being implemented. The most prominent one comes from the US government, which intends to tax expatriated residents via their banking connections.  The rollout of this policy is taking place this year but is also receiving a lot of pushback.  It could be that the IMF tax proposal is a way to implement further globalist tax strategies that can operate in conjunction with US efforts. There is no evidence that such a tax will solve the problems it is supposed to address.”

Debt hits 200-year high; IMF warns of ‘savings tax’ and mass write-offs

“Much of the Western world will require defaults, a savings tax and higher inflation to clear the way for recovery as debt levels reach a 200-year high, according to a new report by the International Monetary Fund.  The IMF working paper said debt burdens in developed nations have become extreme by any historical measure and will require a wave of haircuts, either negotiated 1930s-style write-offs or the standard mix of measures used by the IMF in its ‘toolkit’ for emerging market blow-ups.   Financial repression can take many forms, including capital controls, interest rate caps or the force-feeding of government debt to captive pension funds and insurance companies.”

Another Passport Program to Avoid

“‘Citizenship shouldn’t be bought and sold like a pair of shoes,’ a man once told me. ‘I think it’s scandalous that some countries are selling their citizens’ birthright.’ I disagree. We live in a world where governments have assigned themselves the authority to prevent people from traveling if they don’t have the right papers. One hundred years ago, you didn’t need a passport to travel the world. Today, hundreds of millions of people can’t leave their own country. Billions more have very limited travel options. Are you surprised that a market has developed for the documents needed to travel more freely? I’m not, and I’m proud to be part of a business that, in the end, gives people greater personal freedom.”

Obama’s Phony Free Trade Treaty That He Won’t Let Congress See

“The Obama Administration is seeking to restore ‘fast-track approval’ powers on this, which would allow an up-or-down vote on the whole TPP without discussion of its individual components.  As a final point in this introductory post, let me say this: The problem with these ‘free trade’ agreements is that some critics rely on centuries-old protectionist fallacies; they are afraid of ‘cheap imports.’ Anyone familiar with Bastiat understands why such worries are misplaced. However, those of us who believe in genuine free trade shouldn’t trust government officials when they title something a ‘free trade’ agreement. It doesn’t take years of backroom negotiations to reduce tariff rates.”
