Greek Dilemma: A Product of the Dialectic

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Greek protesters rally against IMF and EU inspection. Anti-austerity demonstrators jeer, heckle and throw coins at auditors from bailout troika amid fears of more public sector cuts … Only hours before, the Greek prime minister, Antonis Samaras, had resolutely declared that Greece was not at war with the international bodies keeping the debt-stricken country afloat. But in scenes not witnessed since the beginning of Greece’s economic crisis, auditors from the European Union and International Monetary Fund came face-to-face with the full force of anti-austerity anger as protesters in Athens jeered, heckled and stopped them from leaving the finance ministry.”

Swiss court convicts former IMF official over Czech mining scam

“De Groote, previously an administrator at the International Monetary Fund, was accused of providing a veneer of credibility, with the cash purportedly coming from investors.  ATS reported that he received almost one million Swiss francs for his role in the scam.  The five Czechs, including former board members, had managed to gain control of 97 percent of the company.  They went on to launder more than a billion Swiss francs.  The money was stashed in bank accounts in Switzerland and neighbouring Liechtenstein, in the name of more than 30 firms based in the Bahamas, the Isle of Man and other offshore havens.”

Global mercury ban would not affect vaccines with thimerosal

“The treaty says that certain mercury-added products, such as batteries, lamps, switches, skin-lightening cosmetics, pesticides and thermometers, may not be manufactured, imported or exported any later than 2020.  Mercury-added dental amalgams are also to be phased out.  However, certain mercury-added products are to be exempted from the ban, including those used for military and civil protection, products with no mercury-free alternative, products used in religious or traditional practices, and vaccines containing thimerosal, an ethylmercury preservative.”

Government claims small gold miners won’t be affected by mercury ban

“The phasing out and eventual banning of mercury, which is expected to take effect in 2022, will not have a severe impact on small miners and their operations.  This is according to Natural Resources and Environment Minister Robert Persaud. Prior to the signing, local small miners had been nervous about plans to ban the dangerous chemical, stating that there is no immediate and cheaper way to recover gold for its ore. However, he posited that the government did not see the ban having any impact on the mining sector, highlighting that it can only lead to positive benefits for the economy. This approach has been supported by the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners’ Association.”

International Tax Evasion Crackdown: Slow, Tricky, And Only First Step

“Banks first refused to easily yield up client information, in part because local privacy laws often prohibit that. So the U.S. is negotiating inter-governmental agreements with about 80 jurisdictions, whereby banks submit data to local tax authorities, who then share information with the IRS.   In any case, FATCA is only the first step in eliminating tax evasion, Staples told International Business Times after his presentation. The eventual goal is ‘a multilateral exchange of information framework,’ said Staples. He described that future model as more robust and less U.S.-centric.  That global tax data sharing system could take years to appear.”

Germany, France, Spain collaborate with Britain in mass surveillance

“Spy agencies in Germany, France, Spain and Sweden are carrying out mass surveillance of online and phone traffic in collaboration with Britain, according to documents leaked by Edward Snowden.  Britain’s GCHQ electronic eavesdropping centre — which has a close relationship with the United States’ National Security Agency (NSA) — has taken a leading role in helping the other countries work around laws intended to limit spying, the British newspaper said. The report is likely to prove embarrassing for governments including those of Germany and Spain, which had denounced earlier reports that the NSA was electronically spying on their citizens.”

Spanish spy chief to address Parliament on spying

“The head of Spain’s intelligence services will give a closed-door briefing to a parliamentary committee about allegations that Spain was a target for surveillance by the U.S. National Security Agency, the prime minister said Wednesday. He did not announce a date for the session.  Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy spoke a day after NSA director Gen. Keith Alexander told a U.S. House Intelligence panel that millions of telephone records of European citizens were swept up as part of a NATO program to protect the alliance. Alexander said, however, the U.S. didn’t collect the European records alone.”

IMF Happy Talk Cannot Obscure Japan’s Reality

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Printing a lot of money is really helping the Japanese economy, according to the International Monetary Fund. In fact, according to the IMF, there’s plenty of room to do more if need be. This is part of a larger trend we’ve been observing of late. Whether it is Janet Yellen in the US or Mark Carney in England or the ECB or the BOJ itself, aggressive money printing is becoming a signature calling card.  So what is all this money printing accomplishing? Well … from our point of view, it’s nothing more or less than a promotional exercise. It’s clear to us. We couldn’t figure it out at first but now we can. They’re printing because there’s nothing else to do.”

Interpol proposes new solution to shootings, terrorism: ‘Arm civilians’

“What is the Secretary General’s suggestion? Arm law-abiding citizens.  In an interview with ABC News, Secretary General Ronald Noble elaborated on that idea, noting that there are two paths governments can go down to protect ‘soft targets’ or unarmed civilians from terrorists and sociopaths. The first is to move in the direction of a police state with armed guards, security checkpoints, surveillance cameras and metal detectors everywhere. The other is to encourage responsible citizens to keep and bear arms for self-defense.”
