Supreme Court: Rights groups cannot prove harm from warrantless wiretapping

“The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that human rights groups do not have standing to sue the government over its warrantless wiretapping program because they have no proof that the wiretapping has harmed them. The vote was split 5-4 along partisan lines, with the conservative majority supporting the Obama administration’s argument that the FISA Amendments Act was above reproach in this case because the harms were ‘speculative,’ and not ‘actual.’  Roving, warrantless wiretaps were authorized by President George W. Bush after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, turning the National Security Agency into the nation’s spy machine.”

“Rhamaland-based billionaire Penny Pritzker, who was the first to back President Obama’s initial run for the presidency, has emerged as the leading candidate to become the next commerce secretary.  Pritzker, heir to the Hyatt Hotels fortune, is the 263rd richest person in the U.S., estimated net worth of US $1.7 billion.  Pritzker has contributed to the presidential campaigns and exploratory committees of George W. Bush, Joe Lieberman, Bill Bradley, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain (2000), Al Gore, John Kerry and Hillary Clinton.  Pritzker was chairman of a Chicago-area bank that collapsed because of the aggressive subprime home mortgages it made before the crash.”

“The United States did not collapse last Friday when the package of spending reductions known as ‘sequestration’ went into effect. The financial markets hardly blinked, as they have come to be more skeptical about these periodic government-hyped ‘crises.’  What had been portrayed as a drastic reduction in government spending was merely a decrease in the projected rate of increase in government spending over the next decade. Under sequestration, government spending increases by $2.4 trillion over the next 10 years rather than $2.5 trillion without it.  So we are speeding toward collapse at only 100 miles per hour instead of 110 miles per hour.”

UN investigator: Obama must release details of Bush kidnapping and torture program

“Ben Emmerson, the U.N. special rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights while countering terrorism, will release a new report on Tuesday detailing his findings about the Bush-era program, according to Reuters. The report was not published online ahead of a planned hearing set for Tuesday, and a spokesperson was unavailable for comment.  He added that there is ‘credible evidence’ that the CIA under the Bush administration had ‘black sites’ in Thailand, Poland, Morocco, Lithuania and Romania. Emmerson’s report is expected to urge lawmakers in those countries to fully investigate the matter and prosecute former officials if necessary.”

GOP Governors Continue Caving In to ObamaCare Mandates

“Republican governors once so ferocious in their fight against ObamaCare now seem content to roll over and play dead.  Perhaps their new agreeable attitude is inspired by the fact that President Obama was reelected in November while their own political futures remain in jeopardy. As the Associated Press reported last Sunday, ‘nearly two dozen GOP governors elected in 2009 and 2010 could face the voters again.’  There’s more than just electoral pragmatism at work, however. Governors know better than anyone that they rely on federal largesse for the bulk of their state budgets and would hardly be in their best (read: re-election) interest to bite the hand that feeds them.”
