The More Wasteful The Program, The More Essential It Is To Washington

“The Agriculture Department gave an Oklahoma winery $200,000 to purchase new equipment.  An Alaska Brewery collected $450,000 to add a new boiler.  Agriculture also gave $100,000 to a North Carolina vodka producer.  Congress devoted $350,000 to the Paterson Great Falls National Historic Park which the National Park Service said should not be a federal park.  Health and Human Services spent nearly $200,000 on a Hollywood party.  The Post Office paid futurist Faith Popcorn to imagine its future.  The Institute of Museum and Library Services gave a New York museum $150,000 to create an exhibit on play.  A Colorado museum received more than $40,000 for its toy collection.”

Private prisons contribute thousands to Oklahoma political campaigns

“Private prisons have given more than $400,000 to Oklahoma political candidates.  The role of private facilities under a new state prison reform law was among the concerns that led to the quashing of parts of the law, documents released by Gov. Mary Fallin’s office show.  Operators of private prisons in Oklahoma angled for a slice of the prison reform pie, campaigning to have their halfway houses serve as the ‘intermediate sanctions facilities’ spelled out in the new law to handle low-level offenders who violated terms of their release.”

Oklahoma Student Expelled for Casting a Spell

“An Oklahoma high school suspended a 15-year-old student after accusing her of casting a magic spell that caused a teacher to become sick.  The American Civil Liberties Union said it had filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on behalf of student Brandi Blackbear, charging that the assistant principal of Union Intermediate High School in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, suspended her for 15 days last December for supposedly casting a spell. The suit also charged the Tulsa-area Union Public Schools with repeatedly violating Blackbear’s civil rights by seizing notebooks she used to write horror stories and barring her from drawing or wearing signs of the pagan religion Wicca.”

E-cigarettes to be banned under Oklahoma governor’s executive order

“Fallin said she’s trying to protect state employees and visitors.  ‘E-cigarettes release vapor that contains chemicals that can impact employees and visitors to state property,’ she said. ‘Additionally, many electronic cigarettes look like traditional cigarettes and emit a vapor that looks like smoke. This creates confusion for employees and visitors, and presents enforcement challenges for state agencies.  ‘If you’re a state employee who smokes or uses e-cigarettes, I encourage you to make quitting your New Year’s resolution,’ she said. ‘We have resources at your disposal to help you quit.'”

Oklahoma lawmaker wants death row organ donations

“A state lawmaker says he wants to give Oklahoma’s death row inmates a chance at redemption by donating their organs before their execution.  Democratic state Rep. Rep. Joe Dorman of Rush Springs said Wednesday that he’s developing legislation that would give a person who’s been convicted of taking a life an opportunity to give someone else a chance to live a longer life.  Dorman says the program would be voluntary and no inmate would be forced to give up an organ. But Ryan Holmes, assistant director of health care ethics at Santa Clara University in California, says the idea raises ethical concerns and would be ‘very problematic’ for surgeons.”

Oklahoma town bans e-cigarettes on public property

“Inclusion of an ’emergency’ provision in the legislation had limited public notice of the true intent of the proposal.  Both Conley and Gore said the inclusion of e-cigarettes is a response to the grant-making process of the state Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust and Oklahoma Turning Point, both of which are encouraging communities to ban or limit tobacco-free products.  Across the nation, local anti-tobacco groups have been moving against non-tobacco products like e-cigarettes in response to the grant incentives. Late Wednesday, Ada’s public relations office had not responded to a request for comment on the new legislation.”

Vacant Private Prisons in Oklahoma May Re-Open

“CCA has posted job openings for various positions at the Watonga prison and a warden has been named, according to the CCA website.  The prison, whose capacity is about 2,100, closed in 2010 after the state of Arizona ended its contract with the company. Meanwhile, in Hinton, Mayor Shelly Newton said representatives from Geo Group, which operates the Great Plains facility, have been holding job fairs in preparation for a new contract. The Great Plains prison, which has a capacity of 2,000 inmates, closed in 2010 after Arizona also ended its contract for that facility. Newton said re-opening the prison would greatly benefit Hinton’s economy. The city has about 2,000 residents.”

Oklahoma inmates access Facebook with smuggled cellphones

“Dozens of Oklahoma inmates — some of them convicted murderers — have been active on Facebook from behind bars, even though it is against prison rules, an investigation by The Oklahoman found.  Reporters spent hundreds of hours on Facebook to find inmate users, primarily by their Facebook photos.  Many inmates put ‘selfies’ online, photos of themselves taken by holding a cellphone camera away from their bodies. One of the most prolific photo-takers is a convicted murderer, Clifford Putman, 26. He has more than 200 photos on Facebook dating to June 2012.”

Judge orders trial in allegedly missing Oklahoma City bombing video case

“A Salt Lake attorney who contends the FBI is hiding surveillance video associated with the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing might see his case go trial.  At issue is whether the FBI adequately responded to Trentadue’s Freedom of Information Act request for footage of Timothy McVeigh parking a truckload of explosives at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on April 19, 1995.  Trenatdue claims the video will reveal a second bombing suspect who resembles but is not his brother.  [The judge] has chastised U.S. Department of Justice several times for not producing the tapes since Trentadue sued in 2008.”

“An Oklahoma police chief has been arrested for allegedly holding a gun to his wife’s head during an argument.  Beggs Police Chief Wesley Fish was released from the Cherokee County Jail on bond Tuesday. Undersheriff Jason Chennault says the 48-year-old Fish was arrested Saturday near Lake Cookson after deputies received a call that a man was holding a woman by the throat with a gun to her head.
