Oklahoma legislator wants to legalize raw milk delivery to homes

“A Tulsa legislator wants to loosen state regulations of raw milk dairies to allow them to deliver directly to consumers. ‘Basically, my hope is that we can make milkmen legal again,’ said Rep. Ken Walker, R-Tulsa. ‘Since these customers already go to the farm, my sole purpose is to let the farmer deliver to the home.’  Committee Chairman Dale DeWitt, R-Braman, said he is uncomfortable with some of the health risks that broadening the availability of raw milk would carry.  ‘The risk is very, very low, but if there was any kind of outbreak of anything from the distribution of raw milk, … it would just literally kill the industry,’ he said.”

Oklahoma prosecutors return $21,227 more to Interstate 40 travelers

“District Attorney Jason Hicks agreed Thursday to return the funds in the three cases, dropping efforts to have the money forfeited to law enforcement use. Hicks is under fire for hiring a private company, Desert Snow LLC, to assist in his drug interdiction effort.  After hiring the Guthrie company in January, his task force seized more than $1 million in the stops, mostly along a 21-mile stretch of I-40 in Caddo County. Hicks agreed to pay the company 25 percent of all forfeited proceeds from stops involving its trainers.  Hicks said he does not plan to return nearly $850,000 seized in one stop in May. No one was arrested in that stop.”

In Profit-Sharing Scheme, Oklahoma DA Used Contractor for Highway Drug Stops

“An asset forfeiture scheme that utilized a private security contractor to stop vehicles on Interstate 40 in Caddo County, Oklahoma, has been shut down after garnering strong criticism.  Beyond paying the private operators to train police, the contract DA Hicks agreed to in January gave Desert Snow 25% of all assets seized during training days and 10% of all assets seized even on days the contractors were not present. Hicks told The Oklahoman he hired the contractors ‘because his drug task force had little success on drug stops’ and because ‘he hoped to make money for his office from the drug stops because of a loss of federal funds.'”

‘Synthetic pot’ cases hard to prosecute, but family businesses lose everything anyway

“In March, police raided Dennis and Christie England’s shop on the fringes of historic downtown Norman and effectively shut the business down, accusing the pair of selling dangerous synthetic marijuana to the public. Police seemed confident even though XLR-11 — the chemical compound present in the hundreds of grams of synthetic marijuana seized at the Englands’ shop in March — wasn’t even on Oklahoma’s ban substance list. Yet after a June 24 preliminary hearing before a judge in Cleveland County District Court, the case against the couple — who has since lost everything — was dismissed.”

A Rare – and Encouraging – Glimpse at How a Free Market Could Work in the Health Sector

“I’ve already cited the case of a North Carolina doctor who decided to use market-based pricing, and I’ve shared a very powerful video from Reason TV about  a hospital in Oklahoma that’s doing the same thing. Now we have a free market revolution by a doctor in Maine:  Dr. Michael Ciampi took a step this spring that many of his fellow physicians would describe as radical. The family physician stopped accepting all forms of health insurance. In early 2013, Ciampi sent a letter to his patients informing them that he would no longer accept any kind of health coverage, both private and government-sponsored. He posted his prices on the practice’s website.”

Rally at Oklahoma Capitol opposes U.S. intervention in Syria

“An estimated 200 Oklahomans put aside their political and philosophical differences Friday night to join together to oppose U.S. intervention in the Syrian civil war.For an hour Democrats, Republicans and Libertarians, conservatives and liberals, hawks and doves didn’t seem to mind the nearly triple-digit temperatures during the anti-war rally on the south steps of the state Capitol. Those attending the rally are concerned the United States may support the armed opposition to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who has regained the upper hand more than two years into an insurgency.”

EPA sues Oklahoma utility for failing to estimate emissions that did not occur

wuwt_header91

“The EPA claims that OG&E failed to estimate emissions that did not occur. They are suing OG&E in an effort to force the company ‘to assess whether its projects were likely to result in a significant [GHG] emissions increase.’ The EPA had no authority to regulate GHG emissions when the work was done (2003 & 2006). The work (on boilers and turbine blade replacements) caused no emissions increase.”

OKC hospital posting surgery prices online, creating bidding war

“An Oklahoma City surgery center is offering a new kind of price transparency, posting guaranteed all-inclusive surgery prices online. The move is revolutionizing medical billing in Oklahoma and around the world. Dr. Keith Smith and Dr. Steven Lantier launched Surgery Center of Oklahoma 15 years ago, founded on the simple principle of price honesty. ‘What we’ve discovered is health care really doesn’t cost that much,’ Dr. Smith said. ‘What people are being charged for is another matter altogether.’ Surgery Center of Oklahoma started posting their prices online about four years ago. The prices are all-inclusive quotes and they are guaranteed.”

Mentally Ill Prisoner Left To Die On Prison Floor In Oklahoma

“Prison workers refused to treat Williams, saying he was faking paralysis. He remained immobile as workers picked up his body and placed him in a shower cell. He was left there by workers for two hours. Throughout the next three days, Williams remained immobile on his cell floor. He could not reach food or water placed in his cell by prison officials, who still believed he was faking his paralysis. Vomit, saliva, and feces surrounded Williams after days on his cell floor. Prison medical staff checked on Williams and found him almost entirely unresponsive. They returned three hours later to give him CPR. Williams’ was pronounced dead shortly after.”

Oklahoma tornado victims denied permits to rebuild their homes

“Rhonda Northcutt said she is unable to get a building permit from the city because of where her home was located before it was destroyed.  Northcutt and her neighbor Jennifer Wisooker live in a neighborhood near May and SW 149th street. Their homes were destroyed by the May 20th tornado.  According to the city, there are homes in the neighborhood that are located in an area designated as a flood way. The city said it is unable to give permits to build new homes in these types of areas because of FEMA requirements. Even though their homes were there before the storm, Wisooker and Northcutt might not be able to re-build.”
