Beefing up profits: farmer achieves 20% bitcoin sales

“When it comes to businesses accepting bitcoin, there is nothing hi-tech about a farmer and his wife selling beef in rural Australia. However, David and Peta Moloney are doing for the beef industry what bitcoin is doing to the financial one: disrupting it.  So how has a beef-seller in northern New South Wales achieved up to 20% of his business in bitcoin? There is no denying that Honestbeef has found its niche in the market, providing ethical, additive-free beef to primarily metropolitan consumers.  The business started after the Australian drought of 2003 when the couple were living in Canberra, fed up with paying sky-high prices for poor-quality beef.”

Industrial hemp legalized in California

“Farmers in California may finally begin growing industrial hemp under a new law signed Wednesday by Gov. Jerry Brown.  Lawmakers have been discussing the proposal since 1999 to allow approved residents to grow hemp for industrial purposes by reclassifying the plant as a fiber or oilseed crop.  The law defines the crop as the nonpsychoactive types of the Cannabis sativa plant containing no more than 3/10 of 1 percent of THC, the psychoactive chemical in marijuana.  Supporters of the bill say hemp is a $500 million industry in California and is growing by 10 percent annually.”

Kevin Trudeau jailed for not paying $38 million to feds over natural remedies

“The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has been after 50-year-old Trudeau, originally from Massachusetts, for several years after he made millions flogging what he claims are natural cures for serious and potentially fatal illnesses.  The ruling at the end of last month was the latest round in more than a decade of legal battles that began with a suit filed by the Federal Trade Commission.  Trudeau was slapped with a $38 million fine in 2011 after allegedly scamming customers for decades. FTC put the value at $37.6million as to how much consumers were defrauded by ‘deceptive infomercials’ that Trudeau filmed in order to plug his book – The Weight Loss Cure ‘They’ Don’t Want You to Know About.”

Did You Know That Viruses Are Saving Your Life Right Now?

“Phages are an excellent way to combat antibacterial resistance because they adapt to morphing bacteria, whereas antibiotics don’t. Phage therapy has been used successfully to treat acne, and even MRSA. If phages can be controlled, they may become the ultimate antibacterial weapons against the latest deadly superbugs, such as CRE.The Journal of Infection reported impressive success rates with phage therapy in humans, in the range of 80 to 95 percent. The good news is, you already have this wonderful army living in your body, right where nature put it—it’s built-in!”

Federal marijuana decision clears way for Oregon hemp production

“Oregon is one of seven states with laws that permit the production of industrial hemp, a non-intoxicating relative of marijuana grown for its sturdy fiber and seeds.  Elsewhere in the country, hemp advocates have reacted to the federal government’s new position on cannabis by moving ahead with legal hemp production.  Kentucky’s top agriculture official said the Cole memo is all he needs to move forward.  India is the largest market for Canadian hemp by weight, though the United States buys more hemp seed than any other country, generally for food and beauty products. China, also a major international exporter of hemp, tends to produce hemp that’s used for textiles.”

Israel to Stop Water Fluoridation in 2014 Due to Health Concerns

“Since 1974, fluoridated water supplies was mandatory in Israel. It seems the nation, like the U.S., thought (or pretended to think) that fluoride offered enough benefit to risk the populations health. However, Izun Hozer Association for Dissemination of Health Education and Yaacov Gurman petitioned Israel’s highest court on November 12, 2012, demanding that water fluoridation come to a halt due to not only potential health concerns, but also because fluoride provides virtually no benefit. In April 2013, the Minister of Health, Yael German, created a new regulation removing mandatory water fluoridation. The ruling puts an end to all water fluoridation — mandatory or voluntary.”

Eating whole fruit lowers diabetes risk, but drinking fruit juice raises it

“People who ate at least two servings each week of certain whole fruits, especially blueberries, grapes and apples, reduced their risk of type 2 diabetes by as much as 23 percent compared to those who ate less than one serving per month.  On the other hand, those who consumed one or more servings of fruit juice each day saw their risk of the disease increase by as much as 21 percent.  ‘Fluids pass through the stomach to the intestine more rapidly than solids even if nutritional content is similar,’ says the paper.  ‘For example, fruit juices lead to more rapid and larger changes in serum [blood] levels of glucose and insulin than whole fruits.'”

Gin and tonic: the British Empire’s secret weapon

“Today, ’empire’ is a dirty word. But the gin and tonic lives on. The drink went from a bitter medicinal tipple in tropical outposts to a mainstay of British clubs and bars by World War I. In postwar America, the gin and tonic became synonymous with WASP summer retreats and country club lounges. Then, in the ’70s and ’80s, gin was almost forgotten as first classic cocktails went out of fashion and then vodka began to explode in popularity. Now the gin and tonic is back, especially at the very high end, where artisanal gins from Brooklyn, San Francisco, and all parts in between can be mixed with special tonics like Fever-Tree (get it?) or Fentimans.”

Family Farmers Fight Michigan Township For Their Animals

Family Farmers Fight Michigan Township For Their Animals

“Kelly Vander Kley Hunter and her family have spent the last three years pouring their time and money into building a small hobby farm in Mattawan, MI. Roughly a three hour drive from Detroit, Mattawan is a rural community that is home to many small farms with many farm animals. Yet Vander Kley Hunter had still checked before purchasing the property to make sure that having animals would be all right, and the township confirmed that farm animals were indeed allowed. But earlier this summer, the Hunters received a letter stating that their farm was no longer in compliance with the township zoning ordinance and that they had 90 days to get rid of more than half of their animals.”

Radio wave-treated water could change agriculture as we know it

“A groundbreaking new Irish technology which could be the greatest breakthrough in agriculture since the plough is set to change the face of modern farming forever. The technology – radio wave energised water – massively increases the output of vegetables and fruits by up to 30 per cent. Not only are the plants much bigger but they are largely disease-resistant, meaning huge savings in expensive fertilisers and harmful pesticides. Extensively tested in Ireland and several other countries, the inexpensive water treatment technology is now being rolled out across the world. The technology makes GM obsolete and converts excess CO2 into edible plant mass.”
