The Future of the Web Looks a Lot Like Bitcoin

“More and more, it seems, the priorities of these institutions do not align with those of the people they serve. Remember when Facebook toggled the digital levers in its social network to run massive psychology experiments on its users?  When confronted with an intractable problem, we’ve settled for the least egregious option by placing responsibility for our digital data in as few hands as possible. Because, really, the only thing sillier than trusting some central authority with our most precious digital records would be trusting a bunch of strangers with them.  And yet, this is precisely what Bitcoin achieves: a public database that everyone can see, anyone can add to, and no one can destroy.”

Amid the Greek Crisis, Bitcoin Reminds Everyone It’s Not Perfect

“The economic crisis in Greece has turned some attention to Bitcoin again. The price of the digital currency has rallied over the past few days, partly because some Greeks have been snapping up the currency amid bank closures and cash withdrawal limits.  But over the weekend, Bitcoin’s software provided a well-timed reminder of why it’s not the perfect financial system, either. Bitcoin transactions have been taking five times longer than usual to complete, according to Gil Luria, an analyst at Wedbush Securities. The problems stem from a new version of the Bitcoin software that runs on PCs and servers underpinning the currency’s decentralized system.”

Jeffrey Tucker: Wall Street Discovers the Blockchain

“What happens on the Blockchain is forever recorded on the Blockchain. Even now, you can observe every trade since its inception in January 2009.  What is this technology good for? It’s not just about money. It permits the packaging, titling, and commodification of any bundle of information data. This bundle can be ported from place to place and virtually zero cost. This happens without using a third party. Transactions take place person to person, exchanged just like goods and services.  In other words, the Blockchain allows information to behave exactly like physical property, but with one difference: you don’t have to be physically present to exchange it.”

Dutch police launch criminal investigation into Uber

“Dutch prosecutors are launching a criminal investigation into Uber for providing an illegal taxi service following court rulings and €10,000 fines.  Uber continued to operate its UberPop peer-to-peer ride-sharing service in the Netherlands in violation of a Dutch court order which saw fines of €10,000 for every driver caught providing the UberPop service.  It is the latest setback for the taxi service, which has been banned in several European countries in recent months, and recently had its offices in Paris raided by French police.  Uber allows users to summon taxi services with smartphones while its UberPop arm links private drivers to passengers.”

David Cameron’s plans to ban online encryption dubbed ‘infeasible’

David Cameron‘s proposals to end online encryption have been dismissed as ‘infeasible’ by the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology.  In a report titled ‘The Darknet and Online Anonymity’, the office argues that outlawing anonymity networks such as Tor may create more problems that it would solve.  The new dossier states that the network plays only a ‘minor role’ in the distribution and viewing of indecent images of children.  The importance of Tor for whistleblower organisations was also highlighted by the parliamentary office.  The report also downplays the threat posed by online drug markets like Silk Road, claiming that they shorten the supply chain from producers to consumers.”

Anonymous hacking attack lands British rock guitarist in jail

“Geoffrey ‘Jake’ Commander, a rock guitarist who has played with the Electric Light Orchestra, George Harrison and Elton John, among others, walked unnoticed through the halls of the U.S. District Court in Alexandria early Friday afternoon.  He was one of 13 people charged last year as members of the underground group Anonymous in attacks against financial institutions and other companies. Initially, he faced up to 10 years in federal prison.  Records hardly depict Commander as a cybercrime mastermind as much as an online surfer who stumbled his way into an unfamiliar chat room. Once there, he clicked on a link that would lead him right into the crosshairs of the Justice Department.”

‘Each time police shut Pirate Bay, we’ll multiply other servers’

“No matter how many times law enforcement cracks down on The Pirate Bay, it will find a way to re-open, the Berlin chairman of the Pirate Party told RT – days after the website was taken offline by a Swedish police raid.   ‘It was already shut down in 2005, and the result was the creation of a party called Pirate Party coming with all the ideas of sharing of information, of knowledge and culture on the internet. And freedom on the internet,’ Kramm said.  Kramm also said that music industry has opened for streaming, adapting to the new circumstances – and the streaming has become one of the strongest developing markets.”

Feds Begin Their Crackdown on Bitcoin Stocks

“If 2013 was the year that Federal agencies locked horns with bitcoin, the currency, 2014 is the year that they’re learning about bitcoin the fundraising mechanism. The current, technically interesting, bitcoin fundraising bubble, began when Mastercoin built a way of extending bitcoin’s blockchain so it can do a whole range of new things such as issuing brand new currencies and registering bets or contracts. Mastercoin, Ethereum and MaidSafe are essentially software startups that are pre-funded by selling their new digital currencies in advance.  The question is whether federal regulators will see this as an equity offering or instead something like the pre-sale of a video game.”
