2013 was a year for American rule breakers

“Some people change their societies by being elected to high office or rising to lead powerful institutions. But others use more direct methods: They do what they think is right, without worrying too much about the rules, and hope that their example will change public attitudes and, eventually, the rules that govern society.  2013 was a big year for this kind of insubordinate idealist. While few took the kind of immense personal risks that Snowden did, people willing to defy authority, social convention, and the law have changed how we think about everything from the nature of love to the future of our financial system.”

Melbourne residents turn unused car parks into cash

“The growing deficit and high cost of parking in much of Melbourne is behind the emergence of a new online marketplace where residents lease unused private spaces to motorists who need a spot to park.  Home owners and renters have begun leasing spare space in their garages and driveways, in apartment building car parks and even on the street, to people who drive each day to areas that lack adequate parking.  Space in an underground car park in a CBD apartment building was leased this month in a transaction using bitcoin, the digital currency. North Fitzroy woman Amy Martin leased an Exhibition Street parking space for three months for 1.25 bitcoins, or $900.”

Behind ‘Deep Web’: Alex Winter’s excellent Bitcoin adventure

“First known to the world as Bill S. Preston, Esq. in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Alex Winter quietly matured into a documentary filmmaker obsessed with how quasi-legal Internet activity can bring people together. His first documentary, Downloaded, chronicled Napster’s rise as a worldwide music-sharing site and fall in a swarm of lawsuits.  His followup film, titled Deep Web: The Untold Story of Bitcoin and The Silk Road, looks at the mysterious rise of Bitcoin, its future, and its role in online black markets.  We talked to him about his vision for the film and his inspiration to dive into the murky waters of the Deep Web, which Winter describes as a ‘new Internet.'”

BitTorrent serverless chat replaces usernames with crypto keys

“BitTorrent, Inc. is developing a serverless instant messaging system that relies on public key encryption to protect the privacy of communications, identifying users not with traditional usernames but with cryptographic key pairs.  The company, which develops the BitTorrent peer-to-peer protocol as well as the BitTorrent and μTorrent file sharing software, announced the forthcoming chat software in September and revealed some details on how it will work in a blog post today.  Underlying this system is a Distributed Hash Table (DHT) which finds IP addresses, removing the need for a central server to route messages, the company explained.”

Love Child of Bitcoin and GitHub Pays Cash for Code

“Many open source software projects run on donations. After all, open source is about giving code away for free, and without any revenue, you need some way of covering costs and motivating coders.  BitHub solves that problem by accepting bitcoin donations and collecting them into a common pool. It then monitors a project on the code hosting and collaboration site GitHub, and anytime someone submits code to the project — a process known as a ‘pull request’ — BitHub awards that person a portion of the pool. Open Whispersystems is already using the tool, and the first payment — about $19.12 worth of bitcoins — went out yesterday.”

Bitcoin: Open source money whose time has come

“The Internet is creating a society where each of us can play the roles previously reserved for corporations and moguls, if we choose — all without needing an intermediary. We can start businesses, trade goods, conduct relationships, publish, editorialize, and conduct politics, all without needing an intermediary to empower us — a phenomenon I call ‘the meshed society.’ A currency we can use as we engage in those activities is a natural complement and vehicle. As the meshed society matures, our need for digital money is inevitable.”

BitTorrent Client Devs Work on Bitcoin Integration

“The people behind FrostWire are working hard to implement Bitcoin support in their BitTorrent client. In addition to letting users donate to content creators and tracker owners from within the client, they are also integrating a Bitcoin wallet into the BitTorrent client. The FrostWire team hopes other clients will pick up the idea and have pitched a new standard to extend the BitTorrent protocol with Bitcoin meta-data.”

How the Bitcoin protocol actually works

“Many thousands of articles have been written purporting to explain Bitcoin, the online, peer-to-peer currency. Most of those articles give a hand-wavy account of the underlying cryptographic protocol, omitting many details. Even those articles which delve deeper often gloss over crucial points. My aim in this post is to explain the major ideas behind the Bitcoin protocol in a clear, easily comprehensible way. We’ll start from first principles, build up to a broad theoretical understanding of how the protocol works, and then dig down into the nitty-gritty, examining the raw data in a Bitcoin transaction.”
