Stop-and-Seize Turns Police Into Self-Funding Gangs

“With government unable to pay police as much as they need or would like, police are confiscating their revenue directly from the populace.  The threat to individual liberty from stop-and-seize is painfully clear.  Without requirements for an arrest or for a warrant, the power to confiscate cash is a clear diminution of property rights. Effectively, the police have been given official sanction to commit literal highway robbery without the threat of punishment. People whose property was seized must pay a lot of money and spend a long time in court for even the chance of getting it back, and police who seize money with no good reason don’t, apparently, suffer any threat of discipline.”

Hacking ring made $100M trading by stealing corporate press releases

“An international web of hackers and traders made $100 million on Wall Street by stealing a look at corporate press releases before they went out and then trading on that information ahead of the pack, federal authorities charged Tuesday.  Authorities said it was the biggest scheme of its kind ever prosecuted, and one that demonstrated another alarming vulnerability in the financial system in this age of increasingly sophisticated cybercrime.  In a 21st-century twist on insider trading, the hackers broke into the computers of some of the biggest business newswire services, which put out earnings announcements and other press releases for a multitude of corporations.”

Cliven Bundy will be held accountable, Interior secretary says

“Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy will be held accountable for the federal land grazing fees and penalties he owes, a top federal official said.  Bundy became a national figure in April 2014 when he and scores of supporters got into an armed standoff with federal law enforcement officers over his cattle’s years of alleged unpaid grazing on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, whose department includes the BLM, says Bundy will eventually have to answer for what he owes the federal government, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.  The BLM says he owes more than $1 million. But Bundy does not recognize the federal government’s authority to collect.”

The Government Tells Ross Ulbricht He Owes It $183,961,921

“In a memo on Thursday, government prosecutors imposed a money judgement against the Ulbricht equal to $183,961,921. They came to that number based on the transactional records from Silk Road showing the amount of illegal drug sales as $182,960,285 combined with the transactions for fake identification equal to $1,001,636.  The government contends Ulbricht is liable for all transactions on Silk Road because of the structure of the site. Ulbricht will be required to pay the full amount of money, which is likely not dischargeable in bankruptcy.”

India gold smuggling at all-time high, despite Nepali kingpin’s death

“In two years–since government increased duty on gold to 10% to rein in a yawning current account deficit—gold smuggling has grown by 900%.  That as an accepted principle seizures could be less than 10% of actual smuggling, the figures look even more ominous.  Sources say gold has also begun to be smuggled in ever unique ways and from rather unexpected corners. There is a silver lining to the grim story though. There is an unexpected drop in Nepal which had seen a massive spurt in gold smuggling in the past couple of years. The reason: the kingpin of illicit yellow metal trade in the Himlayan nation died under the rubble of his house in Kathmandu during the recent quake.”

IRS sets up dedicated cybercrime unit to combat identity theft

“The US Internet Revenue Service has launched a new unit dedicated to tackling the rising rate of identity theft through hacking.  The US agency’s unit comprises of roughly a dozen agents, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. The agents, based in Washington, will focus on cybercrime related to tax fraud, including the theft of data which is then used to collect victim tax refunds without their consent.  IRS data suggests that within the last fiscal year, over 1,000 cases of identity theft involved the loss of data through digital means.”

FBI offers $25,000 reward in $4.9 million fake-police gold heist

“The $25,000 reward was announced today in Miami where the gold shipment originated.  The tractor trailer with gold, silver and other valuables stopped on Interstate 95 back on March 1st after one of the guards for Transvalue, Inc. became sick.  The guard was approached by at least two armed men who announced themselves as ‘Policia’. The men gave instructions in Spanish, using zip-ties to tie up the guards. They were led into the woods.  The gunman broke into the trailer, making off with approximately $4.9 million in gold bars. Authorities say they left behind another $5 million in silver.”

Federal officials stole $1M in bitcoins from Silk Road while investigating it

“The Secret Service agent, Shaun Bridges, allegedly stole $800,000 worth of virtual currency, according to the complaint, and kept his stash in the exchange known as Mt. Gox. The DEA official, Carl Force, was ‘the lead undercover agent in communication’ with Roberts — a role that gave him the power to extort. Using a series of private, fictitious accounts, Force allegedly told Roberts he would bury evidence related to the case if Roberts paid him $250,000. In another instance, Roberts allegedly paid Force $100,000 in bitcoins after Force, using one of his anonymous accounts, offered up information related to the federal investigation.”
