Forgotten founder: YouSendIt’s Khalid Shaikh

“On a chilly Tuesday morning in December, Shaikh ran a piece of testing software, called ApacheBench, that flooded YouSendIt’s servers with traffic. The servers keeled over immediately. Shaikh never imagined that authorities would be interested in his activities. To him, they amounted to nothing more than a prank, a way to blow off steam. He was unaware that federal agents were subpoenaing his Internet records—and quietly reaching out to his friends and associates. On October 28, 2009, Shaikh was indicted on four counts of computer fraud for attacking YouSendIt’s servers. He was released on a $100,000 unsecured bond.”

It is in Texas– a state afflicted with a government that displays a gift for criminalizing practically everything.  Seven participants in a Texasfishing tournament, including a guide, have been accused of lying about the size of their catch. Under a measure enacted a few years ago, each of them faces the prospect of ten years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.”

Soldiers suspected of plotting to kill Obama face death penalty

“Prosecutors in Georgia announced on Thursday they would seek death sentences in one of the most startling and potentially serious cases of an anti-government militia to be brought before the courts in recent years. They alleged that the soldiers stockpiled almost $90,000 worth of guns and bomb-making equipment which they planned to use to kill the president and carry out a range of other violent acts.  Investigators have given no indication of how serious a threat the militia posed, beyond charging each of the three soldiers with 13 counts including murder and illegal gang activity.”

State Department condemns Zimbabwe raids on LGBT rights group

[The usual zero-credibility imperial posturing.]  “The United States on Thursday condemned Zimbabwe over raids on the offices of a gay rights group and urged authorities to end a ‘pattern of abuse’ against civil society.  ‘We are deeply concerned when security forces become an instrument of political violence used against citizens exercising their democratic rights. We call upon the government of Zimbabwe to end this pattern of abuse and to eradicate the culture of impunity that allows members of the security sector to continue to violate the rights of the Zimbabwean people,’ she said.”

Washington man arrested for online threat against Obama

“A Seattle-area man was arrested Tuesday after emailing a threat against President Barack Obama to an FBI account.  According to KOMO-TV, Secret Service agents went to the Federal Way home of 31-year-old Anton Caluori immediately after the emails were intercepted. The nature of the threat was not revealed.  Caluori was taken into custody and they confiscated two weapons on the premises.”

Officials with knowledge of the Iraqi banking industry say that banks, hawala houses, an unofficial global network of money-traders, and their Iranian customers are finding ways around them.”

The United States has told companies that ‘obviously they’ll make their own business decisions, but unless and until we have federal legislation in Iraq governing these things — something that we’ve been urging — that there are risks for them.’  The central government insists that all contracts are illegal if they did not go through the federal oil ministry.”
