Dallas mother sentenced to 99 years for gluing toddler’s hands to the wall

“A 23-year-old Dallas woman received a sentence of 99 years on Friday for charges related to beating her toddler and gluing the child’s hands to the wall. ‘Only a monster glues her daughter’s hands to the wall,’ Dallas County prosecutor Eren Price reportedly said during the hearing. The daughter, Jocelyn, is in the custody of grandmother, Ofelia Escalona, who is caring for her daughter’s four other children as well.”

Taliban mock U.S. as Afghan war enters 12th year

“‘With the help of Allah, the valiant Afghans under the Jihadi leadership of Islamic Emirate defeated the military might and numerous strategies of America and NATO alliance,’ the Taliban said in a statement Sunday. ‘And now after eleven years of unceasing terror, tyranny, crimes and savagery, they are fleeing Afghanistan with such humiliation and disgrace that they are struggling to provide an explanation’. A total of 3,199 NATO soldiers have been killed in the war, more than 2,000 of them Americans.”

“Dr. Shakir Hamoodi is an Iraqi-American nuclear engineer who just began a three-year prison sentence at the Fort Leavenworth, Kansas penitentiary for the ‘crime’ of sending sustenance money to his impoverished, sick, and suffering relatives in Iraq – including his blind mother – during the years when US sanctions (which is what caused his family’s suffering) barred the sending of any money to Iraq. The travesty of this case – and the havoc it has wreaked on the entire family – is repellent and genuinely infuriating. But it is sadly common in post-9/11 America, especially for American Muslim communities.”

“A US air force systems analyst who expressed support for WikiLeaks and accused leaker Bradley Manning triggered a formal military investigation last year to determine whether she herself had leaked any documents to the group. Air Force investigative documents, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, show that the analyst was repeatedly interviewed about her contacts with and support for WikiLeaks – what investigators repeatedly refer to as the ‘anti-US or anti-military group’ – as well as her support for the group’s founder, Julian Assange.”

Heat-seeking US election rhetoric finds Swiss “piracy”

“Anything goes in the US presidential elections, when it comes to lambasting and finding easy targets, but one of the oddest moves appeared Thursday, with the ‘Congressional International Anti-Piracy Caucus’ adding Italy and Switzerland to its black list. They join Russia, China and Ukraine on the list. Switzerland, according to the group of 46 members of Congress, acts as a ‘magnet’ for piracy. A key issue for the group appears to be strict Swiss data protection laws.”

Amish sect found guilty of hate crimes in beard cutting

“An Amish bishop and 15 followers were convicted of hate crime charges in Ohio Thursday for a series of beard-cutting attacks against those they deemed had strayed from the faith. The five separate raids were mainly carried out at night, with the victims forced out of bed, their beards and hair chopped off with horse mane shears and battery-powered clippers, and the roughshod barber work documented with embarrassing snapshots on a disposable camera.”

Italy upholds convictions of 23 CIA agents for imam kidnapping

[‘Extraordinary rendition’ only applies to some…] “Italy’s top court Wednesday confirmed guilty verdicts against 23 CIA agents for the 2003 abduction of an Egyptian imam in Milan and ordered a re-trial for five Italian ex-spies accused of taking part. The CIA agents were all being tried in absentia in one of the world’s biggest court cases against the US ‘extraordinary rendition’ programme to interrogate alleged Islamist militants after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Italy’s justice ministry is now obliged to make a formal request for the extradition of the agents, legal sources said, but the United States has already refused.”

Facebook yields to remove Hezbollah page under CIA pressure

“Facebook has removed Hezbollah-related pages in what can be seen as another attempt by Washington to muzzle criticism of US policies. A spokesman for the social networking website told Lebanon’s Daily Star that the company removed the official Facebook page for Hezbollah’s al-Manar television because it ‘incited violence’. Due to Hezbollah’s appearance on a list provided by the State Department that contains names of organizations that may be involved in the ‘promotion of violence’, they have been removed from the site, Wolen claimed.”
