Judge upholds Liberty Dollar founder’s conviction, schedules sentencing

“The federal judge in the Liberty Dollar counterfeiting case from North Carolina today upheld the jury’s March 2011 conviction of the alternative currency system’s founder, Bernard von NotHaus. (For an account of von NotHaus’ conviction, see: http://www.gata.org/node/9715.)  The judge scheduled von NotHaus to be sentenced in December.  Since the Liberty Dollar case seems to have involved a political challenge to federal currency law more than a serious counterfeiting scheme, and since the U.S. government already has seized all of Liberty Dollar’s assets, it may be hard to see the need to imprison von NotHaus.”

Supposed Ruin in Hong Kong Leaves Out the Larger Picture

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“What’s going on in China and Hong Kong is ironic because it seems to mimic much that has held the West back in modern times. In fact, much that China suffers from at its current level of development corresponds to a similar evolution in the West.  From what we can tell, the RMB/Yuan is growing in importance as a currency in Hong Kong. Additionally, Hong Kong’s stock market is now heavily dependent on Chinese-listed companies. In fact, this might explain some of the growing income disparities that the Bloomberg article complains about.  Bloomberg seeks to blame an authoritarian Chinese political influence for what is happening to Hong Kong. But the truth is more complex.”

Grandmother in violent SWAT raid for neighbor’s wireless internet use

“The ostensible reason for the raid was that someone had anonymously posted some internet tough-talk on an online discussion forum, and referred to the Evansville police.  The subsequent violence directed at the Milan household was to serve a search warrant to find out who was responsible.  The alleged ‘specific threats’ were posted in a discussion on the topix.com website. One of the posts declared: ‘Cops beware! I’m proud of my country but I hate police of any kind. I have explosives… Made in America. Evansville will feel my pain.’  In response, police packed their own guns and explosives and headed out to raid the owner of the IP address from which the posts had been made.”

Congress slams Fed’s permanent crisis lending proposal

“A bipartisan group of lawmakers on Monday urged the Federal Reserve to restrict its crisis lending programs for big banks.  Congress approved billions of dollars in 2008 to stabilize banks. In addition, the Fed launched its own programs, such as an overnight loan facility for primary dealers.  In all, the Fed provided more than $13 trillion to banks that relied on emergency lending programs for an average of 22 months, the letter said. ‘These loans were another bailout in all but name,’ the lawmakers said.  The group criticized rules the Fed proposed in December 2013 to implement the Dodd-Frank requirement that emergency programs provide liquidity to the entire financial system, not failing banks.”

Former Fed Chair: ‘We Are Running Out Of Buffer In The Economy’

“In an appearance on ‘In The Loop With Betty Liu,‘ Greenspan warned that the economy has almost no room to maneuver if faced with a security threat:  ‘We are running out of buffer in the economy. We don’t have the capability should, for example, we run into a major conflict in the Middle East or elsewhere where it requires a major increase in our defense budget. Our defense budget is heading in a direction where in a couple, two or three years it will be at the lowest level relative to GDP since before World War II. We don’t have the physical resources to respond.’  Greenspan believes a correction is likely given current valuations, but it’s impossible to say when it will hit.”

WaPo: Marijuana’s rising acceptance comes after many failures

“Since the 1960s, the United States has traveled on a herky-jerky trip from hippies and head shops to grass-roots backlash by suburban parents, from enthusiastic funding of the war on drugs to a gathering consensus that the war had little effect on marijuana use. Why is the current campaign for legalization resonating when previous ones did not?  Today’s leap toward legality is entwined with the financial desperation of cash-strapped states, an Internet-driven revolution in how Americans learn about marijuana and its medicinal uses, and a rising libertarian sensibility in which many liberals and conservatives alike have grown skeptical of government’s role in telling citizens how to medicate themselves.”

Russia to block US agricultural imports

“Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday hit back hard against countries that have imposed sanctions over the Ukraine crisis, ordering trade cuts that an official said would include a ban on all imports of agricultural products from the United States.  White House spokeswoman Laura Lucas Magnuson decried the move, saying ‘Retaliating against Western companies or countries will deepen Russia’s international isolation, causing further damage to its own economy.’  Russia last week banned the import of apples and some other fruits from Poland, saying this was because of sanitary concerns.”

Ron Paul: Why Won’t Obama Just Leave Ukraine Alone?

“On Friday, President Obama requested Congressional approval to send US troops into Ukraine to train and equip its national guard. This even though in March, the president promised no US boots on the ground in Ukraine. The deployment will be funded with $19 million from a fund designated to fight global terrorism, signaling that the US considers the secessionists in Ukraine to be ‘terrorists.’  But let’s not forget that this whole crisis started with the US-sponsored coup against Ukraine’s elected president back in February. The US escalates while it demands that Russia de-escalate. How about all sides de-escalate?”

U.S. “Humanitarian” Bombing of Iraq: A Redundant Presidential Ritual

“As all of this demonstrates, there certainly are some heinous, violent people in the world: often including America’s closest allies and the ones who unleash the violence documented here, as well as those at whom that violence is directed. But perhaps some perspective and serious skepticism is warranted the next time we’re relentlessly bombarded with messaging about The New Greatest Villainous Threat in History – and especially manipulative accusations that opposition to U.S. military attack is indicative of support for those New Villains – as a means to secure acquiescence to the next bombing campaign.”

BIS chief fears fresh Lehman from worldwide debt surge

“Jaime Caruana, head of the Swiss-based financial watchdog, said investors were ignoring the risk of monetary tightening in their voracious hunt for yield.  Mr Caruana said the international system is in many ways more fragile than it was in the build-up to the Lehman crisis. Debt ratios in the developed economies have risen by 20 percentage points to 275pc of GDP since then. Credit spreads have fallen to to wafer-thin levels. Companies are borrowing heavily to buy back their own shares. The BIS said 40pc of syndicated loans are to sub-investment grade borrowers, a higher ratio than in 2007, with ever fewer protection covenants for creditors.”
