The Police State and Property Taxes

“Once a video of the Dent incident became public, the officer lost his job. He’s now on trial, facing charges of mistreatment of a prisoner.  Dent also decided to sue the city of Inkster, Michigan, where the incident occurred. Surprisingly, he won. The city of Inkster settled for $1.4 million.  The problem is, Inkster doesn’t just have an extra $1.4 million laying around. So what did the local politicians do? They decided to raise property taxes.  A local media source estimates the new property tax will amount to about $179 on a home valued at about $55,400.  Now that doesn’t sound like a lot. But consider that the median income in Inkster is just $26,500 and that 40% of its people live below the poverty line.”

Texas, Oklahoma Outlaw Voter-Approved Local Fracking Bans

“Despite mounting scientific evidence that fracking is increasing seismic activity in the state, Oklahoma legislators are poised to pass legislation preventing municipalities from passing local bans on drilling operations.  Senate Bill 468 would overturn an 80-year-old statute and explicitly prohibits local regulation of certain oil and gas activities—even if such regulation is approved by Oklahoma voters.  Following the lead of Texas lawmakers, who on Monday passed a law forbidding towns or cities from enacting local restrictions on any gas or oil drilling operations, both the Oklahoma House and Senate passed SB 468 with strong majority support.”

Sheriffs attack senator’s proposal to change asset forfeiture law

“Law enforcement officials are lashing out at a state senator for a new legislative proposal that would restrict the way police agencies are allowed to seize cash and property.  Sen. Kyle Loveless (R-Oklahoma City) introduced a bill this week that would prevent law enforcement agencies from confiscating property unless that person is convicted of a crime. Part of the Personal Asset Protection Act, SB 838, would place legally seized assets into the state’s general fund. Currently, most of the seized property and cash are returned to local law enforcement agencies.”

Foreign Money Is Pouring Into U.S. Real Estate, and It’s Not Just Houses

“Blockbuster real estate deals are back and breaking records as cash from around the globe pours into U.S. office buildings, apartment complexes and other investment properties.  Demand for property from warehouses to skyscrapers is booming, helped by more than six years of Federal Reserve efforts to stimulate economic growth by keeping interest rates low, and stockpiles of cash from overseas investors seeking a haven.  Surging prices for the best buildings in big cities such as New York and San Francisco are driving the real estate recovery. Centrally located office towers are fetching prices 33 percent above records set in 2008.”

North Korea joins new era as property bubble grows

“It’s a capitalist’s fantasy: a fast-developing city filled with entrepreneurs and speculators, and a soaring property market. Restaurants are opening, shiny apartments are springing up, and the nouveaux riches are indulging themselves with cars, clothes and perfume.  This, however, is not one of the southeast Asian tigers, but North Korea, the most isolated and repressive totalitarian dictatorship in the world.  It is more than 15 years since the country’s communist rulers began to permit the small-scale buying and selling of food and household goods as an exception to its strict socialist economy. Now Pyongyang is experiencing a modest version of that familiar first-world phenomenon: a property bubble.”

Fannie, Freddie Officially Lower Mortgage Down Payment to 3 Percent

“Following months of talk and speculation, both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac announced on Monday they will begin allowing qualifying first-time borrowers to purchase homes with just a 3 percent down payment.  By lowering the down payment down to 3 percent, leaders from the GSEs and the Federal Housing Finance Administration (FHFA) hope to increase homeownership and particularly household formation by offering loans to those who can afford mortgages but lack resources to make a 20 percent down payment plus closing costs.”

Manhattan’s New Most Expensive Listing: A $130 Million Penthouse

“New York City has a new most expensive apartment for sale, and it’s not even built yet.  With an asking price of $130 million, the 12,394-square-foot triplex planned to top a luxury tower that is set to go up at 520 Park Avenue would be the most expensive apartment New York has ever seen, surpassing the $118.5 million asking price for three separate units currently being marketed together in Battery City’s Ritz-Carlton tower.  Set on 60th Street two blocks east of Central Park, 520 Park Avenue is designed to rival another, wildly successful Zeckendorf project: 15 Central Park West, now a billionaire enclave and one of New York’s most prestigious addresses.”

Why London’s Mayor Won’t Pay “Outrageous” US Tax Bill

“Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, just became the unlikely spokesperson for the 8 million or so US citizens living abroad.  Boris is an ‘accidental’ US citizen. Although his parents were British, he was born in the US. That makes him a US citizen even though his family left the US when he was only 5 years old, nearly 50 years ago. And recently, the IRS sent him a bill for capital gains tax on the sale of his personal residence in London.  Boris isn’t happy about it. Under UK law, this gain is exempt from any tax. But since the US, uniquely among major countries, taxes its non-resident citizens wherever they live, the gain isn’t exempt from US tax.”

Why Your Offshore Dream Home Might Be Illegal

“While real estate fraud exists everywhere, it’s especially pervasive in Spain, where in the 1990s and early 2000s, developers bought property that government officials illegally rezoned for residential development in exchange for hefty bribes.  No one seemed to care in those boom times, and developers sold homes to expats as fast as they could build them. But today, there are more than 1 million ‘illegal’ properties in Spain owned by around 800,000 expats. And Spanish authorities have vowed to demolish these illegal dwellings, especially those built in ‘green’ spaces reserved for beach access or parks. Under Spanish law, owners may be forced to pay for the cost of the demolition.”

A New Free-Thinking Community for Your Life, Safety and Sanity

Anthony-Wile1

“Anyone considering securing a secondary residence knows that finding an ideal place to live in a foreign country can be a daunting task. That’s one of the reasons for the popularity of expat ‘communities.’ Such communities often have drawbacks, though, in that they are extremely isolated, ideologically or geographically, or mismanaged and simply involve an unacceptable level of financial risk.  I’m especially excited to share with you this breaking news because the community High Alert is developing in Colombia has considered those drawbacks, and many others, and offers the right alternative. As they say in Colombia, ‘The only risk is not wanting to leave.'”
