Chinese Investors Snap Up Burgundy Vineyard As Thirst For French Wine Grows

“The chateau producing Napoleon’s favourite red wine, one of Burgundy’s most prized vineyards, has been sold to a Chinese gambling tycoon, sparking dire warnings from local growers of a ‘foreign invasion’ of mainly Asian investors.  It is the first Burgundy chateau to fall into the hands of the Chinese, who have already bought 20 Bordeaux chateaux and are fanning out to other regions as they seek to cater for rocketing domestic demand for French wine and art de vivre.”

Ikea to build entire district in German city

“Swedish furniture giant Ikea announced plans on Wednesday to build a brand-new district with shops, flats and office space for thousands of people in the northern German city of Hamburg.   The Hamburger Abendblatt said the project would run along similar lines to a planned development in eastern London for which Ikea is preparing to build around 1,200 flats, offices, hotels and shops.  The firm, which specialises in inexpensive furnishings that consumers assemble themselves, last week announced a one-billion-euro ($1.25 billion) move into the hotel sector, opening at least 100 hotels in Europe.”

France gives green light to holiday home tax hike

“Owning a charming holiday home in the heart of rural France may no longer be the life-long dream of Francophiles across the world, thanks to new substantial tax rises.  A massive tax rise affecting foreigners who own second homes in the country has been given its blessing by France’s highest authority, the Constitutional Council.  The legislation was approved on August 9, despite strong claims by many in the property market that it is against EU laws.  It comes even after President François Hollande appeared to reassure Britain’s legion of holiday home owners during a recent trip to the UK.”
